Have you heard of the large hadron collider? email this discussion to a friend?

LHC (large hadron collider) is $5.8 billion project built near the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). It is funded and built in collaboration with over two thousand physicists from thirty-four countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.

The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature. The first particle beams are due for injection in August 2008, with the first collisions planned to take place about two months later.

Physicist and scientist are in search of what others called "God's particle", in which the colliding protons will recreate energies and conditions last seen a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. CERN is 100% sure about the safety of this experiment and all those who filed suit were dismissed. There are risks beyond imagination like creating a black hole, stranglets that could swallow the universe or create catastropic imbalance on earth.

Definitely, this is another research for armaments with the US government actively involved in the research.

If you want to know more about this project that will operate April, 2009, search for "large hadron collider".

Are they really wasting this much ($5 to $10 billion) money that can put our relation with other planets at risk?

The ONLY reason the US is interested is because it can have a devastating military application.
Billions of dollars, don't you think that money could have gone into some constuctive, not destructive?
I like science and research, but this is something that is NOT for the world's benefit. What will it accomplish if they find the god particle? What good will it do the world? Seems like a HUGE waste of money to me.

Actually, ths is not a surprise to see US in this project. So many people are hungry and they spend money on research that has a possibility to destroy us all!

One of the main aims of the CERN large hadron collider (LHC) is to discover whether an elementary particle called the Higgs boson exists or not. LHC consists of a 27km circular underground tunnel in which beams of particles will smash together at near light speed.

The discovery of the Higgs-boson will help us to understand the relationship between Einstein's general theory of relativity and the world of quantum mechanics. Relativity theory describes gravity, while the other three fundamental forces of electromagnetism, strong nuclear forces and weak nuclear forces are explained by quantum mechanics, also known as the Standard Model of particle physics. Even if no Higgs boson is found the research will still aid in the development of other theories and give us a better understanding of our universe and how the very nature of reality is constructed.

Mini black holes might be created but these are tiny subatomic structures comparable to electrons or protons. They will last for less than a second and pose no threat to life on earth.

I have a physicist friend and he told us of this research. he even told us of the anti matter at cern. I think, the scientists are not sure of what really would happen once this collision starts. Although they will test einstein theories, it could be wrong and a black hole can be created that will not disintegrate. How can they assure us that it will not happen when they do not know really what will be the result. so many things can happen here.

Honestly, a part of me wants this reserch because we will be exploring what is beyond our knowledge but a part of me says this is insane because we need more food than this.

subatomic particles from outer space crash into the earth every second. That's how they know the experiment is safe. We have the technology and know-how to feed the worlds population ten times over. People starve because governments lack the political will or desire to prevent it.

What i am really wary about this experiment is the involvement of USA government. I just get this funny feeling that when they are in the picture, something sinister is involved. this experiment is really a scientific breakthrough and the subproducts can be used illegally!

hi everlasting trust the governments to waste money and this is one huge waste why five billion to ten billiion could do so]
much good for people if used to eliminate hunger and poverty
and make jobs for people in these countries instead of using
'it on some stupid boondoggle that could well cause a catstrophe. no, this is just plain wasting money.

With the economic condition of most countries now, I think this is really a waste of money. I am not even sure how this will help us ordinary people. The micro version of the law of relativity of einstein was used to create a weapon of mass distruction.

I heard about this a few months ago (even started a discussion but no one was interested at the timeblush) and still haven't decided exactly what I think about it. I mean, when the first nuclear tests where being done there were some who thought the chain reaction might never end and we'd wind up with a miniature sun in the desert. I guess theoretically, something could go wrong and end up destroying the Earth; but we've screwed it up so badly already that maybe that'd be for the best.

myLot reputation of 72/100. everlasting (9229)   ranked 13 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

Gonna look for that discussion!

Anyway, since they will contain this in a big (no it is giant!) donut-like lab, they said it is safe. And since they are not really sure what will happen after the collision, I am wary. There are so many computations by scientists that were proved wrong.

