Stepping down from Microsoft was a work of genius. I think allot of businessmen often end up doing allot of damage to themselves because they usually fail to quit while they are ahead.
By officially retiring from Microsoft, Bill Gates is ensuring that he quits while he is ahead. No matter what happens to Microsoft from here will not be his issue, because he has officially retired from the company. People will remember Bill Gates as the man who founded the company and brought it to a high point. Like Rockerfeller before him, Gates has understood that after a certain point, highly wealthy business people need to concentrate on philanthropy in order to secure the legacies.
You could call it an unwritten rule of the capitalist system, where you are allowed to succeed and make as much money as you can. However, in order to ensure that the system does not collapse, you should give back to society in the form of philanthropy.
It's rightly pointed out that he's left himself enough room to make a comeback at Microsoft and he can keep himself occupied with consultancy work for the company. However, I think he's going to have his work cut out for him at his foundation.
