What irritates your baby's skin? email this discussion to a friend?

What types of things irritates your child's skin? What's your best store bought or home made remedy for rashes and irritated skin?

My little girl always gets terrible rashes on her chin when she drinks orange juice and citrus based drinks. So, those types of things are out. And, that's a real shame because pure orange juice is super healthy and contains lots of great vitamins and minerals.

I guess citrus is just too acidic. I'm allergic too, somewhat. It irritates my skin. So, maybe her sensitivity is hereditary.

When she was a baby, she was always getting rashes from everything, from diapers to laundry detergents. I tried all the various brands of detergents, including the "no fragrance" kinds and nothing worked. After awhile she grew out of the irritations. Now, her skin is perfectly normal.

Babies and toddlers get these weird rashes and breakouts from the slightest irritations. I think it's just their skin getting used to man-made fibers and such.

Sometimes, I've noticed that some diapers have a fragrance that manufacturers use, sort of like "baby powder" scent. And, that's irritating to some babies/toddler's skin.

My skin breaks out from most fragrances and so does my daughter's skin. So, we always had to be careful to select diapers and baby care products that didn't have any scents.

Other times, I've found that the irritation comes from the actual fiber in the clothes or diapers. I guess it just depends on the baby.

I've heard that the best thing for diaper rash is to let the child go without a diaper for awhile and to expose the rash area to sunlight. I never tried that. But, I hear that it works. What's your best anti-rash tip? What types of materials or foods irritates your child or baby's skin?

I have one that gets rashes from the stuff in diapers. None of mine could use any Pampers products...wipes or diapers. The same one who has trouble with diapers also is sensitive to just about everything...lotion, rash cream, sunblock. We even have to be careful about what's in his food...certain things give him runny diapers that cause really bad rashes even though we change him immediately.

For him the only thing that works is prescription rash ointment. For the others I preferred Balmex although if it was a yeast infection rash I'd just get regular yeast infection cream...on doctor's recommendation. I've been able to avoid major rashes with the now 18 month old by sticking with one brand of diapers instead of using whatever is cheapest that week and by using the super sensitive newborn wipes. He also doesn't drink orange juice often even though he likes it. One remedy I heard that I haven't had a chance to try since it was suggested is breastmilk...I was told that if youspread breastmilk over the affected area it will help heal it better than anything else.

Yes, I've heard that one too about the yeast infection cream. I'm glad you brought that up, other moms might not have known it!

My baby doc told me that little babies are often given an antibiotic after birth to keep them from getting fever and sick (mine had fever). And, that causes a hideous yeast infection and rash, in the little girls. So, she recommended the yeast infection cream.

The only thing that irritates my daughters skin is when she eats way too many tomatoes. They are one of her favorite things to eat. I got her some grape tomatoes the other day and she wants to keep eating and eating them, but if I let her then she will get acid butt when she poops. She has this prescription stuff that the doctor gave her that I use when she gets a bit of a rash, which is not very often.

Two of my children have suffered with exzcema from the day they were born, this is something that has been really hard to keep under control and has resulted in many experiments to figure out what sets it off!! I figured that cows milk is a trigger with them, it was fine with my son as he did not drink milk, but my daughter drinks gallons of the stuff!!

I had to change her milk a few times to get the right one, she can now drink semi skimmed milk now, I have to use fairy and non biological products which stops their skin getting inflamed and I have to use different creams on them all the time. I have to vary what I use because their skin gets used to it if I use the same one and stops working, so by using a different cream everyday it helps.

Leaving the nappy off a child with nappy rash IS the best thing to do as the skin heals brilliant, but there are two creams in UK that are excellent and they are sudacrem and bepanthen, both of which I also use as exzcema creams!!

Thank you for those tips and the product recommendation. I will look them up online and see if one of the online stores has them. You had so many wonderful ideas!

We had an issue with several different diapers and wipes giving my son a rash. HE could use Pampers baby dry diapers during the day without getting a rash, as long as I changed him RIGHT away (within minutes) every time he used the bathroom. But if he sat in a dirty diaper for any amount of time (like at nap time, over night, or in the car), he got really bad rashes from them. Same thing with some of the store brands. The only diapers he could use in those situations were the Target brand diapers (But they leaked overnight) and Huggies Supreme. As far as wipes go, he couldn't use any of the Huggies ones, or most of the cheaper brands. Pampers sensitive wipes and the Target brand new born wipes are the only ones he could use.

I still have to wake him up every 4-5 hours to change his diaper (he's day time trained), and sometimes he still gets a rash. It was a nightmare before he was potty trained! It seemed like he had a rash every other week. We tried everything we could find, including cloth diapers and prescription medicines. We kept food journals, etc.

What we found worked the best was EGG WHITES, though. One of my friends found it on a home remedy website, and it really works to clear up most of them. Usually, even if they were bad enough that they were bleeding, egg whites would clear them up within a day or two.

Egg whites on the rash or in the diet? I have never heard that one. That's phenomenal. Thanks for the idea.

Well my babies are 14 and 6 now but both have had problems with their skin being irritated and from allergies! My son was always allergic to lanolin and that was in a lot of creams prescribed for his eczema and available over the counter so i had to be very careful and then my daughter came along and I realised how lucky I had been that it was just lanolin I had to deal with before! My daughter gets skin rashes from so many things such as drinking milk to using bubble bath and certain soaps - we have to be very careful with that and avoid man made fibres that are going to be tight on her skin, she is allergic to certain creams and lotions and to tomatoes amongst many other things, she is also very allergic to penicillin . We have to have anti histamine's in the house and have lately moved her from the syrup form to the tablet form which unfortunately had the opposite eefect on her than it did to many people who get sleepy and tired - they made her hyper so we will be moving back to the syrup form! xxx

Oh yes! I know about the bubble bath one. My little girl used to get the worst rashes from that stuff. We had to switch to plain soap.

You have a full plate mummymo! But, you're the best mom, and I know your kids appreciate everything you do for them. Be well! Thanks for joining the conversation and sharing your day with us. You always add such wonderful insight.
