I honestly did not know this, did you? |

Ok my 8 yr old son, had his yearly physical today. He is 4 feet 2 inches tall, and weighs 70 pounds. He is a strapping young boy, right. Now to put this in perspective, I am 5 feet tall. The pediatrician informed me, that the National Pediatric Association, or whatever they are called, are recommending, and pushing for lawmakers to change the laws so that all children must sit in a booster seat until they are 4 feet 9 inches tall. I didnt mean to, but I laughed at her when she said it. My youngest child is dainty and petit, she will be sitting in one until she is 21. She said it isnt a law yet, but they are now recommending it. I was just stunned. I mean how many 8 yr old children, or older are going to want to sit in a booster seat.

1. lilaclady (19770) | 1 year ago | Hmmm I think I would have laughed to, I can'r see kids being happy about it unless there would be specially designed type of things made for this, what is the reasoning for it, is it considered safer than seat belts or is just more money for parents to have to spend...

2. cobrateacher (4277) | 1 year ago | I knew about it, and in some states it is aslready a law. I just can't imagine how to get them into the booster seats. I know a woman in her 70s who would have to be in a booster seat. I wonder if Dr. Ruth has one? Some rules or laws are just not enforceable! It's for safety, but we already have enough arguments with our kids!

mommyboo (3446) | 1 year ago | Even for safety you have to weigh the pros and cons. I don't think it is worth getting THIS up in arms about it, think of just a few generations ago when WE were not in carseats lol. My MIL thought I was wasting money when I bought a convertible seat for my daughter when she reached the weight and height limits of her infant seat. She was about 27 or 28 inches tall, and 22 lbs, and the woman thought my tiny 14 month old daughter could sit in the car without a seat?! On the other hand, I am not going to be arguing with a 2nd grader about sitting in a carseat either. If it's not a law, I won't be doing it and if it becomes one, I will be annoyed.

3. suspenseful (17152) | 1 year ago | I cannot see a short adult sitting on a booster seat. And if the children under four feet nine need a booster seat, then adults would have to use them while driving. So better idea - making seats that can be raised. Have a hydraulic lift under the seat that can be operated by a lever sort of like the one that makes your seat go back if you have extra long legs. It might just work.

mjhicks (297) | 1 year ago | You are on the right track about adjustable seats but not just ones that raise up... If auto makers can create seats that can be folded down into floor compartments or taken out and rearranged, why can't they make seats that are changeable and adaptable to meet the needs of growing families. Still have infant and toddler seats you strap in but once a child graduates to what is now the booster seat stage instead of having to go out and buy a booster, require the passenger seats in certain classes of automobiles made to be easily modified in hight, width and type of restraint system. Some manufacturers already have seats that convert to a toddler seat so why not have a greater range of adaptations that not only could be used to safely transport children but also be adjusted for the comfort as well as safety of all passengers. Little Johnny could ride to kindergarten safely, and grandma Daisy can ride in comfort without having to bring along extra cushions. Make these adjustable seats standard in certain classes and an option in a few other classes.

melissaruth1 (3528) | 1 year ago | Very good point, but then where would all that booster seat income go. I just cant imagine, that many parents would be able to enforce this. My son would do it if I made him, but he wouldnt be happy about it.

mommyboo (3446) | 1 year ago | I am short too but I have no issues driving the same car my 6' tall husband drives. We simply adjust the seat and the tilt of the steering wheel. I drive this car more often than he does but it's a midsize sedan, not a compact by any means. That said, I would NEVER sit in a booster, what a joke. I agree with requirements that are worded this way - x height and weight OR x age. As long as the age is not excessive ie more than 6 or 7, then the rest of it won't really matter. I wouldn't have hit the weight limit of 80 until I was in high school and sorry but THAT would be excessive. Age 6 or 7, 50 or 60 lbs... maybe 4'2 would be enforceable. There are too many kids who would never hit the weight limit and kids 8 or older are not going to take kindly to riding in a 'carseat' again.

4. Rose7179 (152) | 1 year ago | I have heard something about this. I think here it is that they have to be 8 yrs or 80lbs. I think the 4'9" thing is funny because my mom is only 4'9". and she is 51yrs lol.

5. lilybug (15438) | 1 year ago | Here it is 8 years old or 80 pounds, but I had heard that they were going to go to the 4 foot 9 inch thing. It is ridiculous. My son was out of a booster seat for 2 year and then they changed the law to 8 years old or 80 pounds and I had to go out and buy him a new booster seat. If they change it again I am going to have to get his back out. He is only 4 foot6.

|
melissaruth1 (3528) | 1 year ago | 80 pounds sounds reasonable, but again what if you have a petit child. I think just making a general law is absurd. Maybe it should just be age 8-10 or something and never mind the whole height or weight thing.

6. desertdarlene (5847) | 1 year ago | Wow, that would mean that a lot of people would be sitting in a booster seat their entire lives. When I was a kid, we didn't ride in any seat, but the bed of a station wagon. I'm not saying that's right, but a lot of kids did that. I'm all for safety, but maybe they should think about making changes in the cars of the future. I can't imagine a teenager sitting in a booster seat no way, no how.

melissaruth1 (3528) | 1 year ago | We sat in the back of my mothers station wagon too. While that is not safe, back then it wasnt a big deal. My mother did make us wear seatbelts even before it was a law, but making this booster thing a law seems a bit intrusive to me.

| 7. marylynn (86) | 1 year ago | My daughter was a premie and has never caught up to her age group in weight. She is 7 years old and still weighs just 33 pounds. She obviously still uses a booster seat. I think they are getting obsessive with the height, like you were saying some short 18 year olds will still be in booster seats to meet that measure. lol

8. Hatley (22169) | 1 year ago | hi melissaruth1 that sounds like another one of those stupid laws made by people who know nothing about children and their growth patterns so I hope the law is not made as its asinine and stupid too.

melissaruth1 (3528) | 1 year ago | It isnt law here in florida yet, but they will probably pass it. They seem to like the stupid and ridiculous. You know what amazes me, states think is a great idea, namely florida, to have legalized fire works, and make it legal to carry your gun to work. Dont see anything wrong with that, but making a child that is obviously too old for one sit in a booster seat is a good idea. Stupid is right.

9. foxyfire33 (5796) | 1 year ago | In that case my 12 year old would have just gotten out of a booster event hough she's well over the weight limit and my 10 year old would still be in one. He's a "stapping young boy" too, just not tall yet. My almost 8 year old is petite and no where near the requirements as it is.
I understand the safety factor since regular seatbelts aren't designed for smaller people but I think car manufacturers need to fix that not lawmakers by forcing us to stuff our kids in boosters for the majority of their childhoods.

10. Adoniah (2675) | 1 year ago | I know several adult women who would by law have to sit in booster seats if that law went into affect. Who makes these laws anyway? There are a lot of adults that are under 5' in height. Are they going to make these folks sit in booster seats?
As of now, dwarfs etc. are not required to sit in any special kind of seat, but will this new law change that? I think that they will create quite an uproar if this includes them.
