Life in the OLD days

If you look back on your life, say just starting out with a new hubby, or out on your own for the first time, can you imagine all the things we have now that we did not have back then, in my time we did not have microwaves, we didn't have air condition, we sit in front of the fan and sweat! There was no cell phones, no video game systems, no computer, some of us didn't even have cars, we rode the bus, to get to work, or go shopping. First thing I do is panic when the microwave goes out, what am I going to do, remember when we wanted some piece of meat for supper and we layed it out to defrost, now we just pop it in the microwave for a few minutes and it is ready to use. Do you ever wonder how we got by and didn't die because we didn't have a cell phone attached to our ear. Do you think life was better back then, would you ever like to go back to them days, or are you happy that you are in a time when so many things make our life so easy.

I do remember when I was young, and no microwave, no cell phone or even mobile phones for the cars. We played outside or played games inside instead of sitting in front of computers (what were those, oh yeah, big huge mainframe's that took up a whole floor at some office buildings) or video games. We watched tv as a family, because we didn't have 2000 channels and a tv in every room, and didn't know what a remote control was. Kids were kids and had imaginations and invented new games everyday. They ran, and played outside, something most of today's kids don't do. Oh and yes I remember Amana Radar-range aka. microwave lol.
I think we are going to be bringing a lot of things we did back then back as the price of fuel keeps going up and the cost of just about everything else. Today's kids have no clue about having to make a choice of what is really important and not just being able to run and buy whatever they want when they want it. They are fixing to learn a very (hard) valuable lesson in the times to come.
I think in a lot of ways life was much simpler and if someone wanted to talk to us they called the only phone in the house, which at one time was not touchtone lol I also remember party lines!

Not sure of your age, but I'm 48. And I agree kids now a days get whatever they want handed too them, at least most of them do. And you are right we watched what mom and dad watched lol, not that there was a lot of channels to choose from, and actually I don't remember the tv being on except in the evening. We all gathered at the table for dinner too. I do think that soon, these kids will have a hard lesson to deal with, as times get tighter with prices increasing everywhere we look. My s/o's niece told her mother she wanted to go to Eruope this summer! First off, ummmm NO, she's 16! When her mom told her she didn't have the money for she told her mother... 'find it' Ohhhell no! I know I couldn't put up with most of these teenagers now, actually I could, but they sure wouldn't like MY rules! LOL

You know, life in the "old days" wasn't too bad, because people didn't know any other way. No computers..no VCR's, no cells and everyone did just fine without the Wii, etc!
When I was small, there wasn't even color TV yet. When I was 6 we got the first one on the block and the neighbors came to watch and see what it was like. And when my husband was born there was no TV at all yet, so they were happy listening to the radio and it brought the family closer.
Remember when the family, on Sundays, got together with a few families and all went on a picnic for the day, by a lake or a stream?-I'd like to see more families doing that again, frankly!(Or sledding in the winters.)
And families HAD to eat together at the table, just because dad said so! And no excuses to not be there were allowed. You never see that anymore. And it's kinda sad!
As long as things we have now are only for occasional use, then I think they are fine. But they are not used as tools or once in a while. They are taking over family life! No more family bike rides, so the kids are getting fat! No more kickball games outside after dinner. We have too much now. People are lazy.
Frankly..I think life was BETTER in the old days. Having to use candles for light meant people went to BED on time. Nothing wrong with that. Bartering meant you got a better price and sometimes didn't have to pay at all, if ou were willing to do a chore for someone to get the food you wanted. Sure..it was hard. But people knew to work for what they wanted. They had a work ethic missing today in people!
I think everyone should have to live like that at least for ONE year of their lives, so they either decide to take it easy on the electonics..or so they at least appreciate what they have.

I agree with you totally. I remember going to a place as a kid that had 3 small ponds, my mom and granny would fix a picnic and my dad and grandad would fish

i prefer nowadays, when everything is going to be simple to do, as like coming up of internet. but i prefer the air of environment on the previous time when the polution was decreasing than nowadays.
i just wonder if we can make the environment back to the healthy environment as like previous time with the advance technology that we have at this moment

Communication is one thing which has become a boon. How speedy it is.Our days of waiting for letters was so painful.Definately I think of myself as being very lucky to be in this day with all the present facilities that are available. We know the past and the present wheras our kids cannot even imagine life in the old days as they have born with all these facilites

I would go back to the old days in a heart beat. Those were good days..We may have not had a/c but i don't remember suffering. We did not have cell phones and i do not remember missing them..I like a micro-wave but i still do not pop anything into a mirco-wave to cook, its only to heat up things that has already been cooked, and of course popcorn, but i prefered it the way my daddy use to make it,with oil and a big iron skillet...I really miss the good old days, when things were simple and we had so much fun back then...Now that we are so use to all these new fangled things it might be hard to be without them, but if they would have left everything along we would have been just as happy and never known the difference...The most important thing that progress has helped is DNA,and the medical field has advanced and those are the only 2 important things.................

