Teen dies of alcohol poisoning at school - who's REALLY to blame here?  email this discussion to a friend?

All right. Now, I hate my school for a lot of reasons that I wont list here, but one of them is the fact that it turns regular teenagers into alcoholics because theres nothing better to do =|

So last year, we had some frat boy, party animal kid drink himself into a coma and died a few days later because he didn't know his limits. Now his parents went nuts and started suing INDIVIDUALS at the school - they're trying to sue the dean of studens, the presidents of greek life, 2 women who help with greek life activities... NONE of these people put the drinks in the kids hand, nobody knew what he was doing and yet somehow, nobody at the party is being blamed nor is the kid who ended up killing himself.

Now, I realize the parents are grieving but suing right and left won't bring their son back, nor are they suing anybody who deserves to be sued. None of these people were involved in their sons death, and not all parties can be monitored, not all of them get broken up by public safety and not all of them have somebody responsible there to babysit.

This just really frustrates me a lot, because my school is full of people like that and their parents. Nobody is willing to accept responsibility for themselves, and they're quick to point fingers at whoever is weaker than them and can't fight a lawsuit glare. I know I might sound a lot angrier than usual, but this completely grinds my gears because I know these people being targeted in the lawsuit, and they're petrified. They don't know what to do, don't know why they're being blamed and don't know what they're going to do if the suit goes bad. They're good people who never mean harm to anybody, but these kids parents are pretty blind to that.

Am I the only person who thinks that people have to accept responsibility for themselves nowadays? These parents cant accept that their son made a mistake, and while it was a fatal mistake, he was essentially a grown man who needed to be responsible for his own actions, and unfortunately he wasn't, and none of his "friends" could manage to take a beer out of his hand. Some friends =|.

We actually had another case like this at my school too, involving heroine using. THAT story is a lot more gruesome though, but it goes to show... this school is awful.

What do you guys think, anyone got any experience seeing stuff like this happen too? Even if ya haven't feel free to toss some opinions my way. I'm not here to judge what anyone thinks, I'm just here to read it :]

Well, this is always a sad thing when this sort of thing happens to a person so young. But as far as I can see, boys will be boys, The son is the only one that can be blamed for his death, nobody made him drink this much, he was probally trying to impress someone at this party.

agreed. i think he was probably rushing to be in the frat, and even though my school really doesnt do hazing (we don't say we dont, and then do it anyway), he probably thought it would make him look cool if he could drink more than the other guys. fat lot of luck it did him :\

Hi mornings, I'm so sad on to hear that. It's kind of hard to blame anyone. Before this I heard on alcohol poisoning. Too much alcohol will let us die. I think in this case, everybody should open their eyes on alcohol. It made a proof that alcohol is that dangerous. It's dangerous for everybody! just think will you die if you don't drink alcohol? Instead, we die if we take such alcohol. There are lot of i mean infinity beverages in this world that we could enjoy rather than enjoying alcohol. I always have that in my mind. So why should we must take alcohol. If there's no such water in this world rather than alcohol it takes sense for me to take it. LOLOLlol. So I think we must teach the youngsters and encouraging them not to take the alcohol.

Exactly, there are so many other things to drink why do you need alcohol??

i wonder how people can drink that much anyway. personally, i dont even really like the taste or the burn of alcohol very much. i'm not a big fan at all, really lol

unfortunately, yeah. he had to make an example of himself for everyone to see that just because we're young, doesn't mean we're invincible.

thank you so much for responding!

Im sorry to hear about the boy who died.I think it's hard to blame anybody unless someone force him to drink too much that cause him poisoning.Well we better watch out our kid then especially when they are teen age.

Well maybe this is the way the parents for this boy are grieving, for now.It isn't right he is the one to blame, and perhaps the kids he was with.Although I find it hard to blame the kids he was with because they were probably drunk themselves, and how were they to know what his limit was or how much he even had to drink.
Hopefully his parents will come around soon, because even if this is how they are grieving for now,the real grieving has to start sometime or they will never get through it.
I hardly think the people they are suing deserve it and I doubt they will win,it is unfortunate that these people will have to hire lawyers and such to defend themselves.I think if a person drinks themselves to the point of alcohol poisoning it is their own fault. However I do also think that when it is a fraternity thing and the person is being pressured to drink for a fraternity initiation that is whole nother story, then they are all responsible.
Just my thoughts
