Does anyone play twelve string guitar? |
| |
| About six years ago I bought a Tanglewood twelve string acoustic guitar. Although I love the sound of it I've always had problems playing it. Apart from having to press down on twice as many strings as on a six string guitar, the neck is a lot wider. It also doesn't help that the only twelve string sets that my local guitar shop sells are gauge eleven. Anything more complicated than simple open position chords is as a struggle for me (although I still try playing them). I usually can only play it for about twenty to forty minutes at a time before my fingers start killing me. So does anyone else here play twelve string guitar? If so do you struggle with it? | | 12 string guitar | | | | |

| | I think I'll start off by looking for some lighter gauge strings online. I used to use gauge nine strings and they weren't as much of a struggle to play. You should try out a twelve string if your local guitar shop has them. Although they're hard to play they sound amazing. | | | |

| | I think you're right that it's worth the effort. I love the sound of twelve string guitars. I think I will buy some lighter gauge strings online. I used to have gauge nines on my twelve string and I could manage it a lot better than I can now. | | | |

| | I've tried one before and I actually liked the wider neck, but I'm used to playing classical so narrow necks confuse me. I didn't try to play anything difficult on it though, and I only played it for about 10 minutes or so. It probably just requires more finger calluses and some more time practicing to get used to it. If my fingers are long enough for a wide neck, yours probably are too. | | | | | | |

| | I think if I get some lighter strings I might be able to manage it better. I used to have gauge nines on it and I was able to play things like David Bowies 'Ziggy Stardust' and Neil Youngs 'I Am A Child', which both have some tricky chords. I still couldn't play it as well as a six string and I could never play barre chords or certain other chords properly, but I could play it better than I can now. | | | |

| | No, I haven't tried one out yet. I've seen really great guitar players strumming the hell out of them though. Personally, I know that I'd have trouble with it for awhile, lol. I was surprised that playing guitar came so naturally for me. I would imagine that it's difficult for playing twenty minutes at a time. I wish you the best of luck on it. I know I could never play one, lol. | | | | | | |

| | I love listening to someone strum the hell out of a twelve string. I think I bought my twelve string partly because I saw David Bowie strumming the hell out of one. | | | |
