Is Text Messaging Really That Hard? |
|
My husband has started a new job and it will be a bit before they get his office and computer set up. I am used to being able to contact him via IM throughout the day and I really miss him and that contact. I hate to call him all the time, so I am wondering if text messaging would be the answer. It looks really hard to me, I just don't get it! Am I too old to learn? LOL! Please give me your advice or input. I just do not understand how one can get a message out of just those number keys. LOL!

1. BCMike (1677) | 3 months ago | When you are in text mode on your phone, each of the number keys corresponds to letters just like on your landline key pad. In texting, you simply press each number until the letter you are looking for next comes up. The "0" is often where the space bar is to seperate words. If you go to your cell phone server's web site, you can often text directly to that phone from home too.

BCMike (1677) | 3 months ago | It's really easy once you get to know your phone. One of the options many phones come with is the "T9" dictionary. With that feature turned on, it will guess many of the most common words and ask you to spell the ones that aren't common. And then it will store that word in the phone's memory. Play with it a bit. It's not that hard. You got this? You'll get that too.

2. rjscott (2064) | 3 months ago | Irish, some services online permit you to send IMs via your computer to a cell phone. AOL is one of them, and you can open an account free if you have a high-speed ISP. Think about it though: Will your husband's cell phone be charged for each text message you send? Texting from a cell phone is clumsy, in my opinion. I don't use it at all, but I do have a MEMO function on my phone that I use almost every day. Some cell phones have options that include entry modes you can switch to and from. Mine has: Option 1: Word -- I find this diffult to use. It "assumes" words, often those not intended, so I don't use it. Option 2: Abc -- only the first word is capped Option 3: ABC -- all words are capped Option 4: 123 -- input produces only numbers Option 5: Includes ., @,?,!, -, &, ', + and= Nah, you're not too old to learn, but you'd be better off using an IM dialogue rather than cramp those fingers of yours with a teeny tiny keypad.

We have Cingular/AT&T. Honestly, I think the text messaging is too much work for nothing much. LOL! But what you mentioned sounds like something I would like to look into. Possibly, I could send to him and then he could call back when he was not busy.......

3. thaMARKER (545) | 3 months ago | For me, texting is like one of my forte. hehehe.. I can text without looking on to keypads.:) I like texting before especially if you're texting with your especial someone you know.. hehehe.. Anyway, it's just a matter of practice plus it's cheaper and it's more exciting than talking over the phone or calling him through your cellphone.

Irishfrndly65 (2193) | 3 months ago | It's not cheap here. My niece pays 5 cents per text message ON TOP of her cell charges. She has a pay as you go phone. Unless we get a package it's not cheaper here.

You better make sure what kind of plan you have on your cell phone, or see how much a plan for text messaging is, it can get expensive. I don't do it too often, it costs me .20 a message everytime I send one, and it can quickly add up if your not careful. All my incoming messages are free, but if I send one out it costs, unless I pay for a plan, but I don't need the extra bill every month.

4. MoonlightSerenade (522) | 3 months ago | Don't ask me. I only even had a cellphone for three weeks. Someday there will be no landlines and I will be lost. Those little pads look very hard to use for big fingers. Not to mention, which part of my bifocals would I have to look at them at? I suppose anybody can adjust and get used to anything. I used to be terrified of computers, till I found out I couldn't blow up my own, someone else would have to do it.

7. danishcanadian (13951) | 3 months ago | I don't send text messages that often, but I have on occasion. The key is to remember the phone keyboard. 2 abc 3 def 4ghi etc. Watch your screen as you're texting. If you want the letter b, you'll type 2 twice in quick succession. If you want to txt the world "coffee, for example, you'll type it like this. c= 222 o= 666 f= 333 f= 333 e= 33 e= 33 and either the pound or star key on your phone should be a space key, and the other will be shift, if you want a capital letter. On my phone the 1 key allows for punctuation. Just fool around with your phone without sending the message, to get the hang o it. I'm getting pretty good at it, even if I've only done it a few times. -Leah

