You go to a relative or friend's house suddenly. Once going there, you press the calling bell once, no response; twice,no response; thrice, no response. And you know, inmates are there. What will you do? Will get frustrated and go away? Or stay there some time and keep trying? At least, how many times you will press the calling bell, before you decide to go?

I usually press the doorbell twice to begin, wait a full minute and press twice again. Many people, myself included, cannot be sure that it was their doorbell when it is rung only once. If I'm absolutely certain that there is an adult there, after ringing the bell and waiting twice, I would knock loudly on the door, or pull out my cell phone and call their phone. Their doorbell may be broken, or they may be engaged in a noisy activity. Since many children are trained to not answer the door if they are home alone, If there is any case that is the case, I would come back another time after the first try.
