Salted apples????? |
|
hi my friends in Mylot,
In some discussions about food I read that many of our friends in the US sprinkle a little salt on apples when eating. I never heard of this before. So please tell me what salting an apple is good for, mainly as we are recommended to use fewer salt to improve our eating habits. Thanks a lot. Have a wonderful day.

11. olivemai (2765) | 2 years ago | I do not know what it is for, but I have heard of watermelon being salted before serving it! It is good, although I try not to use salt from the shaker anymore! There is too much salt in other foods already! Maybe people use the salt to help retain some of the water from the fruit?

book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hi olivemai that could be the reason for doing this. Have a wonderful day.

olivemai (2765) | 2 years ago | Thank you! I love the taste of salt, as I was a salt person rather than a sugar person, but it affected my legs with pain and swelling, so I had to give up adding it to my fruit and other food!

|
|
book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hi olivemai, sounds familiar. I never was a salt person until I became diabetic in 2006. In fact I cooked almost without salt before. but now I tend to use more salt and my feet and ankles are swollen too......
| |
|
|
olivemai (2765) | 2 years ago | I understand! I heard there is some relationship between salt and sugar affecting diabetics! It runs in my family too so I have been as careful as I can! It does not seem to be enough no matter what I try!

12. Lambchoper (417) | 2 years ago | Salting a good juicy firm Granny Smith apple is good for my taste buds. A little salt on an already tart apple is nirvana. Try it you'll like it.
As far as salt not being good for you..I may not live forever but at least it won't feel like it because I deny myself the simple pleasures.

book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hmmmmm my friend, my hubby has to watch salt intake bec of blood pressure and such and thats the reason why we have diet salt and normal salt in our household.
| |
|
|
Lambchoper (417) | 2 years ago | It's good you are watching out for your husbands health.

|
olivemai (2765) | 2 years ago | I think that just like with other health issues, people will only change their lifestyle or diet if it affects them immediately! The problem with sodium for me, is that my legs begin to hurt almost immediately after eating anything with too much sodium! It is like iron and fluoride, a little is good but it is added to almost everything and is now way too easy to overdose on it! I think it is great that you do not have a lot of pain in your life, or you would have to figure out what is causing it, like the rest of us!

book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hi Cats we only have this sort of diet salt which is super expensive. I bought it fot hubby nevertheless and use it in salads and such when I cook for him. Maybe I find something similar in the bigger supermarkets around here. I am sure you have a nice day with that great update on yours giving wings to you......
| |
|
|
olivemai (2765) | 2 years ago | At first, I tried this as my mom was using it for my dad! But I discovered that it is not really that much better than regular salt, and whenever possible, I substitute other spices or flavors for the salt! You will barely miss it!
| |
|
|
book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hi olivemai that was how I cooked before becoming diabetic. But somehow I seem to crave and need more salt now. My doctor said its all in the head but I dont believe him.

16. mcat19 (1030) | 2 years ago | I'm allergic to apples, so I don't think salt would help me. Sometimes I can eat them peeled, but not always. I can only eat them cooked to be safe.

|
book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hi mcat sorry to hear this, fortunately I dont have food allergies/as long as you dont count diabetes as an allergy to sugars or wrong carbs.......... so I can imagine it is not easy.

17. RLFinNash (5721) | 2 years ago | hello book
oh my gosh! because when you sprinkle salt on an apple it brings it to life and makes it taste even better than it already does! also, sugar tastes good also sprinkled on different kinds of fruit. so that is why that we put salt on apples. lol not worrying about the sodium intake while eating the apple. also, the caramel apple dip is delicious with an apple. and years ago, my Grandfather used to dip his apples in salt. he would put salt in a saucer and dip his fruit in that. salt is also good sprinkled on radishes as well. the salt takes the bitterness out of the radish. and i do not know how that a salt substitute would taste with fruit. i have never tried that before. well i just wanted to stop by here and give you my opinion of sprinkling salt on fruit.
have a beautiful afternoon.

book1962 (14761) | 2 years ago | hi and thanks I have tried it and liked it so far. And salt in radishes is a must have here. You remind me I wanted to fix some salad for our late dinner. I slept too long this afternoon bec of that herniated disc and now it means hurry up in the kitchen. lol.

RLFinNash (5721) | 2 years ago | that was a fast response back! and your very welcome.

olivemai (2765) | 2 years ago | The old radish trick! It is hard to resist using salt on radishes. Just remember, that one day's worth of sodium is about a teaspoon, and you can get most of that from frozen and canned foods! Check here for more details: http://www.sparkpeople.co...

19. hornswaggled (1974) | 2 years ago | I have never salted an apple but have always salted my watermelon. It makes the sweet, sweeter somehow. I know we aren't supposed to use too much salt but I use sea salt and it will not cause problems with my blood pressure.

20. CherylsPearls (1024) | 2 years ago | I'm from the U.S., but I don't salt apples! Ok, I lie...we had apple trees when I was growing up, and I used to climb them with the salt shaker. Of course, I only did it to green apples because they were sour. I used to salt lemons and eat them, too! lol
But now I don't salt fruit at all. If melon is not sweet enough, like cantaloupe, I just leave it at room temperature to bring the flavor out before eating it. My Mom has high blood pressure and is salt sensitive, so I've pretty much learned not to add salt to things.
