Sad movies that are really funny. And funny movies that are really sad.

Do you have a favorite funny movie that turns out sad? Or, sad movie that turns out to be ironically funny?

I love movies! I love watching them online and on DVD. I don't have much time to do either these days. But, in my movie watching hay-day I soaked up some favorites. Two movies that come to mind are Short time and Terms of Endearment.

Terms of Endearment is the classic funny movie that ends up sad. I loved half of it. Not many comedies dare to let a beloved character die of cancer at the end. It was a riot all the way through until I found out the woman's son-in-law was cheating on his wife and she was dying. Not so funny anymore. Jack Nicholson played the perfect weirdo neighbor. Beaches with Bette Midler was the same way.

Another sad movie that was funny was Short time. It was actually a comedy about a man that thought he was dying. It was sad in that he was dying. And, nothing he could do would stop it. He tried to get killed in the line of duty as a police man, so that his wife would collect a large life insurance policy. I won't tell you how it works out. In other words, noone goes home crying. But, the movie takes an apparently sad situation (dying) and really makes it funny.

Later Queen Latifa made a modern remake of the film.

It's funny. I haven't seen it in years, so maybe this weekend, I'll rent the movie from Netflix.