For some reason, as I read this discussion popcorn came into my mind except on a much larger scale. I wonder just how many scientific experiments have ended up a total disaster?

myLot reputation of 72/100. everlasting (9229)   ranked 13 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

Lots but they will not admit it since they spent millions if not billions of dollars. Party, i hope they succeed and they can prove something that can be of use to us.

This is both interesting and scary... the thought of seeing the energies that no one ever dreamed possible is quite appealing to scientist... and i think they see great potential in this... but if give to the wrong hands... that might lead to devastation... i never thought they can invent something like this... and it is like playing God... i hope nothing bad happens... but if it does... we know who is responsible...

myLot reputation of 72/100. everlasting (9229)   ranked 13 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

i do not think they are pplaying god here. they just want to tet the verasity of what einstein started and some physics theories they wan to prove. if this go to the wrong hands, it could be used to innocent people just like the hiroshima.

See this is an example of why we need better science education. The large Hadron collider has no military impilactions at all. It's about pure fundamental science and understanding the basic nature of matter. How can we not investigate that? I'm lucky enough to know people who work in this area and they are some of the most dedicated selfless and clever people on the planet. This isn't reocket science, rocket science is easy compared to some of this!

I think the fact that such a global collaboration has mangaged to happen at all, in the face of endless cutbacks, spending reviews and other management mumbo jumbo BS, is awesome and i can't wait to see the result of some of this research.

myLot reputation of 72/100. everlasting (9229)   ranked 13 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

i hope you are right, indium! US never dip its fingers on things that will not benefit them.

@indium...I wanted to believe that the people behind this doesn't want any military application but who knows? Let me equate some of the things that started as non - military scientific discoveries/ inventions but later on ended exactly at that 1. airplane(civilian)= added with guns (fighter planes) 2. Ships (exploration)= added with canons and guns(gun ships, carrier) 3. Rockets= missiles 4. chemistry= nerve gas 5. biology= weapon grade organisms and a lot more. Can you blame someone like me to be skeptical?

The antimatter that was discovered in this facility, CERN, could be used as weapons but not in a conventional way. They still have problems but they were able to do it when it was only touted as a science fiction weapon.

myLot reputation of 69/100. indium (1413)   ranked 38 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

everlasting is right. at the moment any way we could possibly use anything from this as a weapons technology is pure fiction. 99% of drug research, automotive tech, computer tech, basically everything! is closer to weapons than this!

Good day. hi. With this we can say that our goal to world peace takes a step further. I don't know but when a civilization progress in their technology, arts, politics and economics, we will see that on top of it is their clamor for military superiority as if they are anticipating a war. Is it inherent in us as human being the thirst for blood? This project is somewhat a protege of the Oppenheimer led Manhattan project. Let's just hope that the ones responsible for this wouldn't say what Oppenheimer had said - "I've become death". or worse they'll say "I've become GOD"...

Well, most weapons of mass destruction were first good experiements in the name of science until it brings out its ugly head. it is the obsession to dominate that is driving them to discover weapons that will help them achieve this.

I've heard about it.
They say that it's a possible source of a much more efficient energy output.
A droplet could power off a city for a couple of months maybe even years,
(like what they say).
Maybe that is the reason why they are funding it.

myLot reputation of 72/100. everlasting (9229)   ranked 13 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

this is just a speculation. the scientist do not know what will be the outcome of this experiment as in whay components will be produced.

I think I have seen this somewhere in a docu film in NGC or discovery. They are studying the smallest particles by smashing the atoms further which they say will reveal the origin of the universe and the amount of energy it could produce if they would be successful trying to split an atom further. I really do not know what the purpose of trying to chope it further as I am not a nuclear physicist myselflol But I am interested what they would discover and if they would ever find use for it other than producing a weapon.

myLot reputation of 72/100. everlasting (9229)   ranked 13 out of 598 in science  2 months ago

they want to know what really happened when the universe was created. they want to identify the forces and elements present then and measure everything. They will produce elements that are not present today on earth in micro level.
