Choose Your Own Dirge!  email this discussion to a friend?

Choosing one's own Funeral Song seems to be the fashionable thing to do at the moment. I have decided I would like them to play 'Morning has Broken'. It MUST be the Cat Stevens version though. I heartily dislike that one which is a duet. If they play that version I will rise from my coffin and cause an unpleasant scene! Anyway, what I would really enjoy, is to know the special song you would choose for your own Big Day of Final Rest.

I would choose Hell Yeah by Neil Diamond:)
So if they ask you when I'm gone
Was it everything he wanted?
When he had to travel on
Did he know he'd be missed?
You can tell them this
Hell yeah he did
He saw it all
He walked the line
Never had to crawl
He cried a bit
But not for long
Hell yeah he found the life that he was after
Filled it up with love and laughter
Finally got it right and made it fit
Hell yeah he did

Oh yes! Good one! Appropriate words too. I used to love Neil Diamond. Still going strong too at 67 I believe.

My father requested 'Great Balls of Fire' by Jerry Lee Lewis at his cremation. The rest of the family is racing each other to see who can use 'Disco Inferno' first.

No, really. ;)

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

That is hilarious Wolfechu! Your father must have had a great sense of humour.

myLot reputation of 77/100. Wolfechu (891)  4 years ago

Yeah, it was pretty typical of him. Raised a few smiles at the funeral, which makes a nice change ;)

What a great discussion, Nonny! My brother-in-law had Stairway to Heaven played at his recent funeral service ... it was very moving and appropriate. I would like Midnight Smoke from The Hunting of the Snark.

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

Stairway to Heaven would make you cry. Midnight Smoke is absolutely beautiful. I had forgotten about The Hunting of the Snark. Lovely music in that.

myLot reputation of 84/100. guybrush (3475)  4 years ago

I just had to listen to it again. Pity I've only got it on a creaky old cassette ... and I often look in the CD shops, but I doubt I'll ever get it again. I'd love to be able to put it on my iPod. Brilliant.

sugarbunny (42)  4 years ago

Have you looked on i-tunes Guybrush?

myLot reputation of 84/100. guybrush (3475)  4 years ago

I haven't yet, sugarbunny - that's an excellent idea! I did look on YouTube, and there were a few songs from Hunting of the Snark - but not Midnight Smoke. I'll definitely check iTunes - thanks!

sugarbunny (42)  4 years ago

No problems. I just thought if they don't have it, no place would. I've found some really obscure music on there when i've been bored and just surfing through the songs. I find it convenient because you can listen before downloading so i can identify if the song is the real thing or not. Good luck, i hope you find it.

I want Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I would also like Carolina in my Mind by James Taylor to be played. There are other songs that I would like played. I pretty much want a lot of music at a memorial service rather than having a formal funeral.

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

That sounds a nice idea to have a lot of music. I know the James Taylor, but I haven't heard Tuesday's Gone. I shall now go and look that one up.

Easy choice, Nonny. My kids already know that I want Cold Chisel's version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

Yes! Good one Piscesmoon. I hope you don't have to knock too hard though.

6. myLot reputation of 98/100. caramello (2171)   4 years ago

Well Nonny I have two songs that I have requested when my days are up and they are trying to dispose of me! (Not an easy task as I always like the last word!) But both my songs are from the group Dragon....the start one will be "April Sun In Cuba" and will be bobbing away to it! Then the finale will be "Celebration" as I will visualise my hubby and two childrens' grins on their faces as they know this is me!

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

'Celebration' is the perfect choice. Somehow caramello, I don't think anyone would be grinning. It's a sad sort of subject, but at least we get to know the sort of music people like.

My mother wants "Its Raining Men" -- she also wants us to serve chocolate cake and cosmopolitans. For myself, I'd like Cirque du Soliel's Alegria.

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

I don't know that song Ishtara, but that's the very last thing I'd want. No chance of a bit of peace at all. The chocolate cake and cosmopolitans are great though. Do you mean Alegria. the complete production? That will cost a bit I'd say.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Ishtara (468)  4 years ago

No, just the main piece of music from the production, as it was what played at my wedding.

Mine would be my signature song....."My Way" written by Paul Anka and sung by Frank Sinatra. I says everything about the way I lived my life.

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

I think a lot of people might choose that one whiteheather. I remember way back seeing a list of suggestions for just such an occasion and that one was right near the top.

Hi Nonnymouse, Good choice of song. I think I would let my daughters decide for me as I really can't think of any one particular song. I do love 'Even Angels Fall' by Jewel featuring Sarah Mcloughlin, or With or Without You U2 but I don't know how apt for a funeral. They will decide well for me though I am sure of that one. Ellie :D

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

That's fine ellie if your daughters know what you like best. I decided to choose my own in case someone in the family with a quaint sense of humour decided rap was appropriate, or perhaps Country music. I thoroughly dislike Country music. I have never heard 'Even Angels Fall'.

myLot reputation of 84/100. guybrush (3475)  4 years ago

Yes ... it would be awful if someone chose, say, a Kasey Chambers number. Sung by Shane Warne and Kylie. Bit of a bummer, really ...

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

I would most certainly have to break out of my coffin and lodge a complaint.

This is one great idea - to choose your own funeral song. Mine would be Ronan Keating's 'When you say nothing at all'. After all, I won't be saying anything at that time.

myLot reputation of 73/100. Nonnymouse (405)  4 years ago

That could be seen as a most suitable choice. Silence is golden.
