2. OreoCookie3 (18251) | 1 year ago | Oh Heavens, I am so happy for you. This is surely a milestone in your young son's life. I'm sure he will continue and keep on doing small things that add up to big praises. This is huge... we take things like this for granted, but I know what it is like. My God-granddaughter is 18 and still in diapers. She was injured as a baby by the DPT vaccine.

4. ljegbers (5761) | 1 year ago | I am so happy for you AND HIM. How liberating! I know when my son started to GO he just felt like a new man. I've recently got my girl to go, she's 8 and I was worried about finding diapers big enough for her (so refuses to wear pull ups).
I understand completely about doing the dance. We do the potty dance all the time and I know, as a parent to this, how wonderful and how much more fullfilling and the personal growth that they have at this.
Congradulations Mom! You've got a little man that's growing up!!

ljegbers (5761) | 1 year ago | I'll say the same to you! I'm not saying this as a referral but I'm a member of yuwie and there is a group on there specifically for parents of autism. I've tapped in there more than once and got great input, if not insite to things. Again, no referral, but I think it's worth checking out.

ljegbers (5761) | 1 year ago | You know I was thinking back to the time he was 5 and she 4 and how overwhelming it was. Now that they're older, they are both using the microwave by themselves. I keep a chart by the microwave with a picture of that food they like and pictures of the microwave with hightligher on the time and start button. They can put it in, set the timer and warm it up stuff themselves now.
Little Bears now knows all the ingrediants to making dinner rolls and Little Girl aka Princess helps with chorse, her job is to put dishes away after they've been dried. Keep going mom. I know sometimes it's hard to look for tomorrow in stages of development, but it's there. It's there. I get proud, sad and happy all at the same time. I think you know what I mean.

heavenschild (1716) | 1 year ago | I do know what you mean LJ and I have tears in my eyes right now over reading what you have just posted!
There is hope I know!
I have my boy to the point where he helps me put the groceries away and will put his toys in the bin with encouragement...He will also put things in the garbage if I ask him and follows simple instructions...He is even partially dressing himself and taking his diaper off and putting it in the garbage and then bringing me a clean one.....Huge gains from even a year ago! He was diagnosed at two and half as severe with developmental delay and now he loves to sing and is picking up so much language and phrases.....Well, I just burst with pride over the whole thing!
I could go on forever but I need to get to bed soon! My son is a very early riser!!!

ljegbers (5761) | 1 year ago | Keep encouraging music, even if you have to sing talking to them. The music stimulates them and speach can come easier. I sang/talked to my boy and he bloomed. He actually has a nice voice when singing (even sings in the shower) but she wasn't having it. She's needs more of a stimulate so I took a summer off work and taught her sign language. She's up to full sentances and now that she's comfortable with her hands, she's started talking. She's even talking with out sign, but that was her gate way to start communicating.
I love each and every new experience. Those windows and doors may only open for a few minutes a day, but the love and pride that we feel when the fload gates open, that, that right there is priceless.

heavenschild (1716) | 1 year ago | Good Morning LJ! I just wanted to say that I am in full agreement with you over the little and the big accomplishments...the little things are big for our kids!
What an awesome accomplishment in getting your children to communicate! I really commend you as I know what a huge feat it is!!!
My boy as I said was diagnosed as severe and so is never supposed to speak....But has a huge vocabulary now and so with a lot of work and repeating myself over and over he has come so far!!! I would hold the object and he could not have it until he made some sort of noise and then I would emphasize the word again....A long process but so worth it and we also used pictures in the beginning for his communication!
I have to go to work later today but I hope you have a great day!!
~Heavens~

5. freedomg (610) | 1 year ago | Congratulations I know that potty training is really hard for autistic kids ( from a friends experience). As for your question about our potty training stories. The toughest kids I had wee my younger two, the boy didn't was potty trained like 95% then they had to stay with my mom in law for a few weeks and she stuck him back in diapers. That took us back to square one till I caught his older brother and him in the back yard playing sprinkler. After that peeing was fun. Thank God for good big brothers. The girl would not go poop at all. She would hold it because she said it hurt even with mineral oil then after a few days she would go in her sleep. EEWWW but we have added a 1/4 cup of raisins to her daily diet and all is good. The older two pretty much trained themselves they hated being "icky".

heavenschild (1716) | 1 year ago | Thanks so much for sharing your story here! I think with any child it is a matter of allowing them to set the pace and waiting until they are ready....Making it a positive experience is also important I feel!

9. BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | Congradulations! Little boys are tough to train anyway, but adding autism as well has got to be tougher. Positive reinforcement is good for all kids. Yours isn't different that way. Good job.
