Active Duty, Retired, Military Dependents - let's start communicating | | OK, I know there are a lot of active duty, retired - or military dependents here at myLot. I think we should start communicating with each other as we have so many things in common and we can ask questions about any aspects of military life....and civilian life.
Let me introduce myself first. My name is Rafael, I am a retired US Navy Chief. I put in 27 years and 2 months of active duty from Dec. 1964 to February 1992. WOW! that is a long time isn't it? Yes, yes, yes, that is 27 years and 2 months of active duty.
Well, I know - now you are saying - I wasn't even born and he was already in the Navy - He must be old!! Yes, I am old - but I am still alive and I know I have about 10, 15, or 20 more years to go.
Here is some of the things I did when I was in the Navy - My first 6 years I was a Steward - that is I am a cook and server in the Officers wardroom and statesroom. I was aboard the Navy Destroyer USS McKean DD-784 homeported in Long Beach California.
After 6 years - I was able to change my job to Disbursing Clerk. That is the people who handles paying the servicemembers their salaries. During those years we compute their earnings manually - we were not yet computerized. I volunteered and went to Vietnam - spent 3 months in Danang, and 9 months in Nha Be - close to Saigon.
While in Vietnam - I was in the mobile Pay Team and I rode the helicopters, river boats, trucks and any other kind of transportation to get to the troops out in the fields. We pay them with MPC (Military Payment Certificates) not US Dollars.
After my in country tour of Vietnam from 1970-1971 I volunteered to go to Taiwan and I was in Taiwan from 1971 to 1975. I then went shore duty in NAS Lemoore California for 2 years, then went to NAF Sigonella, Italy. Then to Fleet Training Center Mayport, Florida as an instructor.
Then back West to USS Midway CV-41 an aircraft carrier, then to Naval Fuel Depot Tsurumi Japan - and finally to USS DULUTH LPD-6 (amphibious assault ship) until my retirement in Feb. 1992 -- there you go 27 years and 2 months.
OK, that is a little bit about me. I will add on more information about me some other time.
Come on folks, Air Force, Army, Coast Guards, Marines, Navy, National Guards, military dependents - let's start this discussion thread.
I started one discussion like this last year and nobody even responded. Don't be ashamed...come on out and let's get to communicating!

USNavyChief (179) | 1 year ago | Hello Shipmate Charlie! 39A radar tech - WOW that must be a job that gave you experience for good high paying civilian work.
I retired as an Aviation Boatswainsmate (Fuel) working on the flight decks of the Aircraft Carrier and the Amphibious Assault Ship and working on Naval Fuel Depot. Also, I become a Navy Instructor Teaching Damage Control.
When I retired I did not get a job where I was trained to do as an Aviation Boatswainsmate and Fuel specialist.
I just did management jobs such as Restaurant Manager and Assistant Executive Steward where I managed 300 plus employees. So my Navy experience in managing people help me with managing civilians.

| | 2. GardenGerty (20193) | 1 year ago | First hubby (now deceased) was Navy. San Diego, USS AJAX. Al repair ship. He was a Machinist's Mate. That was in 71-75. I loved the San Diego area, as a place to visit. I would not have wanted to stay there. Second hubby had two enlistments in the army. He was infantry. He tried civilian life for awhile, then tried to re up, but they said his hearing was too bad. It was the shooting that did it, but he could not prove it. Your time in Nam sounds very exciting. Last year you were not on my friend's list, or I would have responded. Hope you get lots more.

USNavyChief (179) | 1 year ago | Hey, hey, hey, so you have a lot of experience being in military bases. Did you ever stayed in a military housing? USS AJAX - I know that ship and had spent some time tied up next to her as we are getting something repaired before a WestCoast Deployment tour.
OK, GardenGerty, thanks for responding to this thread. Let's keep it alive and interesting. I think because we all have some common experiences that we can relate to each other better.
I'll be very glad if you add me as one of your friends.

GardenGerty (20193) | 1 year ago | You are on my friend list, that is how I got the discussion. We never lived on military housing. We had apartments and a trailer at different times in Imperial Beach, across from the helicopter base, sort of. I did spend a little time in Balboa toward the end of his enlistment.

