Does Nature Inspire you or Surprise you? |
|
I take one hour out of every day to walk in the woods. Nature restores me and sends me all kinds of presents. One day I found a feather from a blue jay. It seemed to be waiting there for me. I see deer, rabbits and ground hogs. I marvel at the beautiful trees, lakes, streams and flowers. I really like moss too. Okay, so I'm weird. Yesterday, nature gave me quite a surprise. This bright orange little guy was crawling in the leaves. He stopped to let me take his picture, but my hand was shaking because I was so excited. I hope you can see him in the picture. I think he's a salamander. Do you walk in the woods, or a park? What kind of discoveries have you made in your travels? Any inspirations or surprises? Anyone have a bear story to tell?

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | I was wondering if there was a bear story out there! I didn't expect a story about someone owning a bear though. How unusual. Was the bear friendly enough to get close to it? What did the bear eat? I read a story about two women who raised a lion from a cub and then released it into the wilderness. Did you catch that story somewhere? I lived near a Nature Center for years and I enjoyed it as well. The schools took students there to learn about the trees and foliage. I learned also during my walks. Travel lightly

webeishere (9348) | 4 weeks ago | You could hold the bear cub and cuddle it. But it's claws were very sharp. We wore leather chaps when we fed it the bottle. It would literally claw it's way up your legs to get at the bottle. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

2. ShepherdSpy (1202) | 4 weeks ago | Sounds like there's a bit more Wildlife around You than there is Here in Ireland..We have no Native Large Wild Animals left.. What Red Deer that are here are on Managed Estates...We DO have Foxes,Badgers,Rabbits,Pine Martens,Kingfishers,Hawks,Herons,Cormorants, and in this area, what was an increasingly rare bird, the Corncrake,is being encouraged back..There's some Wonderful scenery within a Mile of my place, and I like to bike around the area to see it!The place where I work has a golfcourse and grassy areas beside it,and We often see rabbits out sunning themselves! The Migratory birds like the Swallow are here for the Summer, nest building and performing amazing aerobatics chasing one another guarding their nests! Here's a photo from a place near Me!

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | I think it sounds like you have more wildlife than I do. I have so many questions, if you get back to this discussion. A Red Deer is a Red Dear because of its colour? How big do they get? What's a Managed Estate? When I see rabbits I never considered the fact that they were sunning themselves. Now I learned something else from you. Thanks for the photo, it came out very clear. Mine are always fuzzy or blurred. Thanks for educating everyone on mylot. mylot is a wonderful place to learn about other countries and people.

ShepherdSpy (1202) | 4 weeks ago | Here's a little more information for You about Red Deer! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Deer An Estate is simply a Large property of Land Owned by someone,Sometimes by a Lord..A Managed estate is one such that is run as a Business,For example,Raising Deer or Pheasant,or growing trees for timber..

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | Thanks for the link to the website. Those deers are huge and scary looking. I read that it is common to eat venison. Is this true for you? I think I would be scared to hunt one, good thing I don't hunt or eat meat. I didn't know there were still places that the word lord was still used as a title. Managed property sounds like a good idea to me.

ShepherdSpy (1202) | 4 weeks ago | Deer are Very Shy Animals..They'd run if you came close!I've seen a Red Stag once, but not close up. They'd only be a risk if you were hanging around in their mating season or threatening their Young, though I've never heard of someone being attacked..There was a Man in this area killed by a Bull not so long ago,and I've heard of Cows attacking someone who got into their space when there were Young Calves around.. I used to work beside an Estate owned by a Duke-The place I used to work in was formerly the Schoolhouse for the Estate workers' Children! It was renovated into an Inn/Hotel. The people I worked for set up the business to cater for Corporate Leisure interests,ie Clay pigeon Shooting,Outdoor pursuits teambuilding groups,Fishing, and Hunting of the Estate's Pheasant and Sika Deer..The Venison and Pheasant was then available for sale...If You like Meat, they're very good!

