Landlord Says "You can live without air conditioning" |
| |
| I've been without air conditioning for a week. Last week, I phoned an air conditioning company and they came to check out the issue. He said that because I was renting he'd need to speak with the landlord to get permission to work on the unit. I might mention that I was going to pay for this. The landlord told him that he had an a/c company he uses and that he'd take care of it. Saturday I mentioned it to the landlord. He said "well you can live without air conditioning." Seriously? I live in Florida. The coolest room in the house the other day was 90 degrees. My room? A muggy 98 degrees. I have living with me a 9 year old; 5 year old; 18 year old and her 4 month old baby. All in a house that's reaching for 100 degrees farenheit. The news 2 nights ago was advising parents to "stay indoors with children" due to the heat and drought here in Florida.. but I can live without air conditioning? | | | | | |

| | No, You can not live without airconditioning, I live in Arkansas it has been over 95 degrees for weeks, there is no way anyone should have to live in these conditions. You should report this landlord to someone. It is not good for you or your children to live like this, a lot of people die from the heat. You pay to live there, this landlord is responsiable to fix this air for you. That is why you rent!! | | | | | | |

| | No kidding. For me.. I can deal. Due to fibromyalgia, I am usually colder than most. So it'll take a lot for me to become uncomfortable. My daughter (the 18 year old) has a naturally hot temperature. She's hot even when it's cooler (usually keeps her room around 55-60 degrees to be comfortable). So she's hating this. She's irritable and moody. Her baby is only 4 months old and can't sleep because she's so hot and sticky. I'm looking into what can be done. | | | |

| | Check your lease! first step, go to your landlord one more time. If it's on your lease you got him if not ask to speak to the property manager,he should have one if not go to the owner! Last resort get and attorney and you'll win because it's in the unit so it's implied, that it functions! The attorney will get his $$$ out of the settlement, it won't cost you anything except time! I'm a former manager and property manager! Goog Luck! tdemex | | | | | | |

| | I should clarify. This "landlord" manages the property. The owner is actually a Judge. | | | |

| | You did sign a lease! Give the mgr. another shot, then go to the judge, he should know the law, try to explain it as I did to you! Good Luck! | | | |

| | Good luck. If you document it right you could justify a stay in a motel for the health of your children. | | | |

| | I think the landlord would be better in dealing with the ac due to the fact that you have littles ones in the house. But you have no way of knowing how people will act. You just have to keep bugging him/her until they get you the ac. In the mean time buy mad fans that helps some. YOu have to say on the landlord; if you bug him enough he/she will get you that ac. | | | | | | |

| | There are two actions that you can take that will get this landlord back on his job. First, I would call the Board of health and tell them the living situation that is going on. If they don't jump down his throat and get him moving then I would place my rent in escrow. If you are current on your rent, then you are allowed to take your rent to the courthouse for them to hold until your landlord makes repairs, with thirty days notice to the landlord of course. Most landlords don't let the thirty days go by before the repair is made. | | | | | | |
