Can a girl wear boy's underwear? |
|
My baby and i went shopping tonight for some big girl underwear for her to wear in preparation for potty training. She wanted boy style underwear, Diego kind to be exact. I really wanted to get it for her, who would know, really, but they didn't have her size. The styles she got, I let her pick, but I know if I let her, she would choose the boy style with the little front door.
What do you think? Should I find the Diego undies for her and let her wear them with pride? Or should I just let her forget them and enjoy the girlie ones she picked?
And why can't I find plastic covers?!?!

Plastic cover? You mean like they make for cloth diapers? I didn't think you were suppose to use those with undies because they were too diaper like and defeated the purpose.

Katesmama (3223) | 2 years ago | Well, my friend used plastic covers over the undies, and it still worked well for her. I heard that the underwear or cloth diapers allow the child to feel wet and uncomfortable, which is why they transition to the potty easier, because the diaper absorbs wetness away. In effect, undies with plactic pants are more economical and environmental that pull ups. I just look to prevent leaks. I don't mind laundry, but I hate cleaning Mall carpets! LOL!

Katesmama (3223) | 2 years ago | She's not into Dora. I don't think I'd put her in them to go out, only because I would not want her to feel bad for what she likes that is different from other kids.
I did find a US site that sells them at an affordable rate..
I hope it helps you

Thanks for the site it may come in handy soon!

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 2 years ago | Hi Heavenschild and Katesmama, I loved the link too. I wish I'd had those when we went through potty training. I could only find the plastic covers for babies and those were way too small.
I will keep the link for future reference. Fingers crossed! LOL!

Katesmama (3223) | 2 years ago | She's always been one for Diego, and Pablo from the Backyardigans, so I would have gotten her either of those. Those are her reward stickers at home, so I couldn't think of a better way to get her interested in big girl undies. She doesn't know they're boy style, so i don't really see the harm until she's around the mean older girls at my gym's nursery. And that's simple to avoid. she's only two, so it will be a long road til she's wearing them to the gym.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 2 years ago | Hi Heavenschild! Yes, I'm hoping! Money was good for awhile so I thought it was the perfect time, but now that his schedule has been cut back, baby planning is sort of on hold. But I am still making plans and hoping. I know what to expect this time, what I'll need supplies wise, clothes, diapers, etc. So, I am doing some pre-baby shopping and stockpiling at sales and such.
That's what I did before my daughter was born. I bought clothes three years before I got pregnant and then put them in a box and saved them. She got so much good use out of everything I bought and I felt like the best mom for knowing in advance what she would need.
So, yes, fingers crossed. And, good luck to you too.

4. honeydew82174 (1240) | 2 years ago | I can not find plastic covers either. I do not think they make them any more now that they have all the new products out like pull up's. I would let her wear the boy undies. What is it hurting? you will both have a good laugh when she gets older. Besides if it helps potty traning why not!

5. beautyqueen26 (9134) | 2 years ago | That's too cute. You know that you're giving me cavities with all this sweetness! Crest thanks you! LOL!
As far as undies go, give her what she wants. Maybe she will just forget about it. If she puts up a fuss, maybe a pair or two with Diego plastered on them, wouldn't be so bad.
Maybe that would give her confidence to wear big kid undies. Maybe it's a tiny concession she is asking for in exchange for growing up and being a big girl!
My daughter is good about doing that. She will do what I ask, with a few strings attached. It's OK with me.
You're the mom, so you know my best advice! Do what your heart tells you to do. Do what you feel is best for your little girl.
Another idea would be to get plain cotton undies for little girls. And, then get an iron on from the craft store and put it on the undies. Do you think that would work?
I guess it could. Let me know. It's just a thought. Or maybe use a Diego sticker she could put on the undies each time she wears them. Would that work?
Just some ideas! Be well. You know my thoughts on the whole kid thing. Whatever they want is fine with me.
Be well. Have a blessed and beautiful (and stress free) weekend.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 2 years ago | You're totally right! My little girl responded very well to the stickers we gave her when she was potty training. It was one of the things that really worked.
She has tons of Dora the Explorer stickers and gets one each time she does something good, like eating her noodles or picking up her books.
She's still young, so we reward anything that remotely resembles good behavior. Hopefully she will want to do more good things! That's the dream!
Best wishes to the both of you.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 2 years ago | That's very sweet! Mine is four. She's mommy's little helper as well.
She loves using my computer and playing her little games.
When she was about three years old, she was having trouble speaking and putting sentences together verbally so we got reader rabbit and elmo cd-roms.
She began to use them on her third birthday and within a month was doing very well speaking.
I'm the biggest fan of those cd-roms!