8. coffeebreak (2587) | 3 months ago | I honestly have tired to get into the texting phenomanon (that is spelt wrong, I know!) but bottom line - I HATE IT!! My daughter and son will hardly call me - they text. If it isjust a simply yes or no answer...okay it can be acceptable, but to text a conversation...not in this lifetime! Today I asked my son to give me the schedule for the week for babysitting his little girl. He tells me tomorrow, but not the details. I text back for details, and what about THurs and finally just told him to call me tonight. My daughter got me a new phone and the buttons are so narrow and that multiple pressing and a press doesn't connect so the wrong letter is displayed...oh my gosh, I am aggrivated just talking about it! CALL ME - if you want to talk to me call me! If I ask you to call me - CALL ME. ON the other hand, my daughter is the texting queen - one month she announced she had sent/received 6,000 messages. And she does what else with her day......?

Irishfrndly65 (2193) | 3 months ago | LOL, what I think is totally hilarious is when I am with my niece(16 yr) she will be texting away the whole time I take her to town to do HER errands. I say, "What are you doing" niece:"texting Robin" Me: "is she texting you back", her:"yes", Me:"then why don't you save that 5 cents PER text and just call her?" Her: rolls eyes I bet it changes when daddy is no longer buying her cell phone minutes, either that or she will be another one of the young people who are in debt up to their eyeballs and bankrupt by 30. LOL!

coffeebreak (2587) | 3 months ago | Although I am chuckling, you might have an addict on your hands too! Both my kids 26/30 do that! They will come over and their cells beep and jingle and they jump check it and text back and all the little sounds and tapping going on! Good grief, you came to visit me...am I that boring? But they go on with it and I have to admit, they are both very fast at it! I just don't know how they have so much to say...every hour... of every day!!! They have a family plan, and put me on it and we text free and calls between us are free, and athey pay mine in exchange for day care I provide! I hate texting. I also read a thing on Yahoo news one day that thumb cramps and ailments of the thumb are on the rise - because of the texting craze and because of the video games that use the thumb for all the button pushing. What ever happened to two cans and a string!!!

9. angelwhispers30 (1670) | 3 months ago | Text messaging sounds confusing but it really isn't. Because each phone is different it might be an idea to have a friend come over and show you how to text from your phone until you're more comfortable with the idea. When your phone is in text mode, the numbers on your keypad all correspond to a letter. You just press the number with the right letter on, until that letter shows up on the screen. Once you've typed your message out, you will be asked to enter the phone number that you want to send it to. You can either type in the number if you know it, or there may be an option to allow you to scroll through the names in your phone until you find the person you want to send the message to. Then, simply hit Send, and you're done.

coffeebreak (2587) | 3 months ago | My problem with the multi press of one number to get choice of 3-4 letters is that if there are following letters next to each other in a word that have that same button, you have to press it once for the first letter, pause and wait until the little cursor moves over then press it 3 times for the next letter on the button to the word. Like BACK - press 2 once, wait, then press 2 twice, then wait, then press 2 a third time. Good grief, what a waste of time! and then you have to make sure you press it specifically and properly for the right letter. You press to soon and it changes the letter you just pressed. In BACK, if you press 2 for the B and then dont wait long enough and press 2 again intending to get the A, that press changes the B that you got first and it turns into a C. THis stuff irritates me to no end! I am constantly erasing. YOu say "slow" down...well isn't texting all about speed? Doing a quick text as opposed to spending the time to make the phone call? I know charges are a bit of an issue depending on what you have but still, buy more minutes instead of more text msgs.

10. steffyhoney (649) | 3 months ago | lol no texting isnt really that hard...its ok I guess but it is time consuming sometimes when you have to push the number 2 3 times just to get the letter C. But it works and saves from calling all the time. It definately saves on my minutes. That texting got annoying to me so I went and got a new phone with a keyboard thing in it. And its much easier! lol just like talking on a computer somewhat, just smaller.
