New Yorker vs. Good Taste email this discussion to a friend?

Fox News just broadcast a segment reporting on the cover of the upcoming New Yorker magazine.

The cover features caricatures of Michelle and Barack Obama “fist-butting” and Michelle has a rifle flung over her shoulder. Obama is dressed as a Muslim, complete with turban and a fireplace is shown with the American flag burning in it. Above the mantle is a picture of Osama bin Laden.

It’s no big secret that I’m not an Obama fan, but I think this goes a bit too far over the top. Satire or sensationalism … what do you think?

Would you buy the magazine?

It just goes along with everything else we have been discussing, lately, rj. Don't you agree that lack of respect plays as big a part in all our problems as apathy? I, recently, listened to some campaign commercials and such from the 1940's. They were SO vastly different. Not to say that there was not some mild 'mud slinging' back then, as well, but the respect levels were so different from today.

When one has so little respect for ourselves, then it's hard to respect others. I am not talking about pride and ego, I am talking about simple respect for our fellow human beings. Do unto others, would be a good thing for them to think on right about now. I think what they are doing is tasteless even if one is not an Obama fan, don't you? If it were the truth, just report it in a factula truthful manner, if not then don't 'report' it at all!

And don't forget how the media was mentioned in that film as well!

Yes, it completely lacks in good taste. The only purpose I can see is to perpetuate the negative aspects that have been reported about the Obamas, and, of course, to sell the magazine.

Again, clearly I am not an Obama fan ... but I find this uncalled for and absolutely tasteless!

First of all, The New Yorker is not one of my favorite magazines. However, it was meant to be satire. Evidently, they meant it to be aimed at the people who actually believe all these things about the Obamas. I question whether the people who do believe these things even read The New Yorker? lol

What I think is outrageous about it is that there is no cover story to explain it. I was sort of listening to an interview this morning (so I can't tell you if it was on CNN or MSNBC), but the interviewer pointed out to the NY rep that if it's satire and you have to explain it, it's not done very well. Good point.

I'm sure they will be apologizing sooner or later.

And the publishers should apologize. There's funny then there's beyond funny ... not satire, but just plain muck.

If they wanted to provide a satirical cover, I think the "fist-bump" (or butt or whatever) would have been sufficient.
