Juneau's losing his fur!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 89/100. thelastwolf113 (2987) 4 years ago

I am freaking out. Juneau is my Malamute with a really thick undercoat. Usual shedding this is not! I can even see his skin in a couple of places. I've never seen his skin before, EVER!
It's not itchy, he hasn't scratched, it just comes out in clumps. Malamutes can shed in clumps, so that in itself is not unusual. It's being about to see his skin that's worrisome.
The only thing I can think of is I decided to use a Natural product for flea and tick repellent, thinking it would be better for him.
I have an appointment for the vet on Friday, my husband is away and I have no other way to get Juneau there. So I'll just worry myself crazy in the meanwhile.
Has this happened to anyone else's dog?
Will the fur grow back?

Scary! We've had a couple of dogs randomly start losing hair. One had hypothyroidism and the other had Cushings. As soon as they started their treatments, they stopped losing hair and started growing it back. If Juneau is acting like he feels okay, I wouldn't get too upset. He might just have a hormonal imbalance that needs a bit of an adjustment.

I hope he's furry again soon! happy

I recently had him checked for hypothyroidism! His tests came back normal. I'm wondering if the tests were wrong. Juneau displays symptoms of hypothyroidism, extremely lazy, and he's a little overweight but only eats 2 cups of food once a day. He's 118 lbs., 2 real cups, I mean 16 oz measured, is not much food for a dog his size, it took him 15 months to lose 7 lbs.
Last month he had a dry flakiness of his skin and it wasn't white like dandruff. Think dandruff but tan in color. When the Vet saw that he said it may be a sign of hypothroidism. So he drew blood but the tests came back normal.
I'll talk to the doctor again because everything points to him having an underactive thyroid.
Thank you so much for your input, I will definitely revisit the thyroid issue again, see if there isn't another way of diagnosing it.

Sorry for not responding earlier. You might want to suggest to your doctor that he run an autoimmune panel on your dog. We had a dog that didn't test low for thyroid hormones, but her autoimmune antibodies were high and she greatly benefited from the added hormones.

Hopefully, Juneau is feeling better by now and this won't be at all helpful! happy

I'm so sorry about your baby losing his hair. I had one do this in the heat, with a lot of thick hair it just made his skin hot and the hair came out. I don't know what's wrong with your baby, I hope it's the heat or not serious.

Thank you, it means a lot that you sympathize.

One of my dog also shed hair whenever i let them eat certain brand of dog food. Sardines is also a non-no because they will shed fur so much. My vet has an injection that keeps the fleas and ticks for 3 months. it is effective to them.

myLot reputation of 89/100. thelastwolf113 (2987)  4 years ago

The injection sounds like exactly what I need for him. I'm going to ask the Vet on Friday.
Juneau's diet is a good one, no problems with that. The more I think about it, the more I think it was the clove oil in that repellent. Too much came out at once and i really think that was what caused it. But now I'm reluctant to put anything on his skin. Thanks for this info! I will feel so much better with this option. Do you know the name of it?

myLot reputation of 74/100. everlasting (9950)  4 years ago

I did not remember the name of the injection. I am sure your vet know this thing.

oh poor juneau! I hope it is the flea stuff you used and nothing serious. It is hard when our furry babies are sick. My Akita is on medication she has to take twice a day because of a bladder problem and if we miss a dosage it is horrible for her cause she leaks so bad without her pills. I am hoping that as she matures so will her bladder and we can have a normal dog again. I ended up getting our money back from her breeder cause she had so many problems...the bladder leakage, sores all over her privates........and has to be on medication forever and we had over $500 in vet bills right off the bat when we got her. We love her so we accept her problems and all.

I hope it's nothing serious, though I'm feeling very guilty about hurting him. I know I was only trying to do right by him but still I feel bad.
I know what you mean about when our little fur-faces are sick or hurt. If Juneau were to get ill, I'd pay any amount of money to get him better, as I would for my son or my husband. Juneau is a part of our family and we love him no matter what.

How is juneau doing? Is he any better? I know you said you were taking him to the vet if he didn't get better.
