This is why I am against arranged marriages

># Story Highlights
# Ex-child bride says, "I didn't want to sleep with him, but he forced me to"
# Yemeni girl, 10, say she was forced to marry man three times her age
# Now divorced, Nujood Ali is one of the few children to speak out against practice
# International aid group: More than half of all Yemeni girls are married off before 18<

I’m from a culture where arranged marriages are not a custom and this is one reason why I am so very much against arranged marriages,

Imagine marrying your 10 year old daughter who does not want to get married, wants to stay at home with mom and dad and her siblings, but she was forced to and forced to go live with him in, and when she didn’t want to consumate the marriage and have ‘relations’ with her husband he forced her, and beat her,

I’m sorry but this is wrong

And what I feel is worse is that she is getting chastised by some for speaking out against her marriage

She’s 10 years old, I’m sorry a 10 year old does not need to marry a man that is 3 times her age, and one that she does not like and can not learn to love.

The marriage was supposed to turn her over to the care of hi parents, he was not supposed to sleep with her, but he did and he beat her into submission,

The determination of a 10 year old,

I applaud her for standing up for herself
> But what is most unusual is that this young girl took such an intensely private dispute and went public with it.

Nujood said she made up her mind to escape from her husband, describing how on a visit to her parents' home she broke free and traveled to the central courthouse across town and demanded to speak to a judge.

"He asked me, 'What do you want?' And I said, 'I want a divorce.' And he said, 'You're married?' And I said, 'Yes,'" she recalled.

What unfolded in those few days in April gripped the country on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

Nujood got her divorce, but based on the principles of Islamic Sharia law, her husband was compensated, not prosecuted. Nujood was ordered to pay him more than $200. The human rights lawyer who represented her donated the money.

But for this determined spirit, it was still a sweet victory. <

I thank the lawyer for donating the money to get the divorce, I think what should have happened is that he should have been prosecuted, not compensated, that is wrong

The father of the child is mad that he broke his promise not to sleep with her until she was 20,

The sad thing to say is that in Yemen this is not unusual for child brides, which the law changed a decade ago to allow children younger than 15 to be wed.

I’m sorry but I view that child weddings and arranged marriages like this opening the doors for sexual predators, no matter what country you live in, its digusting, and I think this country should take action to stop it.

I spoke of an early post about children as young as 1 year old being married, and people trying to model their life after the prophet Muhemmed, and I find this just as disgusting, parents need to realize that arranged marriages are not working, and cultures need to realize that this needs to stop, and child brides need to have a say in when they get married.

This is just my thoughts,
I think the parents should have done more to help their daughter and the fact the father was just upset is not very heartwarming, if this was my daughter, first of all she would not be getting married like this and if I heard she got married at any age and this happened I wouldn’t be happy, these are our kids and no matter the age they want to know they can count on their parents.

I think a child should be able to think about marriage around the age of 16, but I think even then they should be counseled about it at that age

WOW! This is crazy. That little girl seems very mature for her age. But why did they marry her off if he was not supposed to touch her until she was 20 he had to wait 10 years? Why didnt wait 10 years to marry her? The other sad part is that the husband was compensated, but don't think I wouldn't have cared I would have given him 200 to get rid of him.

this is madness! i am against arranged marriage as well..how could you marry someone you didn't even know, didn't even love and worst your just a 10 year old girl thats supposed to be playing outside with the same age of children..this tradition is disgusting! i am sorry for those who has the same tradition but i guess this is really humiliating now..their removing the rights of this children to choose..to do what their age are supposed to be doing..how can a 10 year old play a role of a wife when she didn't even have the idea of it...i am so glad that this girl had spoken her side about this arranged marriage...at least one of those thousands had courage to speak up..

It is definitely a cultural thing. I am not in favor of arranged marriages, but to have one to a 10 year is sick and wrong. I love the internet, but it makes me ill with what I am exposed to, things like this are very disturbing.

That child should get out Yemen and start a life with a family who can love and appreciate her for being 10.

That is absolutely terrible!!! I also, can't believe that this person was actually compensaed for his poor behaviour. Muslims wanted some form of Sharia law here, but our goernment shot the idea down saying that if they want to live in Canada, IF ANYONE WANTS TO LIVE IN CANADA they need to obey Canadian laws.

This is very sad, the way some people treat their children, the parent that let this happen should be put in jail, I would not let no man, marry my daughter at the age of ten she is still a kid, what does she know about being wife, at the age of ten she hasn't had time to be a kid, or play with toys.

Actually this is a point of the FLDS of kids marrying underage, and its going to be interesting to see how it plays out in the courts as law or freedom of religion, I think a 16 year old could say she wanted to get married, but if I were the parent I would insist on long hard couneling and questioning of the childs motive.

but the case of this article, I have to say right now that what is happening in that country is wrong.

"This country has got to stop these arranged marriages" - as much as I do agree with you that arranged marriages isn't right for any reason whatsoever..I do feel that it's none of your business? Your country should rather be busy correcting the wrongs under their own feet and leave other countries to their own beliefs and cultures - YOU can NOT FORCE your opinions onto others? What about their RIGHTS to FREEDOM OF RELIGION and what not?...Stop pushing your noses into other people's business and start sorting out the MAJOR DRUG and other problems in your own!!! - Like it or not, You DON'T HAVE THE RIGHTS to stick your noses in there???

She wasn't supposed to be married off at ten. Her parents made an arrangement with this man to marry her now and care for her as the parents were unable to do so. However, the man turned out to breach the contract with the parents and forced himself on her over and over again. She went to her parents, but they couldn't do anything so she went to the courts and they did grant her a divorce. However, she is forced to pay her husband two hundred dollars. This is common practice in other cultures as girls are not valued at all. I applaud this little girl for speaking out. She hopes she can save other girls from having to do the sam thing in the future.

I am against those arranged marriages. parents should be blame about it. They should not choose the partner of their children. Here in our country no more arranged marriage now a days.

this country will be a haven for pedophiles! Usually, arranged marriages came with dowries and families arranged it for additional wealth. This is horrible and so feudal! even if we are a poor coountry, i do not think this is an acceptable practice. To those countries who practice arranges marriages, the couples just tried their best to make the realtionships work. To allow this to children is not acceptable.

This is exactly why I am against arranged marriages. Things like this just make me so angry. Marriage should be for love, it should be a free choice, no one should ever be forced into marriage. When I picture my wedding day, I always picture it as being the happiest day of my life, right to when I will ever have children. I picture my life with the man that I love. Children are children, they should be free to play and party and not worry about taking care of someone else. This child is just that, a 10 year-old child. She hasn't even had her first menstral cycle yet, how can she know what being married is. She is still in school and playing with dolls, she should not have to be a servant to a husband. Poor child. What the Hell were her parents thinking? I feel like want to hurt them for doing that to that poor girl.
