Which Pop artist could best define the culture of the 80's to you?  email this discussion to a friend?

To me there were so many new artist introduced to the scene just in the "pop" category its hard to decide, but when I do think of 80's music, I would have to say Michael Jackson. He was the only artist that kept his music in the top-ten for the entire decade. Michael influenced fashion trends with the leather outfit he wore in the "Thriller" and "Billie Jean" videos, he had most of the music artist and public wearing "Jeri Curls" (I even saw Asians with Jeri Curls), he taught the world how to dance and he was loved by almost every race and culture. I swore for a while in 1984 and 1985 I saw people in the clubs wearing a single glove with rhinestones embedded in it. Unfortunately his fame went to his head and he ended up doing some questionable things. Be that as it may, out of all the great artist I listened to on the radio or on 'cassette tapes' (kids, ask your mommy about those) it seem like Michael Jackson was on. In fact, when I listen to Paul McCartney, Michael was singing too, when I would even listen to Twisted Sister, I can swear I heard Michael in the background. Who do you think was the defining 80's pop artist?

Although Michael was the biggest star of the 80s by miles, I was never a big fan. There are so many artists that made one hit wonders and I think they all have their place. The 80s were actually a wonderful time for music. How many music eras still are played with the popularity of the 80s? Not many.

One of the local radio stations pulled back on playing so many songs from the 80's, even pulling the Totally 80's Lunch Hour and turning it into Retro Lunch Hour. And by retro they mean one or two songs from the 80's, a lot from the 90's that no one cared about then, and some that came out only seven years ago. To me, a song is not considered retro if it came out this decade.

I haven't listened as much anymore but when I do, I've noticed they're starting to bring back more of the 80's again. I think they've realized their mistake!

Most of the music today just doesn't appeal to me as much as the 80's did.

I have to agree with the other mylotter and say a lot of people had their place in the 80's. But if I have to throw someone out there, I'm going to say Madonna. Girls dressed like her (me included) and wanted to be her. Probably some guys as well. But like Michael, fame went to her head and she got weird for a bit there. Now she has settled down over the last few years. Although I like a few of her newer songs, I think she was at her best in the 80's.

The 80's left us with a nostalgic and unique ways for us to remember the artist back then. Certainly we remember the controversial Culture Club. That really a break through in the 80's. Duran Duran has taken the world by storm in their appearance and songs. Not to mention the legendary Michael Jackson that got the whole world attention. The poppy sounds of Bananarama, Wham, Tears For Fears brings new sound the new wave movement back then. Also not forgetting the metal Hair band that roses like mushroom through the 80's like Bon Jovi, Gun N Roses, Twisted Sister and many more. Surely the 80's is the glamorous and fun decade to listen to music.
