Hanging Paintings / Sceneries at Home ?

Hi All, If you purchase or have been gifted a good Painting or a new Scenery ;how do you Hang it in your Home ? Do you use a Drill , put a Hole in Wall and Fix the Frame there ? Or you hammer a Nail and then Fix the Painting ? We have so far mostly used a Nail to hang things .Yet ;sometimes hammering a extra nail seems to present problem to the walls .
