Don´t americans read John Steinbeck anymore? |
|
Yesterday I wanted to put to date my interested and went to the books I have read to put there my favorite "East of Eden" written by american Nobel prize winner John Steinbeck. The book is a saga showing 3 generatotions of americans in California and evolves around a theme so interesting as goodness and evil. It can be read and reread many times and you always learn something. To my surprice, only two other Mylotters were interested in this book and one was canadian. By the way, I´m not american either: I´m chilean. I hope to have some answers from fellow readers who appreciate this american genious of literature.

atacamaval (3046) | 2 years ago | It seems that at the Us they make the same mistakes in literature classes that they make in my country. They "make" youngsters resad books that are not appropiate for them. As a result, they hate them. Here it happens with Don Quijote: it took me a lot of years to pick it up again (and I fell in love with Sancho, the wise countryman). I have read The grapes of wrath and it´s difficult for a younng kid. I´m sure Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday are more appealing for that age. Thanks for sharing

The only one of Steinbeck's works that was ever taught was Of Mice And Men, and that was as part of the senior curriculum. I read The Red Pony on my own when I was in middle school, and I loved it. But not everyone is ready to tackle works like Steinbeck's when they're forced into reading them in school, and that really does tend to ruin the enjoyment for some.

2. tehmunkee (121) | 2 years ago | Steinbeck is a great writer - but he is not everyone's cup of tea. I think the reason is because not many people are interested in reading anymore and everyone is reading less and less, and watching movies of books now. I have not read East of Eden yet but I have read the Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and some of his short stories, but I will be sure to check it out.

tehmunkee (121) | 2 years ago | You most likely will not, unless you are going into an honors class. You probably will have to read Of Mice and Men, which is a very good book.
