Which to you prefer? Tropical fruit or domestic (US) fruit?

When I was a kid, I used to LOVE going into the orchards behind our house and picking apples and peaches - it was great having instantaneous treats at hand. Then my dad's job sent him to South America and Mom and I moved there, too. Suddenly, I was exposed to entirely different fruits than I was used to - mangos, guavas (aka guayabas), guanabanas, finger bananas, papayas. I LOVED THEM!!! I still do. I actually now prefer tropical fruit to our domestic fruits (apples, peaches, pears, etc.) I regularly buy canned tropical fruit cocktail for Mom and me. She'll have some almost daily at breakfast, but we'll often put it out with our dinner, too. I can't explain it, but there's just something about it that I enjoy far more than the other fruits. Although, there's nothing wrong with apples or peaches or pears. I just don't enjoy them as much. How about you?

I love tropical fruits. I grew up having a lot of them in our yard. My grandfather loves planting fruit bearing trees. Since we are in a tropical country most of the fruits you mentioned were in our yard especially guanabanos or here we call it guyabanos.

That would be great to have! I used to skate around our neighborhood in Venezuela and pick mangos along the way to eat. I found there were two different kinds, one stringier than the other. I prefer the less stringy one. I also like red papaya better than yellow papaya, but I'll eat both. Thanks so much for telling me about your grandfather's trees.

I wonder if you're talking about indian mangoes, apple mangoes or carabao (i don't know what you call them in your place) mangoes. Carabao mangoes are the big ones and sour if unripe but you'll love them when they're ripe they're the ones you usually see in the market. Apple mangoes are much rounded in shape and less stingy sometimes taste like medicine a bit. Indian mangoes are superb! not too sour not sweet. Doesn't taste like medicine, taste like mango (lol!)

I have tried to purchase mainly homegrown, US grown fruits and veggies of late. I just feel better about it.

You could still get tropical fruits grown in the US if you consider some of our own territories are tropical. Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam, plus the state of Hawaii. I understand your purchasing focus, but I believe we also get some of that fruit from our own locales.
