Some of these you may have heard, but probably not all. All of these songs are either profoundly intelligent or darn funny. Challenge yourself to listen to some of those you are not familiar with.

These songs all have messages or meanings, many. Lyrically these are all very powerful songs. These are not necessarily favorite songs, just those In no particular order, some you know, many you will not.

A day in the Life - The Beatles. Perhapstheir greatest work, John sings the first part, Paul, the second. Shows the separate directions they were going in styles prior to the break up of the Beatles.

Synchronicity II - The Police. Contrasting the mundane life of a family and a legendary creature. Very ominous song.

Paradise by the Dashboard Lights - Meatloaf.A teen anthem, was actually against premarital sex, and how life turns as we get older.

The Skin Deeps - The Stranglers. A song about what "REAL" friendship means.

Beautiful Day- U2. Beautiful Song with descriptive imagery.

We are the Champions - Queen. Often used as a school anthem, but it was about overcoming other peoples disapproval.

Redemption Song - Bob Marley. Often misunderstood, he is singing about how you need action, not just "songs"about Redemption.

Dancing with Tears in my Eyes - Ultravox. Possibly the saddest song ever written. Captures the fears of the cold war.

The Man in the Mirror - Micheal Jackson.A song about making a change in your life for the better.

Every Breath you Take - The Police. A misunderstood song, often mistakenly used as a love song, when in fact it is about a controlling relationship.

Silver and Gold - U2. An intellectual song about power and greed.

Running the World - Jarvis Cocker. Great song about being the little guy in a world ruled by others. A song for true anarchists.

The Devils Party - INXS. Basically The world in itself IS "the Devils Party".

Three Little Birds - Bob Marley. If we could only listen to the message the birds give we would be alright.

100 Years - Five for Fighting. An absolutely wonderful song about life and getting older, looking back at your youth and reassuring your younger self about things.

Space Oddity - David Bowie. The way the song goes between two people is very cool.

Goodbye Earl - Dixie Chicks. They sing about committing a murder and getting away with it, and pretty much tell you how to do the same.

American Idiot - Green Day. A good political song, it tells people that just because they are not in power, doesn't mean they have to act a certain way or believe the same as their
"leaders"19Imagine - John Lennon. I am sure this one is on every music list in the world, but that's okay, it's worth it.

Great Summer Fair - The Box. Captures perfectly the anxiety of a little boy at the fair.

Nor Crystal Tears - Strange Advance. Another eerie song from the Cold War.

I would do Anything for Love (But I won't do that)- Meatloaf. Another love song with a
message, you have to listen to what it is he won't do in the conversation between male and female parts,it's actually very positive.

Mad World - Gary Jules. A Tears for Fears remake, that is more ominous than the original.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen. Brilliantly organized song.

Fields of Gold - Sting. Probably one of the best lyricists.

Mr. Jones - Counting Crows. Good story about how different people look at life.

Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins. Ultimately a bad kid is the fault of the parents who raised him incorrectly.

Dancing - Bauhaus. Dancing on all those things which have become so sacred they oppress us.
The Pot Head Pixies - Gong. Something totally different.

Total Eclipse - Klaus Nomi. Amazingly weird. You will think its two people singing, but it's only one... (a guy).

High - The Cure. The word placement in this song makes it very interesting and fun.

Heaven - Psychedelic Furs. Simple expression of joy.

Cities in Dust - Siouxsie and the Banshees. Good song to lift you up if you arefeeling down, because sometimes when you feel down you just need to be angry.

Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport - Rolf Harris. Well I really don't know what to say here, except my husband insisted I list this one.

Insight - Joy Division. Honestly depressingsong, as it foretold a real suicide of the singer.

Psycho Killer - Talking Heads. Kinda different, kinda fun, kinda spooky.

Right Here, Right Now - Jesus Jones. A soothing kind of song.

Psycho Killer - Talking Heads.I've said it before, why say it again?39I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking for- U2. Very real as spirituality is questioned.

Tear you Apart - She Wants Revenge. A dynamic song, the radio edited version even more estranged than the original.

Strayed - Slapp Happy with Henry Cow. This is just a different song to listen to.

Standing in a Trash Can (thinking about you)Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Heck get all his songs they are worth a listen to.

The Russians - The Police. Another Cold War song, demonstrates Stings insight to humanity.

Taxi - Harry Chapin. Good story song worth listening to how peoples lives turn out.

Sequel to Taxi - Harry Chapin. A follow up to the touching first one.

Peace on Earth - U2. Although written and recorded before the notorious events known as 9/11, this song very much captures the moment in time.

Don't you Forget about Me - Simple Minds. Classic 80's music that should bring back memories of how it feels to be a teenager.

Lose Yourself - Eminem. Although I don't much care for rap, this is a good song.

The Tale - Meredith Monk. Just plain "different" this song will make you laugh.

If I had a Million Dollars - Barenaked Ladies. This is a fun fun song, we all have dreams.

Lovers in a Dangerous Time - Bruce Cockburn. A different kind of love song.

Heroes - David Bowie. A timeless song, yet dated.
