Get a grip 'Hollywood'..

Is this too Hollywood for the serious times that we face?

The other day I watched an episode of Big Brother10 in North America, which recently started airing this summer. It is a reality type show, that I'm sure many of you know about. The season has just begun, but the other day I watched one that stirred feelings of dismay....(even contempt) within me. And I recall having this same feeling last year too! And whuddya know, it was watching the the same damn Hollywood type show, only it was Big Brother9! Coincidence? Apparently not...

So what I'm getting at is the total waste and disregard for food. That's right....the humongous amount of perfectly good (and expensive) food that is wasted on that show. And all in the interest of upping the bar of Hollywood phenomenalism.

The one on Wed night involved this huge low-walled container of liquid honey. Contestants had to crawl on their belly through the honey, and all the while covered in feathers from destroyed pillows. (so we can add the total disregard for products beyond just food, too) God only knows how many bees it took a lifetime of nest-tending to produce such a large volume of honey. I mean, there was a few hundred gallons of the stuff! I won't go into specifics of the set, but suffice to say, that after numerous sweating bodies covered in liquid honey and feathers, made for an incredible mess on the set. AND WASTE! Once the feathers are introduced to the honey, it couldn't even be used for some sort of animal consumption later.

Ok, so let's rewind back to last season, Big Brother 9. They had a similar Hollywood type set, only that time the wasted food was asparagus. Another very expensive and healthy food that many a starving soul would appreciate. (to put it lightly) And over the years they have wasted many many other food groups, ranging from Jello to fruits to you name it. All to get the desired requisite shock from the audience. But at what cost?

It is my considered opinion that a nation that is on the brink of some serious 'stuff' that is coming down the pipe and we are going to have to deal with in the not so distant future, this type of display, all in the interest of making a show, is in very poor taste to say the least. This type of Noth American display, quite franky, embarrasses me. It does not make me proud, and it sure as h*ll doesn't depict any form of reality that I can relate to.

So this is where I am even embarrassed to admit I watch the show, but find some of the dynamics of that type of show quite interesting, but I don't have to like the waste.

So would you agree that this is just a little too Hollywood for these times? Have they stepped over the line?
