Naturally Curly Hair-Girls....Guys? |
|
Ok, I stopped perming my hair about 15 yrs ago and found out it has natural curl. I read this book, Curly Girl by Lorraine Masse: http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Girl-Lorraine-Massey/dp/0761123008 Which gave me alot of ideas and info on caring for curly hair. I didn't realize that curly hair was mostly dry hair and that is why it frizzs so easily. It all made a lot of sense. I also found a few good websites that helped: http://www.ylcf.org/gotcurl/ http://www.naturallycurly.com/ http://www.mixedchicks.net/The Mixed Chicks products are great, especially the leave in conditioner. I was wondering what other naturally curly's have learned in caring for their curls? Please share your info.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 2 years ago | I found that mine took way MORE work to keep it straight. I now know why, because it was trying to curl back up. LOL! I take alot less time on my hair now, unless I blow dry it with a diffuser.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 2 years ago | Yip, that's a lot of what I learned from the book. I also learned about the harsh chemicals in shampoo and how our natural oils help to nourish the hair. So, yea, I don't wash with shampoo everyday either. There's a big No Poo movement going on. If you do a search it's very interesting: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-394226/Could-survive-shampoo.html http://www.naturalfamilyonline.com/go/index.php/389/why-you-should-go-no-poo/

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 1 year ago | Hi dfn12968! Thanks for all the curly hair tips. My daughter is a natural curly headed girl. And her hair is constantly dry and mats terribly.
I guess that I have been treating her hair the same as mine. I have long thick straight hair and hers is light and curly.
When she shampoos daily her hair frizzes and tangles at the slightest provocation.
I will try the Garnier Fructise products you mentioned.
Her hair is perpetually dry and I've been looking for a good solution that would fit curly hair.
Thanks so much for the curl tips. BeautyQueen

3. MoonlightSerenade (998) | 2 years ago | Intersting. My hair has always been straight as a stick, but now is turning curly -- well wavy underneath anyway -- after menopause. I thought it was strange and didn't know why.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 2 years ago | My sil always had blondish hair, then she found out she had liver disease, her hair went all dry and gross, breaking off and sush. After her transplant it came back nice, shiny, and reddish brown. Very pretty. LOL! I had another friend who had lovely strawberry blonde hair. She was in a auto accident, in college, had to have her head shaved so they could do surgery on her brain. Her hair came back dishwater blonde, it was NOT nice. LOL! Poor thing.

4. walijo2008 (3741) | 2 years ago | I don't have naturally curly hair but my sister does, she has beautiful curly hair and its thick, but she hates it. She's always using a flat iron to straighten it, not too long ago she went to the salon to have it chemically straightened and it wouldnt't do it, it just got curlier..ha. I asked her why you wanna do that? Alot of people pay good money to have that kind of hair, including me, I'm always getting perms. She said she knows, she hears it all the time. I don't know what she does to it, I know she uses alot of conditioner. When she was younger it used stick out everywhere, real frizzy, but as she got older she learned to take care of it, so now its not so wild.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 2 years ago | Ohhh, it sounds lovely. I am envious as I have alot of hair but it's fine. LOL! So I don't get quite the curl volume or consistancy I would love to have. But oh well. Give her that info, maybe it will help her too. I was suprised at how many people thought that their hair was always stick straight until they tried some of these tips. Some ended up with good curl, some with just natural wave. It's interesting. I posted some other links up in a previous reponse, as well.

5. ersmommy1 (10496) | 1 year ago | I have naturally curly hair as well. Been that way my whole life. I have one trick that I use regularly. Take a tiny bit of conditioner and while your hair is still wet work it through your hair. Don't rinse it out. (That's why just a tiny bit). It keeps the frizz down and the moisture in. I also do a hot oil treatment once in a while. VO5 works great.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 1 year ago | That's an excellent idea. Have you used that LeKair Cholestrol stuff? It works well in that capacity. My mother's Dr recommeded it, my mum is 78, and her hair is drying out.

6. lilybug (15367) | 1 year ago | My daughter has dry curly hair. I have tried a few different conditioners, but they always weigh her hair down and make it look greasy. I am looking at the Mixed Chicks website right now and I see that they have products for kids. I may have to order some and check it out.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 1 year ago | I have an email friend that has biracial children and she swears by this stuff. I use the conditioner and the leave in conditioner. I NEVER brush my hair and rarely comb it and I NEVER had tangles, snarls or matts. Really no foolin!

7. Katesmama (3223) | 1 year ago | Oddly enough, Irish, my hair only curls up when I grow it out. Its natrually curly, but when its short, it just goes froma bit of frizz to straight with good volume, so I'm not complaining a bit. I have no product recommendations, but I can say that I'd prefer my hair to be on the curly side.

Irishfrndly65 (7441) | 1 year ago | Mine is better when it's a bit longer as well. When I used to go and get it cut, the lady cut it shorter one time and I had a hard time convincing her that she had cut OFF my curls. LOL!

8. lucy02 (4472) | 1 year ago | I have that book too. I started wearing my hair curly a few years ago after trying to straighten it about 20 yrs. I would blow dry it, then hot roll it...sometimes twice a day. It left my hair in really bad shape. Now I just let it air dry and most days just put conditioner of it and rinse. I use the Samy curl creme on my hair too. I am familiar with the naturallycurly.com site but not the other ones. I will check them out too. I have a hard time finding a hairdresser near me that is good with curly hair. Most of them want to straighten it.

9. KrisNY (7347) | 1 year ago | My daughter has really curly hair as well. It's thick too. We had it straightened last year and what a mess it was. We are going to the city this time to get it done. We have tried numerous products. I am going online to get that book now. I want to find something that she can use that will make her hair gorgeous and not put a lot of product in it- She wears it pulled back most of the time- otherwise it snarls!
