What do you think of Johnny Depp's Willie Wonka role? |
| |
| I thought he brought a whole new dimension to the role. Gene Wilder was brilliant and his Willie Wonka role will always stay in my memory but Depp's interpretation of the character's given me more to think about. The glimpses of the traumatic family life were illustrated well by the confused looks on Depps face as his memory went back in time and I enjoyed his slightly insane dark side. I was interested to note that as, in 'The Pirate of the Carabean' movies where he was influenced by Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones, he also seemed to use some character traits from someone famous. Michael Jackson was unmistakably a strong influence but my son didn't notice it; does anyone agree? What do you think of how he played the role? | | | | | |

| | Yeah I loved the way he was obviously relishing when bad things happened to the kids and I like the part where he pretended to look for the key when Veruca was being shoved down the shute by the squirrels. lol I was pleased to see that Rahl Dahl (I'm sure that's spelt wrong) had some input because he wrote the, or some of the, songs. They're bound to have asked his opinion about things too. I loved it!!! | | | |

| | Yeah I loved those bits too. It's Roald Dahl but who's splitting hairs? LOL I would like to see them do James and the Giant Peach or Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator next. | | | |

| | I have never actually read the book, but I think I prefer Gene Wilder for the role. The movie from the 70s is just so classic that I can't help but absolutely love it. I do also love Johnny and he did a fantastic job, it was just, to me, a different twist of the character. | | | | | | |

| | I love that Johnny strayed away from Gene Wilder's "Wonka". They totally don't compare bc they took on the role of Wonka so differently. Wilder's was more sarcastic, monotoned, and moody...Johnny's was more comical and disturbed. I love it bc in interviews, Johnny always laughs and even amazes himself at how he creepy he was. I don't know why people say it was Johnny's "worst role ever". I guess it's bc it was totally out of his element? But the thing is that he ALWAYS challenges himself and does a role that is so far from who he really is. So portraying Wonka the way he did really is Johnny-esque. Whatever, Johnny's just amazing. | | | | | | |

| | You're right, Johnny is amazing! I can't remember the name of the film but did you see the one where he played an corrupt FBI agent who had his eyes taken out and when he was blind was shooting people? Lol incredible! | | | |

| | Haha yes! That movie is "Once Upon a Time in Mexico", and he played Agent Sands. Aw I loved him in that movie. Hahaha I especially love when he would have those fake arms resting on top of the table with his real hands under the table holding a gun. And his little lunch box! Ohhh I love him. | | | |

| | I think, even though Depp is a marvellous actor, and does something really different with every role he plays, that I still prefer the original version with Gene Wilder. Depp's film is much darker in many ways, and I wasn't entirely convinced by the back story about his awful dentist father. However, the family of parents and grandparents in the newer version were more quirky than the original set - though I liked them as well. When the second version came out, I asked myself what had happened to the children from the original version, and finished up writing an article on the subject which has been far more popular than anything else I've written on the Net - to my surprise! http://cinemaroll.com/fan... | | | | | | |

| | Do you agree that Michael Jackson was an influence in Depp's role? I see it in the voice and mannerisms. | | | |

| | Yes, it's certainly possible that Jackson was a model for the role. Which makes it all the more creepier, given Jackson's unhappy history with children. | | | |
