Bumped a car slightly while reversing!  |

 Hi everyone,
I live in the Uk. I recently bumped the front of a persons VW while reversing in a school parking lot. There was a tight space between our cars and I did not realise he was moving forward as I reversed:(. It was not a very big thud and did not damage any of our cars. The gentleman in the other car was obviously furious and I sincerely apologised. We both noticed that I had done no damage by the look of it. He insisted that there 'must' be some damage done. He took my phone number name and address.
20 days later I today received a call from him saying that I damaged his air-conditioning vent and that we need to contact the insurers. Anyone who can throw some light on this matter? The kind of costs involved in such matters? What do I do? Will my insurance premium go up if there is a claim. I have never done this before, which means I have no claims bonus.
Please any advice will be good.

1.  quiltedblessings (871) | 5 months ago |  I have no idea how these things work in the UK, but in the U.S, the insurance carriers would look at the situation and decide who is at fault. The insurance companies would take care of everything, and if you are the one "at fault" then yes your premium might go up a bit, though not much if it is your first "accident".

From what you said in your post the laws here seem very similar. I hear that when the matter goes to the insurers the costs get amplified. I think it is illegal not to report the matter to the insurance company. Wonder if it will be any cheaper if I could simply reimburse him for the repairs' cost.

Thanks a lot for your reply. It has been a long time since this happened. I informed my insureres about this incident. He never got anything out of them and I have never heard from him since.

I have had a few bumps and scrapes on my car too while driving. I had VW too, and the body is very strong. A minor thud would never damage the A/c vent. There are few things that you have to take into account into consideration.
1. You wrote that he was moving forward as you were backing up. Are you sure you were motion backing up? Maybe you just put the car into gear only and he moved forward?
2. Was the car a late model or an earlier model?
3. To have damaged his A/C you would have hit the front bumper pretty hard, and that would have deployed the air bags. Was his airbags deployed?
4. Were there any witnesses?
5. If he didn't call you the very next day, then i can be pretty sure he is trying to scam you.
Usually the insurance would cover the cost and it would increase the premium. If it were me, i would get in touch with the police.
