My green wheeliebin has arrived |
|
We have a new scheme here that allows our garden waste to be collected and dumped one a fortnight, saving me the job. Once a week would be better, but you can't have everything. They have given me (at a cost of £26 ($52) per year) a "wheeliebin" dedicated for the purpose. Do you have a household collection for garden waste? What can you put in your bin?

nope, don't need a bin for garden waste, no garden!
Now, once a week, we can put out leaves, grass clippings in allowed bags or in dumpable bins for the city to pick up. They use it to make "Dillo Dirt" and sell it.

p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | Ours will end up as compost that we can buy. But as I intend to put loads of weeds in mine, I'm not sure that I shall want it back, even as compost.

ElicBxn (15429) | 2 years ago | Compost is supposed to "cook" the seeds so they die.
But, like I said, if I put anything out, its leaves, branches or grass clippings - and I pretty much don't do anything to get them out unless the temp is below 65º

2. gabs8513 (19765) | 2 years ago | I haven't got a Garden any more but the Landlord and his Daughter do have them as they both have a Garden The only thing I need to ask is p1 why are they charging you as far as I am concerned you pay enough Council Tax, so why do they want more money it is stupid
| |
| |
|
|
p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | I wonder why it costs too. Apparently the cost of green bins isn't part of the overall charge so an extra amount is payable. I think that it also depends on the political colour of the council. We have the lowest Council Tax in Wiltshire and I suspect that they can only provide these services at a cost.

|
|
mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | Must be something in that p1ke as we have a free 'green' wheeliebin and a recycling box free of charge although they now only empty household wast and green wast on alternate weeks which is a bit of a contentious issue here! xxx

3. webeishere (12460) | 2 years ago | I doing my own compoasting so my waste goes into the compost bin. Household food waste also goes into the bin so I am saving a lot of garbage from having to be picked up. I can get a container from my garbage collection company for yard waste etc for the cost of $16 a month but I don't need it at all anymore. Otherwise I can set a standadrd garbage bag curbside on collection day with yard waste for the cost of $3 per bag if needed. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | I compost a lot too. However, I have a number of woody shrubs and trees that grow like wildfire and don't rot down to fast. Plus many weeds that just won't compost properly, so I decided on the wheeliebin. I've filled it already! Doesn't get picked up until next week.

4. ellie333 (6793) | 2 years ago | Thos green bins are definately breeding I'm seeing them everywhere these days. I don't even have a bin we have to put our bags at at 7am on bin collection day and then every fortnight a van comes round to collect from a green box all glass, paper, material, batteries and tins and cans. We have to take all garden waste, cardboard and plastics up to the local tip. I really do wish we had one for garden waste and I wouldn't mind paying the £26 per year either for it, much more convenient. Where I used to live we had two large wheelie bins, one black for general rubbish, one green for food waste paper and cardboard and then we had two smaller bins for glass and plastics and tins which we used to have to walk up the road with to larger wheelie type bins and dispose of in the separate ones, clear glass, coloured etc. I much preferred this system, we also had a communal gardener so I didn't have to worry re that waste then. I really wish this area would introduce the wheely bins as the gulls split the bags open and it can look horrendous on bin day. Ellie:D

5. BCMike (3316) | 2 years ago | To decipher this for North American viewers...
A fortnight is some gibberish that has to do with two weeks. God only knows how that saying came into use. Perhaps twoweeks was your stint on duty in a fort I don't know...
And bin is a garbage can.
I am suprised that you have garden stuff to toss away. I would have thought you might compost your garden stuff. Folks in the UK love their gardens don't they? Isn't composting practiced there to near excess?
| |
| |
|
|
p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | Composting most certainly is practiced here an I am a devotee. However, I have several woody bushes that have to be pruned (no bonfires allowed here) and limited space for my composting. This doesn't replace the composter, just compliments it. The term fortnight comes from the old English "fourteen nights", of what significance that is I have no idea.

7. Angelwhispers (4595) | 2 years ago | Pike here in my home town all we have to do is pile it on the curb and once a week they come by with chipper machines and suck it right up. Of course this is a service we pay for in our trash and sewage portion of the electric bills. Out of the city limits they provide a trash bin at a much higher cost.

|
|
p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | They say that they can't afford to do it for free Angel so we have to pay. Grrrr.

Angelwhispers (4595) | 2 years ago | Pike ours is not free either the cost is intragrated into our electric bills every month. We pay of it regardless if we every use the service inside the city limits.

p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | The previous administration threatened fortnightly pickups and lost the election (not entirely this issue of course). The Lib Dems that came in (and they are just as much a joke as the last lot (Conservatives) are very green. But no so green as we get the pickups for free. We have a weekly domestic rubbish pickup and a fortnightly recycling and garden waste pickup. The garden waste we have to pay for.

9. anonymous101 (172) | 2 years ago | Do you actually have to pya or do you just mean out of council tax?
we have the bin with the green lid which is for garden waste and cardboard. This has made a huge difference. We didn't get them until quite a few months into the every 2 week normal bin collection. Originally they said that it wasn't suitable for us to have these bins so instead we had the plastic bags (what a waste) This was hopeless as we'd use them and never get any back because of greedy neighbours taking them. They once stole my glas bin though even though it had my address on, next recycling day they put it out with my address still on! the cheek of it.
Anyway i've drifted away from my point1 I managed to get a bin of them and it is wonderful, our normal bin is never full after the two weeks. It's amazing how much cardboard you use. We don't have as much garden waste but it helps us out when we do have a big garden clear up.

|
p1kef1sh (5716) | 2 years ago | Everything is included in the Council Tax except the garden waste which we pay extra for. We have a very low Council Tax allegedly, doesn't seem that way, and they can't afford to pay for the garden waste in the CT.
| |
|
|
anonymous101 (172) | 2 years ago | ah up here we get that included as part of our recycling scheme. What we could do with is a box for plastic though! Our council tax doesn't seem worth what we get!

10. Goodie123 (7548) | 2 years ago | We have wheelie bins for household waste, recycle waste and garden waste. The only one we do not have is the garden waste bin. We reuse all our grass cuttings as mulch. And do not have many tree's that need pruning, so for us a garden waste bin was needless spending.
Now tell me Pikey "where have you wheelie bin" ROFLMAO