6. jonesy123 (3254) | 2 years ago | I don't even know why they put that little front door (lol) there for the little boys. They don't even know yet what to do with that. Mine just pulls down the undies. If he would have to try to get it out the door first he would be wet by then, lol.
Anyhow, since he has older sisters, he did have to wear pink and purple training pants. I wasn't about to buy boy ones as he wouldn't wear them for long anyway. But even when he switched to regular undies, if he had too many accidents he had to use girlie undies. I wasn't about to run the laundry for just his undies, lol.
I would say, whatever helps to get them trained. They have to like what they wear or they won't like to work with you on potty training. However, since you could not find the Diego ones she wanted, don't worry about it too much, she probably has already forgotten about it anyway. Just make a big fuss about her wearing the big girl undies and how proud you are of her. She'll love them and forget about Diego, lol.
Forget about the plastic cover. That won't hold up diddle squad if they wear regular underwear. If you want them check with a baby specialty store like babies-r-us. Any store that sells quality clothes diapers should have them. But quite frankly, they will be a hindrance. Your child is supposed to learn to pull the undies up and down themselves. That's part of the grown-up feeling they get. The plastic cover will make things too difficult.

Katesmama (3223) | 2 years ago | I am excited about potty training, and I thought a good start would be to get her excited about big girl undies. She mimics me on the potty, and she's really gone twice. Its so fun!

7. Trace86 (3407) | 2 years ago | I don't see any harm in her wearing boy style undies if they are what appeal to her right now. Maybe later when she sees other girls wearing Disney Princesses, she will want those instead then. I think whatever appeals to her sense of individuality is wonderful. Don't stifle it until you absolutely have to.

8. Polly1 (8477) | 2 years ago | I would keep her in girl undies. Little boys and girls are learning their roles and identities. Its not a time for them to be confused. I haven't looked for plastic pants in ages, I don't even know if they still make them. There are so many people who use pull ups now. Good luck on the potty training.

kaysue4 (627) | 1 year ago | I think the new pull ups would hinder training because they feel like they are still in a diaper. I am getting ready to train my grand daughter that is visiting here for a month and the parents have had a hard time training her, she is also hearing impaired and not sure mentally though, but they still treat her like a baby, so she is going to act like one, IMHO.

9. lilybug (15346) | 2 years ago | I say let her wear the DIEGO underwear. Why not? Who is gonna see them? My daughter has some DORA ones. I got her plastic covers at Walmart next to the cloth diapers. They are Gerber brand I believe.

Katesmama (3223) | 2 years ago | I looked by the cloth diaper, and no go. At Target, they had padded training pants, so I got three pair of those. I did find a website that sells Gerber ones, so I'm going to call some local stores first before I order them.

10. cjgrooms (3194) | 2 years ago | I babysit my 3y/o niece and she has a little dresser here where we keep her clothes and undies. A couple of weeks ago she decided that she was going to take some of her clothes home so she got a bag and started picking stuff out to take. I noticed that she was taking out all of her little boy panties (her "best buddy" gave them to her when he outgrew them) and putting them in the bag i asked her didn't she think that she should take her pretty girl panties and leave the boy panties to wear here. Here is her answer... "My mama likes my girl panties but my boy panties has cartoons and feels better". Needless to say the boy panties went home with her after i called her Mom to explain WHY her adorable little girl was bringing home boy underpants and not the cute little girl panties she bought her. I don't think the type of underwear she wears to learn to potty train will do any permanent harm, Just make sure you get plenty of pictures because when she gets older she isn't going to believe it for a minute!LOL
