you know those pesky things that fly around and buzz
My dog does NOT have a flea problem at all

Oh I am sorry i am not wake yet, then that is a big problem other than planting basil which i believe flies don't like, maybe you could make an aussie hat with corks haning down to stop the flies from his face, oh i hope you get an answer for this it must be awful...

the closest pet store is 2 hours away
do they sell anything at Walmart that works well
I am on a tight budget and dont heave money to waste on products that dont work

the only way to get a discussion deleted is to have it reported
minusing it wont get it deleted

Are the prices at that site reasonable?

Okay hold on ....I know some of these places get you with the shipping costs...let me hunt around for some kind of "home" remedy that you might be able to make yourself.

I see this is 4 weeks old. I just thought I would ask if the oil worked. And, maybe you could plant some live spearmint around him, then you won't have to keep buying the oil.

he does not have any open cuts or wounds
I dont know of that soap and the only anti bacterial soap I have is my Dial hand soap and my Dawn dishwashing liquid
both are scented. would the scent attract more flies?

This may sound odd but I dont want to trap or ki8ll the flies
i just want to keep them off of him

I will have to ask some of the farmers around here about some products
yes he used to be a strictly indoor dog but he is overweight and benefits from the excersize he gets from running around the yard chasing birds
he also loves laying on the covered porch soaking up the breeze that blows through
we dont force him out he actually chooses to be outside all day
he wakes up around 6 AM and wakes me or hubby up because he wants to go lay on the porch

I am not trying to shoot holes in your suggestion but
he doesnt have a dog house or a pen
he has full run of the yard so short of covering the WHOLE yard and porch with cedar chips what do you suggest

Well lets see then, if he has one place that his water is and food maybe you could put a couple of bags of the chips there? If he gets under the porch to cool off, you can use that? I also have a friend that told me about tea tree oil, you can also get this at Wal-Mart ( gosh I love this store ha! ) it is in the vitamins section and a 2fl.oz bottle will run you around $5.oo but you add water to it.
It has so many uses, as it is not harmful to animals. adults put it on skin for cuts. You mix with shampoo to keep lice away. Its wild.


You just have to mix it with water and spray it on the animal, covering his eyes and mouth. Not a wonderful smell. but it works well as a bug spray inside your house also without worrying about making kids and animals sick.. You could spray around the area where your dog lays and then puts some cedar chips down. Double duty.. shouldn't cost more than $ 20.00. the cedar chips are comfortable too, my dog loves to lay on them, instead of in her dog house.

so if I put the cedar chips under the deck that should be good for when he lays under there and on the deck right?

Hey it looks like we're getting somewhere now. Everything I have read on the tea tree oil states that it does kill spiders! You have to play around with the strength some. Maybe stronger for around the area and on the deck and not so strong on the dog.! I would spray it on my hands or even use gloves and rub it on the dogs head and ears and around his eyes. I have never had to use tea tree oil on my dog. The cedar chips seem to do the trick, and we have never had a problem with fleas either and she wears no flea collar!

I truly hope this works. Let me know. Also if you leave his food out, that might be the only other thing I can suggest not to do, but we do leave ours out and only occasionally do we get flies in Molly's food,and that too is surrounded by cedar chips.

I have a brown recluse issue INSIDE the house that i need to take care of as well so maybe I can kill 2 bugs with one stone LOL
he eats dry food and I havent noticed any flies in his bowl

Ha! I think I would take a shoe to that brown recluse! No seriously, good luck I really hope it works for both your sakes. And your lucky about the flies. Let me know what happens!

I will have to try that for the spiders. I hate hate hate spiders and I always get them in my place,but I don't want to use insect repellant because of my cat.

I dont want to kill the flies
I just want to keep them off my dog

The flies will be attracted to the natural scents your dog gives off, from the fur, to the warm blood scent in the tips of the ears, to the scent of his anal glands.
They will also be attracted to his urine and feces.
There are sprays that are used for horses, but the spray wears off and must be applied, which in the mean time, means that more and more flies will be attracted, they will mate and produce more flies.
I guess the best suggestion, is to search the web for fly control and decide which product suites your needs and desires.
