Huge Roots, what a mess??  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. Mechanicone (559) 4 years ago

This weekend we were clearing trees from our property to build the house. Of course you have to dig them out not just cut them off because of the stumps. Did you ever realize how big these stumps were, like huge molars coming out of the earth. I have a tractor with a backhoe so it wasn't terribly bad but what a job. Would you have done it yourself or had someone do the job?

Sounds like a big pain in the bum. I wouldnt even begin to attempt something like this. But then again we are the kind of people who dont care too much about our lawn. If the grass is green its good enough for us.

Yes it was but hiring someone to excavate the land would be a huge expense. This is something to be permanent so i think i'll put the time into it.

I wouldn't want to do that, what a mess it must be! My Grandpa used to blast out the stumps but we weren't allowed to be on the premises while he did it. Later, he'd go through with his tractor and get the roots and let us ride along.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Mechanicone (559)  4 years ago

Yeah i thought about blasting but haven't come across any that i couldn't get out so far. Figured i my as well take care of it now why i can.

I'd do it myself if I had a tractor with a backhoe. Especially if it has all wheel drive.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Mechanicone (559)  4 years ago

It does and i figured it would be a lot cheaper than hiring someone, especially since i don't mind doing it.

myLot reputation of 42/100. redyellowblackdog (4040)  4 years ago

I just got my first tractor. No backhoe, but have front loader, bushhog, box blade, and rototiller, and all wheel drive. The only problem is that means less time on myLot. The wife says, "You bought it, use it!"

If we could do it ourselves, we would to save the expense.. Yes, roots are huge! Makes you wonder about how the pioneers cleared so much land!

myLot reputation of 99/100. Mechanicone (559)  4 years ago

I'll tell you what, its back breaking work but costly to hire someone to do it. Time consuming too but well worth it.

If you don't have a backhoe it REALLY is worth the money to either rent one or pay to have someone do it for you. Just the sheer size of the roots from some of the trees around here makes it a montamentual task to try to get rid of without some kind of equipment and some extra help!

I definitely would have done it myself if I had the equipment. These days, it costs a fortune to get someone to do jobs like that. I had someone come and cut some trees for me and I was shocked at the cost! They make a fortune! Of course, I don't know how often they work, so that may be why they charge so much.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Mechanicone (559)  4 years ago

Yes it is definately a messy job but much cheaper when doing it yourself.

We had a tree that had roots so big, it busted our water pipes! We did not realize it at first, and thought maybe one of the kids had thrown something into the toilet! We did not even think about doing the job ourselves! It is a big job that must be done correctly! Of course, with us, the landlord payed for it, but unless you know that you will not make any mistakes, I would not risk doing the job myself! Sometimes you end up paying more for a job that should have been done by a professional!

myLot reputation of 99/100. Mechanicone (559)  4 years ago

I understand, the trees i'm removing are no where near our home but will be near the new home, so to avoid those such problems like you had i'm taking care of it now.

myLot reputation of 90/100. olivemai (2765)   ranked 1,351 out of 32,950 in life  4 years ago

It does sound as if you know enough to do the job and get it done! Are you going to have anybody helping you?

Hi Mechanicone! Oh, I don't think I can do that or my hubby on our own. We will surely have someone to do the job. Just like the past days, we have hired someone to cut down the big branches on the huge tree infront of our house. It is so huge and tall that hubby can't do it on his own..besides he is scared of climbing up the tree! haha..
Take Care and God Bless! Happy Mylotting! happy

About 8 years ago we had three big oak trees removed from our yard. We have one stump left, naturally the biggest. They are huge. I never thought our backyard would be the same, but it is. It was worth the expensive. We did pay to have someone do it because they were growing around power lines.
