tools for beating high gas prices |
| |
| Understanding that Arizona consumers are looking for help when it comes to beating high gas prices, Governor Janet Napolitano added a new comsumer toolkit to her website. By clicking on the button on the right hand side of the page entitled "Tips for Fighting High Gas Prices" consumers will be linked to a convenient comprehensive list of web based gas saving tools. Many of the web tools are interactive. For example one link takes the user to a AAA site that allows driving vacationers to enter their destination along with vehicle information to generate a to the penny estimate of what gasoline for the full trip will cost. Other links offer carpool and bus information statewide as well as locater pages that will show the user where to find the cheapest gas closest to home. (yes, you can put in a zip code for any city and it will show you which gas stations are closest to your home) In addition if you'd like to get up to 35% better gas mileage on your car follow these simple steps Slow down on the freeway. In general the most fuel efficient speed for a car is below 60 miles per hour. Driving faster than this wastes gas. When traveling long distances use cruise control. Keeping a constant speed is more fuel efficient than slowing and accelerating at that same speed. Don't accelerate too fast. Racing away from stoplights forces your car to work harder than it needs to and wastes more gas than you know. You can also save gas by slowing down early for stoplights. Take your foot off the gas pedal and save. Avoid idling. For every minute that your car idles it burns approximately a half mile worth of gas. Turning off the engine while waiting in your car and avoiding the drive through will help you save gas. http://www.azgovernor.gov/ | | | | | |

| | That was a great post. We can all really use these resources with the high gas prices lately. I really found it interesting that toping off your gas tank at the pump can let vapors back into the fuel tanks underground. Also, every 5 miles an hour over 60 mph is like paying 20 cents more a gallon for gas. That is incredible. Thanks for the info! | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for these tips, LilYorkieBear. I have only now started turning off my vehicle rather than let it idle when I realize I'll be stopped for a bit. | | | | | | |

| | We live just on the other side of the train tracks that are noterious for having freight trains stop while it's still on the highway and be there for over an hour. Sure there are 2 other roads that cross those tracks and it's mandatory for the engineers to keep one of them open, but still, if you have to north of town your driving at least 5 miles out of the way. Either that or you sit and wait, hopefully with a good book to read. When I'm not in a hurry, I just shut my car off and read instead of sitting there all that time letting my car idle the gas right outta the tank. There are so many tips out there for saving gas it's unreal. | | | | | | |

| | Cool, thank you for the information in this post. I am actually trying some of it. Thankfully I can walk to work and have been doing that now that the weather has gotten nicer. I am also lucky enough to live in an area with public transportation, although the price of that has gone up too...along withthe cost of food, electricity...you name it, it's costing more it seems. That said, I still have to drive distances to see my family and that can really eat into my wallet. I have been trying to car pool more with my sister, as her car is more fuel efficient than mine. Mine is not horrible, but ihave been trying to change the way I drive as well to conserve more fuel. Using cruise control more, driving slower, and less starts and stops if possible. accoding to your post this will actuall help me, so that's good news. | | | | | | |
