Teacher "burnout"! What can be done? | | "Teacher burn-out" is a fairly well-documented phenomenon in main stream education but precious little has been researched or written about it related to ELT. When mentioned at all in relation to ELT the reference tends to be a short article on the web or in the kind of teaching magazine that many expatriate teachers abroad do not have access to, such as the Times Educational Supplement or the Guardian Educational Supplement. ELT can be stressful enough in one's own country ( all those manic summer courses spring to mind!) but for teachers working abroad there are particular stresses and strains that that may cause or factor into depression, and there may be precious few resources to help the sufferer."Here are some possible causes of stress:Culture shock The language barrier Home-sickness Heavy workloads Split-shift schedules Pressure on personal relationships, particularly with spouse The person may not be working, They may be caring for children They may have been left behind in another country They may have been opposed to moving, They may be forced to give up career and friends etc…. Any teachers out there you have experienced any of this and found a way to overcome this problem, please share here how you did it?

Marleysa (2936) | 1 year ago | Where do you live Fishmomma? It doesn't sound like things are moving "forward" there, but rather "backwards"? Most places need more schools and yours is closing some down? Seems more and more that our governments just don't care enough about education as they used to, does it? They spend millions of dollars on (n my opinion) useless wars and stuff like that when in the meantime we and our children suffer with the consequences, isn't it? Not enough money left over for proper health care, we hear, not enough money for proper schools,we hear and not enough money to subsidize the ever increasing oil prices and so and so on..

Fishmomma (3523) | 1 year ago | I live in Southern California. The problem is lack of funding and the state doesn't have the funds to pay teachers in some areas of this state. Many companies are having a hiring freeze and no salary increases this year. I'm happy to have a part time job, which is helping me make ends meet while my business is in trouble.

| gary_law (75) | 1 year ago | It is a serious problem worldwide. Teachers are blamed for being lazy and having high salary. Everyone studied at school so they think they know everything happened at school, and so do those government officials, but do they?