I remember the time when there’s no internet yet or its not very famous yet. I used to send and receive letters through the post office. Imagine it will take few days or weeks before you get the message. Not like this time either we can send our messages or notes through email or sms. And it will only take seconds and you got you mail already.
I think I like it this time wherein everything is being done so fast. These advance technology that we are enjoying now are also a result of man's hard work and brainpower. And this also makes our life easier...

Well, sometimes I think people are spoiled now. Too spoiled now a days in fact. I was just remembering the other day back to my first TV and VCR I bought when I was first out on my own. It cost me like $500 and the first TV was only a 13 inch. I also remember my first computer when I was out of high school. It was a Commodore Vic 20, which was way before the day of the Internet.
Yes, things have really changed and come a long way. There were many Good things back then compared to now. In some ways, it would be nice to go back to them to where life was a little more relaxed, especially if we can go back to when Gas was under a Dollar as well.

I remember outhouses because we didn't have a bathroom in the house I grew up in. It was in a tiny town in Kansas. We heated water which we carried in from the windmill and poured it into a round galvanized bathtub. I know if it ever came to that kind of situation again that I could probably get along better than a lot of people. I know how to hunt, fish and build a fire to cook in and could get along living in a tent. Or in a shelter I could make for myself. Sure it is nice to have the things we have now but in some ways I think we were better off for we learned to do with what we had or made. And yes I have lived in ahouse since I grew up that didn't have a bathroom. In the last thirty years, even. This older woman knows how to survive.

Hello bdugas,
I prefer to live this time but I love my past experiences since it taught a lot of lesson in life. Such as being patient, creative, live simple and hardworking. The values I developed before all these technology came up help me to become a better person this time!

Hi there B Dugas!
I think what I wish that we have back then is the internet.
I remember back when I was studying, we have to go to the library and copy the information that we need to know for our studies, research or projects. Now all we have to do is type the keywords in the search bar and get everything, all the information that we need.

If i will look back in my old life, I can say that i'm thankful that i experience difficulties at that time because it make me become strong enough. Maybe you wonder what is it.. Our house before had no electricity. We don't have TV, computer, cellphone, etc. we do have a radio. We used to go to farm every weekends to work. I used to be a working student until now. Even it's hard for me as a student, but my old life is the foundation of it. And i'm happy for my life now. I don't want to go back in my old life. But i consider my old life as a treasure that I will look back and remember. Life now is too easy because of the technology.

Boy I do remember those days. I am 51 years old and I remember the times we didn't have microwaves or airconditioners or computers or fax machines and so on. I remember taking the bus to work, actually I had to transfer twice so I had to take three buses to get to work, Boy now I won't take one bus never mind three. How lazy I have gotten!
I remember when the computer at work took up a whole room and we had to have fans running to keep it cool. I remember when they said that eventually all households would have a computer and I thought, yeah right, I will never be able to afford to buy one. I have since owned three different computers. How times have changed,
for the better, probably. Life is pretty easy compared to our parents lives.

Good day.. I think the past and the present have their own advantages and disadvantages. If we lived in the olden times we have no choice but to adapt, if there are no cellphones, no microwave, no video games, and no air conditioners we have no choice but find ways to make ourselves more comfortable. Now, we have these things, we're more comfortable but we have new sets of problems that goes with it like pollutions, new diseases, more liberal or loose morals among others. i guess we just have to cope with it. Past and the present have their own advantages and disadvantages.

In the OLD days in my country there wasn't anything. I mean... ANYTHING. Miles of peoples standing in front of the shop, couse there was toilet paper (and there was something like 10 times less paper than people in the line). Same for the food and other basic things. If someone had a car then he was quite wealthy and had powerful friends. Everyone was bartering... you give me this and I will give you this. So it wasn't easy. Now there is tons of stuff to buy, but no moneys for most of the people so it isn't easy now too, but I think that it is better.
