I don't know what to tell her... Help!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470) 4 years ago

Okay... I've been knowing this lady for some time now. She isn't so much a friend as she is an acquaintance, but I have helped her out from time to time. The other day I was helping her around the house. She really needs a wheelchair and I said something to her about having her doctor prescribe her a wheelchair. She tries to walk, but she just can't walk but a little bit and that is just to the bathroom and back using her walker.

Anyway she told me something that is perplexing to me. She said she had one, but it got broke. She said she had it for many years and her Medicare was paying the fee for it. Well from what she says the wheelchair was supposed to be hers after 5 years, and that was a good 15 years ago she said.

The thing she told me was that the company keeps dunning her for payments that the Medicare doesn't cover. She is afraid if she asks her doc for another wheelchair there will be questions about the one that is being paid for by Medicare that doesn't even exist anymore.

From what she told me the seat gave out and she couldn't use it anymore she left it out on her porch out of the way for years. She said it got rusty and she had the junk men take it away.

So there are 2 things here.. this older lady gets bills for a wheelchair that she was supposed to own after 5 years, and also her Medicare is paying on it each month.

I told her just to call or write them telling the parties (wheel chair company and Medicare) about the situation and she just shakes her head. She said she is afraid she will get into some kind of trouble now with the two different entities.

The lady really needs a wheelchair to get around. She doesn't have any children that I can talk to about this... so is there anything I can do to help her... or should I just forget it since it isn't my problem? I'm really concerned that one day she will fall and break a hip or something.

Do you think I should try to convince her to write or call the company and Medicare? Does anyone have any ideas.. has anyone ever dealt with this problem? She needs help.

I asked her to let me see the contract that she signed when she got the wheelchair. She said she didn't have it anymore after all these years. So she hasn't got a firm ground to stand on to prove her case here... what can she do? What can I do for her?

Oh poor lady.... how old is she? I don't wat to be rude but I think in cases where there's no one to take care of her its better that she be sent to a home that people could better take care of her. Well it is pretty obvious that she might someday meet the accidents that you are predicting to happen. And that would be difficult for her to help herslef wihtout any assistance from anyone.

I'm not really sure of her age, but I know she is at least up in her mid to late 70s.

If i were you,i would go to yahoo groups. Type in your county and then see what groups pop up. MOST county's have a freecycle group.wich everyone in the community that is a memeber will give there stuff away rather then throw it away. and possibly someone who is no longer using one is giving one away.or if you post wated:wheelchair.mabey someone has one just stored in the basement not using and they see your wanted post:).. you just might get lucky. you never know...

Goodluck with this. i do feel sorry for this lady:(

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  4 years ago

Thanks Wifey, the freecycle is a good idea to start I think.. and also like you said posting wheelchair wanted... that would be a great idea.

You think she is much better in a home for the aged than with her condition being alone in that house seeking help from whoever is there to help. while moving her to a home might give her a much more comfortable life and plenty of people to assist her.

man that is a stinky situation
not surprising though we are talking about medicare LOL
All you can do is keep urging her to call both medicare and the wheelchair company
My mom has had similar problems with medicare and i know they can be tough but your friend will just have to stay on them.

minus me please, thanks

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  4 years ago

Thanks Zu.. I wonder if her fears are justified? She says the Medicare is paying for this nonexistant wheelchair and the company is dunning her for it too... but without the papers she can't prove she doesn't owe for the chair. It is sticky. I'll keep talking to her about this. I gave you a (-) per your request zu. Thanks!

To help her, is there a way you could speak to both the companies involved and pose them the question in anonymity without giving your friends name. If you get some reply you would be able to solve the problem for her.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  4 years ago

Maybe so. I'll talk to her about it.

I would try a little bit more to try to convince her to write the two companies. She really has nothing to lose since they are billing her anyway. She needs to explain to them about it and see if she can get another one. She really doesn't have any evidence of it. I do agree. I know there are some places that will let her get one even if medicare doesn't cover the charges. I think I seen something like that on the television. Sorry I could not be of more help.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  4 years ago

Thanks Steph.. that might be of help. Maybe I could ask her to write them .. maybe she give me the permission to write for her.

If she is afraid to do it then she can use a computer chair which is easier to manuever. When I had a sprain, we did not buy a wheel chair and I just used my computer chair. I really enjoyed using it to bring me from this point to that point.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  4 years ago

I never thought of that. She doesn't have a computer, so I never noticed if she had a chair or not. It's still something to think about though as an option.

Okay here is the thing. They are defrauding Medicare. She will not get into trouble, she isn't the one billing Medicare for something that was paid off 10years ago! It does not matter that she no longer has the contract the medical supply place will have to cough it up. Explain to her that Medicare takes a dim view of medical supply places over charging for appliances and especially an appliance that was paid in full years ago. Medicare will not look to her for this thievery they will look to the company that is defrauding them. She needs to actually get another w/c from a different supply place and send a note to Medicare about the problem. If they are doing this to her they are probably doing it to others. Also the medical supply company owes her any monies that she paid out over the last 10years. In addition to what they owe Medicare.
Even though this isn't your problem maybe you could call the w/c company and speak to them, if you can't get satisfaction from them call the fraud line at Medicare.
This type of behavior from a medical supply company is unacceptable and not to be tolerated! Geriatrics have enough trouble making ends meet on a fixed income with out the very companies that is supposed to provide services robbing them blind! Hopefully they are not crooks just sloppy bookkeepers (okay, i don't believe that) and will make things right once it is brought to their attention.
Which they may actually give her a new w/c to replace the old one just to keep Medicare out of it, because once Medicare gets into it they are going to have all kinds of fines to pay!

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  4 years ago

Thanks for this advice CJgrooms... I never even thought about them defrauding her and the Medicare. I'm going to do a little house work for her in a day or two.. I will talk to her then. Thanks!

myLot reputation of 97/100. cjgrooms (3235)   ranked 309 out of 32,950 in life  4 years ago

Please let me know what happens. Even if she gets a w/c from another source she and Medicare should be reimbursed for the money that they have been robbed of.

If you have the time maybe you could do some calling around and find out. You wouldn't have to give any names or personal info. Hopefully she can get the chair she needs.
