My dog needs your help |
My dog spends his days outside in the fenced in yard now that we are here at the new house. The problem is that now that weather is warm he just gets covered with flies. I feel so bad for him because the are all over him and crawling on his eyes and ears. he is forever shaking trying to get rid of them but they keep coming back. What can I do for him to keep the flies off of him? (yes I have tried bathing him but the flies still swarm him) Is there a spray that I can use on him that is safe? Is it safe to use human insect repelents like off on him? *trying to get rid of my star so please MINUS this discussion and any comment left by me here thanks*

2. SamQuinn (657) | 4 weeks ago | If you go to the pet store, they have some gel that you can put on your dogs ears, face, and anywhere else he really has a problem with flies. His coat should protect his back, legs and tails -- but if it doesn't, the gel will work there, too. Good luck!

pyewacket (8065) | 4 weeks ago | Bingo...found something.. SPEARMINT OIL 2 YEA [YEA] 08/01/2006: Dawn from North Hollywood, CA writes: "You mix 15-20 drops of spearmint oil in a spray bottle with water, spray on fur and ears, careful not to get in eyes, you can spray dog houses, the outer perimeter of your home and the flies disappear almost instantly. my dogs are 7 and I have never found anything that worked until I tried this." [YEA] 07/10/2006: Dawn from North Hollywood, CA writes: "I would like to tell you about something I discovered I did not see on your site. Dogs and Flies... My dogs were being eaten up by flies, a friend recommended spearmint oil and it worked. I have been using it over a week now and there has not been one fly around them since. IT WORKS." It's from this website http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/flies.html

WhatsHerName (1389) | 1 day ago | I see this is 4 weeks old. I just thought I would ask if the oil worked. And, maybe you could plant some live spearmint around him, then you won't have to keep buying the oil.

4. kerriannc (1455) | 4 weeks ago | Hello Zukepr, do not used the insect repellent. Is there a drug or pharmacy near by you. You can explain the situation to the person there and he/she will recommend a powder of an ointment that can be used to bathe him. In the meantime check and see if there is any cuts on him. Do you know a soap that name carbolic if you does and have it or any antibotic soap use it to give him a bath and see if it will work in the meantime. All the best. Kerry

zukepr (10090) | 4 weeks ago | he does not have any open cuts or wounds I dont know of that soap and the only anti bacterial soap I have is my Dial hand soap and my Dawn dishwashing liquid both are scented. would the scent attract more flies?

5. sugarplum9084 (608) | 4 weeks ago | I have had this problem before, it's horrible. We once had a dog that would always get covered with flies, it was so hard to help. You must be careful though, some flies bite dogs, open up a wound, and lay their eggs! This has happened to us, and once they inhabit the dog it takes a lot of special shampoos to get rid of them (maggots are NOT fun!). We never let that dog outside longer than an hour after that incident. I am sure your local pet store has some kind of spray to repel the flies. Also maybe put up some fly traps (the bag ones) in the trees, they can do a lot to help your situation. I hope this helps!

7. theproperator (2002) | 4 weeks ago | If you have a Southern States or other farm supply store in your area, they sell a fly spray for horses. I'm not sure if the spray they have for horses will also work on dogs, but I'm sure someone who works there would know. Plus, it would probably be cheaper since it is made for livestock and not pets. Just a thought, why can't you let the dog inside? It sounds like he used to be indoors before you moved.

zukepr (10090) | 4 weeks ago | I will have to ask some of the farmers around here about some products yes he used to be a strictly indoor dog but he is overweight and benefits from the excersize he gets from running around the yard chasing birds he also loves laying on the covered porch soaking up the breeze that blows through we dont force him out he actually chooses to be outside all day he wakes up around 6 AM and wakes me or hubby up because he wants to go lay on the porch

8. nutthouse3 (49) | 4 weeks ago | I do the same thing with my dog. She stays outside all the time unless it gets below freezing, or if it is storming outside, then she comes in. Believe me it is her choice too, We try to get her to come inside, but she is happier outside chasing her squirrels.. But what I use is Cedar Chips. I get them at the Wal-mart. We have always used cedar chips in our dogs pens and we have never had a problem with flies or fleas. They smell good too. And not expensive either! Hope this helps!