USNavyChief (179) | 1 year ago | Airborne - that is an elite group. So you have been In Germany, Panama, Korea. He also did over 27 years of active duty like me. Did you guys experienced waiting to get into military housing on the bases where you where stationed. I know why your husband stayed in for so long. It is because of being in charge. As I can tell - your husband is in the higher ranks or even an officer - or he might not be able/allowed to stay in the service.
When he was in the service he was in position of authority and being in charge. It is very challenging and satisfactory knowing that whatever needs to be done - he can get them done by giving orders and instructions.
So your Dad was in the Army and your Uncle was in the Air Force - Wow you are a regular military brat. Lots of experience.

CatsandDogs (5107) | 1 year ago | I haven't been to any of those places, HE has. His first wife went to Germany with him and used him for all he was worth. She married him to change her name because of crediters were after her and then used her son from her first marriage against him to get back to the states to be the tramp that she was. Anyway enough of that subject... bla!! LOL We didn't live in any military housing because it was much cheaper to live off post and we bought a house every where we went and sold the old one as we went. The reason he stayed in so long is because it was basically all he's ever known. He did build bridges and such but gosh, that's hard hard work and he couldn't do that kind of thing anymore. He retired as an E-8, so yes he was a little up there considering E-9 is the highest rank in the enlisted but we didn't show it off for we're normal down to earth type of people. My dad was in the service and was just getting out when he married my mom so being the last child, I wasn't a part of it at all but my uncle I was a part of when I went to see him and my cousins. It was really interesting as a kid to say the least.

| | 4. Polly1 (8462) | 1 year ago | My hubby was Army for a couple of years. He was mostly stationed in Korea. He also was in Japan, and other places. His time in the service was between declared war dates, (even though there was shooting going on). Since his service dates where not during declared war times, him and I both have lost out on some benefits. I can say that he had gotten in the VA Health care system. They were terrific, I recommend to any military person to get in the health care system while they can. We have a friend that was in Nam, sadly he ended up a POW for a long time and was tortured and maimed. He was also wounded several times, they patched him up and sent him back out. He has been trying to get a service related disability for a long time, they keep denying him. They say too many years have passed. He also has some effects from Agent Orange. He has been given the run around. He does get good medical care from the VA, I will say that. I have an Uncle that is a retired Navy SeaBee, he was stationed out of Oxnard, CA. amoung other places. He lives close to the base. I was out last year visiting with him and we went on base many times. This is it for my rambling.

| | 5. Piscesmoon (2884) | 1 year ago | I haven't been in the services but I am an Army brat. My father served 20 years with the Australian Army and had active service in Korea and Vietnam. He was Signals Corps. He was quite damaged after serving in Vietnam and is an alcoholic as a result. I have always wanted to know more about his army service but it is something he never wants to discuss except with other military personnel. The troops were treated very badly by the public who didn't want them going to Vietnam and Dad is still quite bitter about it. I was incredulous when he said that, to go to Vietnam, the soldiers were made to wear civilian clothing and caught regular Qantas planes in order to avoid protests and being spat on. They were treated no better when they returned. From the very little that Dad has told me, it is no wonder so many men suffered psychologically when they were doing their duty and were despised by the public for it.

| | 6. Ldyjarhead (5170) | 1 year ago | I enlisted in the Marine Corps straight out of High School in 1975, right after my 18th birthday. I served for more than 21 years, retiring as a MSgt (E8) in Jan 1997.
I completed Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC (the only place that women train), then served at Camp Lejeune, NC; Parris Island, SC; Iwakuni, Japan; South Weymouth, MA; Camp Lejeune again; Camp Smith, HI; NAS Patuxent River, MD. I also had the opportunity for short trips to Camp Pendleton, CA; Yuma, AZ; London; and Seoul, Korea.
I started out in Admin working on the General Staff until my second tour at Camp Lejeune where I worked in G-3 Plans and G-5, working with Operations and Plans, and got in on the ground floor of the classified computer systems that figured out how many beans, bullets and bandaids we needed to have stored and/or at the ready for any possible contingency in the world.
That system was used for the very first time in real-time right after I got to Hawaii and we readied for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. It was a very dynamic and stressful period, but we proved the system worked and I was extremely proud to have been instrumental in proving it.
It's been 11 years since I retired, and I still miss it - every day.
My son also served, and although he could have had any specialty he wanted, he chose Infantry and served three tours in Iraq, starting out as a young PFC (E2) and leaving as a Sgt (E5) Squad Leader.
