being raised religiously |
|
for those that were raised in a family that were religious (any religion) do you sometimes wish that you had been raised with out either that religion or no religion at all? i was raised in a strict religious household and i wish i hadnt had that part in my life since it really impacted me negatively and my relationships with my family.. i know a lot of people have been disowned by their families because of difference in religion but to me you should care about the person not their beliefs and raise your kids to be people and for them to learn and follow what they feel is right whether or not you think its correct.. anyone have an opinion on this?

overwings (1500) | 4 months ago | No matter what education you got, religious or not you still say "Oh my god!" like a blind person says "let's see" I couldn't choose for instance being baptised or not, but I decided to being confirmed. My childrem will be able to choose more than I did but anyway I want them to learn a bit about religion in order to understand this world and make a better choice.

2. salonga (2454) | 4 months ago | I have my own family, I being the mother. I will not and will never say that mine is a religious kind of family but rather a Christian family. Our Christian life is not bounded by religion because religion will not save us but rather it is our relationship with the Savior, the Christ himself. Hence I could safely declare that we are not religious but we love the Lord in the truest sense of the world. However we belong to a religious denomination that is Christ centered and from this Church we learned the truth that set us free from the traditions of the olden years. We do go to church to worship regularly and we do read the Bible and from there get correct instructions from God. I raised my child in the right way from the very beginning in a godly manner and now he has great reverence and fear of God and this fear of God led him to understand the right and wrong. No strong discipline but rather lots of guidance and gentle nurturing coupled with lots of prayers. Result a happy and contented Christian family.

3. indianpedi (1163) | 4 months ago | You are very right. I was lukcy in that respect. I was brought up in a fairly liberal Hindu family in India. Hinduism is sometimes a very liberal religion, because it depends upon how you look at it, as it has many facets and all are accepted as being 'normal'. In fact, one can even be an 'atheist Hindu' by applying the logic of Vedic Philosophy, upon which Hinduism is based. Because of this, I am able to related freely and without any bias, with people from other religions. To a Hindu, any form of worship is WORSHIP, and so, to be honoured. There ARE fundamentalist Hindus too, I admit, at the other end of the spectrum. And ofcourse, there is our horrible, horrible Caste system, which treats some people as 'low-born' Untouchables. We are in the process of cleansing ourselves collectively of this Caste mindset. That apart, because of my upbringing, my list of 'intimate' friends Catholic, Muslim and Buddhist names, too. In fact, they are closer to me than many of my co-religionist friends!

5. overwings (1500) | 4 months ago | It should be a matter of particular choice. I think studying religion at school, in a soft way helps to understand society and learning what is considered to be right and wrong. I studied in religious schools but I never felt any pressure at all and in my family nobody goes to church for many many years, so I can call myself agnostic. Even if it's only to understand art when you enter in a church it helps knowing the story.

6. pheonixstar1982 (820) | 4 months ago | If and when i ever have a family, they will be raised with the freedom of religion. The only thing that i will teach them, and its in most religions anyways, is that there is a high power and that our actions have equal or greater reactions.

7. lightningd (730) | 4 months ago | I was raised and babtized Lutheran ALC. That said, my family did not push religion on me. I was also allowed to attend church with friends of other religions. My parents basically allowed me to decide for myself. I do not attend church regularly as an adult, but I do believe in God. I have not forced my children to attend church. One thing that sticks out in my mind from reading the Bible is where God says "Do not build a temple to worship me". I take that to mean that all the money spent on these fancy churches is nothing more than a status symbol. I do believe that God wants us to share his word, and live a good life. That said, I believe that I do not have to attend a church to be a good christian. I feel that if I want to talk to God, I can do it no matter where I am. One group I have found that I can relate to is the Cowboys for Christ Ministries. Their services aren't held in a specific church. They are held in fair barns, in the bleachers at a rodeo before a performance, or around a campfire. What's really interesting about their services is that the Cowboy Bible gives translation that puts it in the context of right here right now. How it relates to me. How I can learn from this. Now as for judging a person by their religion, I don't think that is right. Everyone has the right to worship in whatever manner they choose. It's in the Bill of Rights. It's called Freedom of Religion. I will say that I would not encourage my children to consider marrying someone who's religious beliefs require them to convert to their religion. I think that is just wrong.

9. shlooper (284) | 4 months ago | I grew up in a very strict religious household. Now, I want to leave that particular religion, but I am terrified of telling my parents that I do not believe it. This is because they DID practically disown my sister when she told them she didn't believe it. I think that it is wrong for parents to pressure children this way. I agree with the other comments that it is best to let them design their own beliefs because I feel that this religious battle will defiantly harm relationships within my family before it is over.

The reason that I think that people think that religion is wrong and brainwashes people because they have demons that they need to get rid off.
