You really eat that? And Like it? |
|
Two of my favorite things to do are eating and traveling.
I am a travel buff. I love to travel and have done it extensively, although not in a few years. I also love to eat, as many of you know from my posts about cake and candy, and the like.
The thing about my eating habits, though, are that I am a very picky eater, and I am not adventurous at all. So, traveling to certain places worries me when it comes to food. Of course I know wherever I go I'll be able to find something I like and can eat, but some stories and rumors that fly about certain countries, regions, and even states, make me worry about what I'll find.
I'm curious to know, where you live, what is the regional or local cuisine and do you like it? Is it something you would boast about and recommend?
I'm also wondering if there are food myths that you can dispell for me. Are there things that people think about the cuisine where you live that aren't true? Negative things that you can change my mind about? Can you convince me to eat haggis, I wonder???
So, tell me where you live and tell me what foods are most popular. If you live in a certain state in the US, province in CA, or another country; Scotland, Australia, the Philipines, Inida. Share your yummies (or not so yummies) with me.

dfn12968 (5538) | 1 year ago | I found a description of the smell on Wikipedia...yikes. LOL
"... its odor is best described as pig-sh1t, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.[18]"

|
|
yona06 (330) | 1 year ago | it has a really strong, musky, sweet and pungent smell. if you put it in a room long enough, the smell might stay there for days. it's so strong that in some countries like malaysia people are forbidden to eat and/or bring the fruit in public areas such as hotels and shopping malls.
| |
|
|
|
dfn12968 (5538) | 1 year ago | That's what wiki said, that it's not allowed in some public places. Wow. How do you get past the smell? I don't think I could.

fluffnflowers (1368) | 1 year ago | I actually love durian. I've never gotten it when people described the scent as something horrible and rotten. It smells a bit like overripe fruit but nothing repulive. I'm very sensitive to smells, so I'm wondering how much of the 'omg, durian stench!' is just because people hear it stinks and feel like they didn't get the 'real experience' if it didn't make them want to die in their boots.:P
| |
|
|
yona06 (330) | 1 year ago | hi fluffnflowers, you're a florist. I think it suits you with you being sensitive to smell.
why people can't stand durian? I think it's a power of suggestion. people already have their mind set to think that durians are revolting and when they try it their minds won't give them the chance to process the actual taste. but I also think it's often because they didn't get a good sweet ripe one for their first tasting. a good durian is really good, but a bad one is really bad.
oh, and did you know that durian in indonesian language means "thorny"?

dfn12968 (5538) | 1 year ago | From what I have heard, I don't think I'll be trying it. I hear they have fried Mars bars, though, so I'll definitley be trying those. LOL

3. mummymo (11643) | 1 year ago | Well honey you know I am from Scotland and I can tell you I most definitely would never try and force you to eat haggis - wouldn't touch it myself! lol We have all different kinds of foods! For example there is the Scotch Pie synonymous with going to Football matches, it is a thin hard pastry shell filled with mince (ground beef) and usually washed down (well at least at the football) with Bovril - a pretty disgusting meaty flavoured hot drink! There are lots of good stuff too like stews and soups and tatties then there are things like Scottish Fudge and Tablet, oh and honey laced with whiskey and and and - och just wait til you get here and we will investigate together! lol xxx

The meat pie sounds kind of good but not the drink.
And, aren't shortbread cookies scottish? They are my favorite!

4. Goodie123 (7549) | 1 year ago | Good Morning Sunshine, sorry had heaps to do and only just logged in now. Still heaps to do.
In australia a lot of people will tell you our countries most popular food is either Pie and Peas or Sausages and Potato. Nah dont beleive it. Sure people eat lots of them, but I really do not think it is our national dish. Come to think of it, I really do not think we have a national dish.
Foods I will not eat or try are Haggis and Tripe. My partner has worked in a lot of different countries and tried a lot of the local food. The only thing he would not try was Monkeys Brains. eeewwwww.

Banana's are a fruit though D, I was thinking more along the lines of National dished. Sorry just call me Doh Brain.

| 5. mimm45 (98) | 1 year ago | Balut, dinuguan and durian. These (though not so much the third one if you're not from Mindanao) are food that we Filipinos like.
Balut is fertilized duck's egg that's boiled and eaten in the shell. Because it's fertilized there is already an embryo inside. I'm not so fond of it because I always imagine the embryo as a living organism. Poor thing!
Dinuguan is a stew of pig's blood and meat. It is one of my favorite dishes and would definitely recommend you to try. It is not recognizable as pig's blood and doesn't smell like it. It's very savoury. Westerners call it chocolate meat.
Durian is what most people describe as a very foul smelling fruit. Personally I like the way it smells. I'd say it's aromatic rather than smelly. Some say it "smells like hell but tastes like heaven". Just don't eat/store it in confined spaces. You should try this as well.

I know a lot of people like mussels, but they just look too slimey to me.
Have I mentioned that I am a very picky eater? LOL

7. skinnychick (3317) | 1 year ago | I live in Chicago and we eat pretty normal stuff though we are a diverse city and there is all sorts of food here. We are known for deep dish pizza and Chicago Hot Dogs! Both are amazing.
| |
| |
|
|
dfn12968 (5538) | 1 year ago | Deep dish pizza sounds wondeful right now! But, what is a Chicago Hot Dog? What makes it different than any other hot dog?
| |
|
|
skinnychick (3317) | 1 year ago | A Chicago dog is a brand of hot dog called Vienna Beef. The dog is steamed and put on a poppy seed bun and garnished with mustard, tomato, cucumbers, sweet relish, a pickle, hot sport peppers (optional) and celery salt. There is never any ketchup on our dogs, don't ask why, it's just the way it is.:) That's a Chicago dog and they are amazing.

I am not a good cook... but i certainly have a great appreciation for good food...

9. Hatley (19163) | 1 year ago | Hi I live in Southern California in theUS and here we eat alot of oranges and grapefruit and fruits of all kinds plus lots of veggies too. Most people are really into good health . We are also fast food junkies and a lot of us eat hamburgers with cokes and french fries and plenty of catsup. down at Newport beach you can try 'our frozen chocolate covered bananas on a stick, its a regional thing and also we have smallcafes serviing crab and lobster and abalone. the fishermen go out in small boats and catch oddles of fresh fish and you buy it just minutes after it was caught, really delicious cooked fresh' fish. our state is indeed a neat state. in the middle of our state we raise tons of veggies and fruits.

10. jer31558 (2259) | 1 year ago | Hello dfn, I live in the Southeastern U.S, specifically Georgia. Here in the south, we fry everything and I do mean everything. My wife and I were in a restaurant not long ago and on the menu was fried ice cream. Now in my opinion you have to be good to be able to fry ice cream. That may be something that is available all over, but that is the first I have heard of it. Fried is the way to go.....now if I could just convince my wife of that...lol

dfn12968 (5538) | 1 year ago | Hi jer!
I have tried fried ice cream, both mexican and japanese. What kind did you have? I love them both...I think Japanese more. It's tempura fried.
I'm with you...anything fried can't be bad. LOL My waistline does not agree, unfortunately.

jer31558 (2259) | 1 year ago | Actually, I didn't have the fried Ice Cream, I had the fried Cheese Cake... to say that it was good would be an understatement.