ShepherdSpy (1202) | 4 weeks ago | These are all newly posted..I don't think I can reuse photos from my profile page in discussions! I'm pleased You like them! I have many more printed photos than I do have digital, and I wanted to scan some of those-I've recently bought a new computer running Vista, and my scanner that I had for my old machine won't work with this one!

3. Nonnymouse (405) | 4 weeks ago | Inspiring and surprising! Inspiring because we have a few acres and the birds which visit us are wonderful beyond belief. All the brilliant colours of the rainbow. Australia has some of the most beautiful birds in the world. I was walking near the dam and I saw a tiny baby Golden Bell Frog, which they are worried about here because there are so few left. I was so cheered because I thought if there is one there must be more of them. I am telling no-one. As soon as man starts interfering that's when everything goes wrong. Now for the surprising! A few years ago I was walking in the paddock and came across a huge patch of clover. When I searched, I was amazed to find not just one, but half a dozen four leafed clovers. I was so excited, as I hurried to get indoors to show my husband I tripped over a root and broke my ankle. Not so lucky eh? Love that little orange fellow!

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | nonymouse- I had so much fun reading your post. I would keep that frog a secret as well. Humans do interfere too much with Nature. Is a Golden Bell Frog yellow? We had some Bald Eagles that were on the endangerd list. They made a nest on a telephone pole of all things! The nest was on a road often traveled. Everyone kept pulling over, straining to get a peek. So many cars were pulling over, the cops stopped people from watching because they were disturbing the eagles. Your surprise is an amazing suprise! I wish you had a picture of the four leaf clovers. From all my wanderings and searching and never finding one, I thought they were a myth. And you found a whole patch of them! Your broken ankle clears up the lucky part though. Unless something good happened afterwards that only occurred because you broke your ankle?

4. mentalward (1301) | 4 weeks ago | Nature does both to me... inspires and surprises. I grew up in a city where there was a park nearby where us kids always went to play. We used to find salamanders and garter snakes. Then, I moved to the suburbs, near the city. Next, I moved to the suburbs away from a big city. The next move, my last (hopefully!) is finally in the country. Nature is all around. I've always collected the "goodies" that nature provides. Did you know you can make "angels" out of tulip tree seeds, acorns and maple tree seeds? When I used to fish at a certain river, I was surprised by a snake every now and then. Luckily, they were more surprised than I was and slithered away. I visited a friend in the country once when I was young and we would take walks and get full by eating what nature provided: wild blackberries, raspberries, huckleberries, apples, cherries, etc.; although I had a suspicion that the applies and cherries actually belonged to someone. LOL I have a friend who lives not too far away in the mountains and he has dozens of lizards around his house; all different kinds. Myself, I have to chase Canadian geese away from my veggie garden and fruit trees almost every day! I'm sure the neighbors think I'm batty when they see me running after the geese with my arms waving and yelling at them! My cousin, who lives in the mountains in Pennsylvania, has told me that there is a bear living nearby who has been reeking havoc in her neighborhood. Apparently, they REALLY love birdseed! This guy has been knocking over the feeders and dragging them into the woods. He and I would fight if it were me and he was messing with my garden! LOL Nature is awesome. I think that's the best word to describe it. I love standing near a window and watching the lightning during a thunderstorm (unless warned to stay away from windows, of course). I've gone out on our deck after sunset and seen newly-constructed spiderwebs with the little guy just sitting there, waiting for supper to fly in. I hate spiders, but they can live outside, eating the bad bugs. I'm fine with that. I just went outside, in the rain, because my husband told me as he was leaving for work, "It's raining and the geese are in the front yard!" I was all prepared to give 'em a run for their money, umbrella in hand, but they were gone. Apparently, his truck had scared them away, or else they knew that the REAL maniac had been summoned. LOL We really should try to live hand-in-hand with nature and take lessons from it. If everyone did this, it would be such a peaceful world! I watched 'Dances with Wolves' last night. The American Indians sure knew how to live before we invaded their territory and destroyed everything!

