Salmonella in Your Fridge? | | I can rest assured that there's none in mine. Last Sunday I did my weekly grocery shopping, exceeding my $85 a week budget by spending $149.20 for 51 items. Among those items were a half dozen tomatoes, which I tossed out today, not, knowing if they were infected or not. I had one slice on a sandwich yesterday, and though I didn't feel any ill effects from it, I couldn't trust that the Wal-Mart tomatoes were safe or not ... so they're now decaying in my trash container in the garage. I couldn't even return them to Wal-Mart for a refund or credit since I didn't save my register receipt. So what's next? Lettuce? Cucumber? Onions? I bought all of those too, along with some pears, grapes, apricots, watermelon, apples and avocados. Which do I toss out next and piss away still more bucks? The tomatoes cost me more than $4.00. I might be coming across as negative, and damn right. I am. If I must pay top dollar for my groceries, I think I have a right to expect them to be edible. Wouldn't you? Seems like when this sort of thing happens all we get from the distributors/retailers are a collective "Oops!" and little more. Memo to self: You say tomAYto, the grocery store says tomAHto … I say Salmonella! (C) 2008 RJScott

I can't remember if we have eaten any of them, although we haven't been sick. I have a child so I can't chance it with him, or us. It is frustrating and aggravating. I couldn't afford to drive back in and get my money back on it anyways. I think they rely on that too. How many people would return them, do you think, not many I would guess. I can't wait until our tomatoes start to ripen and I will not have to rely on the store for them for a bit. I heard that you can trust the ones that still have stems or are vine ripened, is that true?

From what I gathered from all reports, the infected tomatoes are those that cow or chicken doo-doo seeped into the ground and infected them. I don't know HOW vine-ripened tomAYoes or tomAHtoes were exempted, but that's what was mentioned on news reports I've seen.
