“Retaliatory eviction” You won’t believe this, but you've got to hear this | |
Ok! Now we’ve lived at the same address for 8 years, never once have we been late with rent nor have we made any trouble. It all started when I got a call from my mom saying that someone had been in her apartment while she was at work. She had found cigarette butts in the ashtrays (she doesn’t smoke) and a lot of her clothes were gone. So of course I caught all four winds heading to moms house. When I got there I told her to call the landlord because whoever got in had a key. We called the landlord and asked had she changed the locks prior to mom moving in and she said “yes and I have the only spare key”, so we told her what happened and she said she’d be here shortly with a locksmith. (OK y’all here comes the kicker, you’re going to love this!)
When the landlord and locksmith arrived we noticed there was a third person with them “the landlords daughter” who was carrying “Two” large Aldi’s shopping bag which at the time didn’t seem important (I just figured she’d been shopping) so while the locksmith changed the locks the rest of us inspected the apartment while mom explained what she’d found and what was missing. (Ok I’ll try to make a long story short)
Anyway the locksmith finished, a few more words were exchanged and they all left. (We didn’t notice that the daughter left with only ONE bag when she came in with TWO). I told mom I thought she should call the police but she said since the locks & doors weren’t broken it would be hard to prove so she never called. Now two days later I was moving things around and when I moved the sofa, there’s a shopping bag behind it with all my moms missing clothes, I called my mom into the room and said “you’re not going to believe this $hit”. Mom was furious and said “don’t touch anything” then called the landlord to come up to see it. We told her that we knew that her daughter had to be the culprit (but I think she had to already know this). Needless to say “The $hit hit the fan” and my mom ain’t no joke when it comes to her belongings and I did everything I could to keep her from going downstairs and kicking every A$$ that got that got between her and the landlords daughter…(and please believe, there was a time when my mom would have done just that)…Now after all this the landlord sends my mom an eviction notice saying that when her lease expires she wants her out, which is no “Biggie” because as you all know I was buying my mom a house but it’s just the principle of the thing. “OH YEAH!” and check this out… After noticing that our electric bill was exceptionally high we had the company come out to check it and they found that the basement utility room’s power is connected to our apartment which means mom has been paying that too…”FOR 8 YEARS”. Don’t you know that when she goes to court my mom is going to sue them for everything but they’re underwear. Wow can you believe this?
So myloters has anyone out there had their tenants rights violated?

It was me and a girlfriend renting and we were about 19. One day we are sitting in the living room and this guy just walks right in. He was there to fix a window and the landlord had told him to just go in! We were to pay half the electric bill too, he would never show us the bill and would just make up numbers in his head. When we asked to see the bills he got upset that we didn't believe him! We moved out and he sued me in small claims court for the electric bill. He lost, he was trying to make us pay the majority. I never rented a place that I shared hydro with again! I guess there is a lot of bad tenants too, I just hope someday I can afford a mortgage so I can kiss landlords goodbye once and for all!

blkcat1 (3058) | 1 year ago | Thanks for responding and yes save that money and maybe get a two unit so you'll have help with that morgage. Rent is so high these days that you can almost pay a morgage with the same amount.

| | 2. Hatley (20324) | 4 months ago | wow what a story, thats just plain awful. we had one apartment where our electric bill was just much higher than it should be and the electric meter reader clued us in, the man in the apartment next door had somehow got his electricity hooked up to our electic meter and we had been paying ours and his electricity all that time. the electric co. came and fixed it up, and sent the neighbor to prison for cheating on the electric bill.. Your mom had the landlady from hell evidently. wowl.