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | lamb- hi. I love that name Grace for a daughter. The name itself brings up images of peace and inner calm. A three mile hike is impressive. Forgive me for not knowing why you are in pain. Do you and your daughter have books and binoculars to identify the birds? Or do you already learn the species names? Do you keep a log?

7. palonghorn (2433) | 4 weeks ago | It both inspires me and provides surprises. First, that is a salamander, they are in the forest here in great numbers. I love going walking in the woods, and it is a rare thing for me to go without my camera. I have always loved moss on the cypress trees down south. I have yet to see a bear on my walks, thank goodness, lol as there are a pretty good number of them in the Northeast. I also love taking a walk to the small park here where I live, there is a small lake, with swans and ducks there and a foot bridge. I also like just sitting out in our backyard, we have two birdfeeders, and just the other day a gold finch showed up, it was so bright and beautiful, yep I got pics, and we have squirrels that live in our tree and come up to the porch for peanuts, and bunnies, even on that likes to eat the birdseed that the birds leave below the feeders lol.

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | palonghorn - Okay, now I can be sure my little orange guy is a salamander. I like the moss that grows in the woods on the hardwood trees and the forest ground. I try to take pictures of it, but they never look good. I think it's my camera. Even though the American lifestyle is push, push, push and run around, getting as much as one can, there is great value in doing the things you mentioned. Maybe appreciating nature is the secret to inner peace. The act of observing Nature is a rewarding experience. Thanks for sharing the attached picture. How do you keep the squirrels from eating all the bird food? I had beautiful pics of a Cardinal but due to unfortunate circumstances, I no longer have them. It's nice to know other people are appreciating Nature's beauty.

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | Nice picture. thanks. Usually squirrels will do anything to get to a bird feeder. Maybe they don't try because you feed them peanuts. I've watched two squirrels work together to break into a bird feeder because one squirrel alone couldn't do it! Smart little guys.

8. snowy22315 (4365) | 4 weeks ago | I dont do it on a routine basis, because believe or not, my dog doesnt like to walk in the woods. I think maybe low hanging branches smack him in the face or soemthing. There is a short trail in the woods to walk to our beach. I usally marvel at the giant mushrooms and the discarded nut shells left by the squirrels. My house is surrounded by trees so I kind of feel like I live in the woods. No bears as of yet although everything else is around here, including deer, fox and possibly coyotes.

anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | snowy - this is very strange. Not your story, but I commented back on your comment and now its not here! I know mylot went down for awhile. Maybe the response got dropped. Anyhow, I smiled imagining a dog being afraid of walking in the woods. But then I felt bad for him if the branches were hitting him in the face. I wonder if he keeps you out of the woods to protect you. Maybe he knows there is a bear waiting for you to pass by. (only kidding) What a privilege to have both a woodsy area and a beach to enjoy. Not many of us have that. I have heard coyotes howling at night and it sends shivers up my spine,

9. dragon54u (2714) | 4 weeks ago | It surprises and amazes me! I love to watch the birds around my house and noticed, to my surprise, that they like to tease my dog who will run around like a crazy thing chasing them and barking at them. Squirrels do that, too. They all have such fun! There are a lot of bees and wasps around but I'm never stung even though they will rest on my arm or hand for a few seconds.
| |
| |
|
|
anawar (1030) | 4 weeks ago | dragon= I never heard of birds teasing a dog. I had a huge lovable cat who was an excellent hunter. He never did catch a Blue Jay, and I watched as the birds flew down, tapped his head and flew away. Poor Dancer. Squirrels are characters alright! I love to watch them running everywhere. One day I watched a squirrel do a backwards flip-over. I wish someone had seen it with me, because sometimes I think I imagined it! I don't like bees landing on me and it's almost impossible for me not to jump. Sometimes they don't sting, it's true. I can't always be calm though but I won't kill them. I blow on them and they fly away. Wasps, oooh, I watch out for those stingers. The ones near me are vicious.