zukepr (10090) | 4 weeks ago | I am not trying to shoot holes in your suggestion but he doesnt have a dog house or a pen he has full run of the yard so short of covering the WHOLE yard and porch with cedar chips what do you suggest
| |
| nutthouse3 (49) | 4 weeks ago | Well lets see then, if he has one place that his water is and food maybe you could put a couple of bags of the chips there? If he gets under the porch to cool off, you can use that? I also have a friend that told me about tea tree oil, you can also get this at Wal-Mart ( gosh I love this store ha! ) it is in the vitamins section and a 2fl.oz bottle will run you around $5.oo but you add water to it. It has so many uses, as it is not harmful to animals. adults put it on skin for cuts. You mix with shampoo to keep lice away. Its wild. You just have to mix it with water and spray it on the animal, covering his eyes and mouth. Not a wonderful smell. but it works well as a bug spray inside your house also without worrying about making kids and animals sick.. You could spray around the area where your dog lays and then puts some cedar chips down. Double duty.. shouldn't cost more than $ 20.00. the cedar chips are comfortable too, my dog loves to lay on them, instead of in her dog house. Hope this helps. Dana

zukepr (10090) | 4 weeks ago | there we go!!!! he likes to lay in one particular spot under the deck so if I put the cedar chips under the deck that should be good for when he lays under there and on the deck right? does tea tree oil kill spiders too? thanks
| |
| nutthouse3 (49) | 4 weeks ago | Hey it looks like we're getting somewhere now. Everything I have read on the tea tree oil states that it does kill spiders! You have to play around with the strength some. Maybe stronger for around the area and on the deck and not so strong on the dog.! I would spray it on my hands or even use gloves and rub it on the dogs head and ears and around his eyes. I have never had to use tea tree oil on my dog. The cedar chips seem to do the trick, and we have never had a problem with fleas either and she wears no flea collar! I truly hope this works. Let me know. Also if you leave his food out, that might be the only other thing I can suggest not to do, but we do leave ours out and only occasionally do we get flies in Molly's food, and that too is surrounded by cedar chips. Who knows?! Good Luck! Dana

zukepr (10090) | 4 weeks ago | I have a brown recluse issue INSIDE the house that i need to take care of as well so maybe I can kill 2 bugs with one stone LOL he eats dry food and I havent noticed any flies in his bowl
| |
| nutthouse3 (49) | 4 weeks ago | Ha! I think I would take a shoe to that brown recluse! No seriously, good luck I really hope it works for both your sakes. And your lucky about the flies. Let me know what happens! Have a great Day!

9. jeanena (671) | 4 weeks ago | One thing that my cousin told me helps is wiping them down with WD40 .. I was a little freaked about putting it on one of my dogs, but she raised race dogs and had dogs worth thousands of dollars so I doubt seriously if she would have ever done and thing that would damage them. I use it on my mastiff and it seems to help alot. Hugs Jodi

| 10. dogperson (62) | 4 weeks ago | Nationwide farm stores sell a one quart sized, or similar size, container with a pheromone liquid that is mixed with water in the container and then hung or placed near where the flies are and the flies, well fly to the attractant and then are trapped inside the container. When full of dead flies, dispose of the flies. We dig a small hole and bury the flies, where are stated to be a good fertilizer. Works WELL! For the ears, we use a product called Swat, it is a gel, made for horses and a little bit of it goes a long way.

zukepr (10090) | 4 weeks ago | I dont want to kill the flies I just want to keep them off my dog
| |
| dogperson (62) | 4 weeks ago | The flies will be attracted to the natural scents your dog gives off, from the fur, to the warm blood scent in the tips of the ears, to the scent of his anal glands. They will also be attracted to his urine and feces. There are sprays that are used for horses, but the spray wears off and must be applied, which in the mean time, means that more and more flies will be attracted, they will mate and produce more flies. I guess the best suggestion, is to search the web for fly control and decide which product suites your needs and desires.
