You Distressed?  email this discussion to a friend?

I went shopping for furniture today for just one piece. I wanted to get a low "bench" for my bedroom, to place on a wall that has a large, low window. My taste runs toward contemporary/modern, low and sleek.

I was hoping to get something that was upholstered in white or off white, to match the carpeting in my bedroom.

While browsing, I saw a number of items that were tagged as "distressed" and it "distressed" me. For a mere $899. I could buy a bench that looked like someone put it on the curb for garbage. The size was perfect ... eight feet long. It was nothing more than a wood bench that looked like its paint was peeling off. It was something that I WOULD put out for trash collection.

What's the obsession with "distressed" furniture at a price that is equally distressing? I swear that if I looked hard enough I could find something similar at Goodwill or at any other "used" furniture place.

Needless to say, I came home “benchless.”

Are you obsessed with "distressed" furniture, or for that matter, "Tuscany" inspired ... which has become so old?

Or, are you the type of person who likes Early American or another style that at least LOOKS like NEW furniture?

The world wants to know, people. What is your style?

Memo to self: Distressed is truly distressing, especially when it costs nearly $1000. to buy something you might be able to get for under $10. at a Goodwill store. (C) 2008 RJScott

Oh I have never heard of that before, distressed furniture...I don't go for any particulat style of furniture, I don't have expensive taste but in one room I have mostly polished pine furniture and in the other I have the darker teak furniture, I have bought a lot of my furniture from garage sales...

I like a modern farmhouse look I guess, whatever that is officially called. "Distressed" has gone a little too far in my opinion. I thought it used to have a nice woodsy, rustic look...now it looks like it's sat in a barn for 50 years and could fall apart if you breathe too hard on it. Cruddy looking furniture is just not my style.

I consider the workmanship too shoddy on new pieces. My husband and I prefer to purchase an antique that will, most likely, last another 30-100 yrs beyond it's present age. Our forefathers really knew how to take pride in a piece of furniture and make it last forever. I don't particularly like the 'distressed' items but I don't mind an item that has the original finish and an aged patina. I have my father's baby dresser, which I refuse to have 'refinished' because it's just as my grandmother kept it and it's still in fine shape. A few bangs and scratches, but they are family history and I cherish it as such. I, honestly, believe that most things are now made TO break and fall apart where that was not the standard in times past. LOL! Listen to me, sounding like an ol fart. ;)
