what is better to use, astringent or toner? or do they have different purposes? i'm sorry, it's not quite clear to me. i don't want to be using too many products on my skin so i want to know what better product to use. what is the best thing for someone in her early thirties to use if she is concerned about maintaining a healthy skin, if not age defying?

I would just use a mild toner, nothing to harsh..Something that protects your pores and facial cells.

This would depend on what type of skin you have. If you have oily skin, astringent is the best to use. Always use the same brand of cleanser and toner/astringent on your face.

Difference between Skin Toners and Astringents

Skin toners and astringents differ from one another on a number of basis, the main three are:

Difference on the Basis of Composition

Astringents comprise of certain substances like witch hazel or alcohol. In other words, they are either chemical-based or alcohol-based. However, toners contain neither chemicals nor alcohol.

Difference on the Basis of Skin Type Suitability

Astringents are the best used in case of oily skin or combination dry/oily skin. Conversely, toners should be the only choice for dry or sensitive skin. This is because the chemicals/alcohol in the astringents irritates sensitive skin and makes dry skin even drier.

Difference on the Basis of Effects

Astringents are useful in controlling surface oils and lowering skin’s pH, after cleansing. At the same time, they also tighten the open pores of the skin. On the other hand, toners are mainly used for keeping the skin hydrated and providing nourishment to the skin.
