my kitty is so afraid of thunder! |
|
Almost 9 months ago, my daughter brought home a stray kitten. This is our first time to let a cat stay inside the house because we have a cat house outside the garden. My kids even consider her as their youngest sibling! During thunderstorms, she is so fidgety and will run for cover! We usually embrace her tightly so the trembling will stop. Yeah, the poor thing trembles with fear! Since it is rainy season here in the Philippines, thunderstorm in the afternoon is common and we have exhausted all the means to soothe her but to no avail. Just this afternoon, my daughter allowed her inside her study room because it is a sound proofed room but she is still so afraid so I ended up carrying her whereever I go. Are cats really this afraid of thunder? Or she is just the only one?

arkaf61 (4402) | 4 weeks ago | oops:) forgot to say that I do have 2 cats, and neither of them worries much about thunder. So it's not all the cats. I read that we should allow them to find a way to feel comfortable when the storm hits but not to make a big deal out of it because that will be worse. They will feel justified in being scared.

everlasting (8842) | 4 weeks ago | Our dogs too were terrified of thunder but later got used to it. i hope my kitty would get used to this as she grow old.

arkaf61 (4402) | 4 weeks ago | SHe probably will. YOu might notice that as she keeps growing her fear for thunder get more under control and she is able to feel comfort during a storm just by staying close to you.

everlasting (8842) | 4 weeks ago | Just last night, when there was thunder, we placed her in the sofa and we sit near her. she just slept! I hope she will be this way.

arkaf61 (4402) | 4 weeks ago | I"m sure she will. SHe will grow up understanding that it's actually safe and the noise won't bother her so much. We're having a thunder storm right now. Tazz - the dog - just came to lay down by my feet. Fluffy - cat number 1 - just lifted her head and gave me a look like " can't you turn that off? I want to sleep ":) - and bailey - cat number 2 - went to the window, and then decided to lay down on top of my daughter's feet. But no panic from any of them anymore:):):)

5. meggan79 (441) | 4 weeks ago | We have had lots of cats that were afraid of thunder. Mom's dog is like that to, he can't handle thunder or fireworks. I just always figured it was from the loud noise and them having such sensitive hearing.

everlasting (8842) | 4 weeks ago | Yah, that was the explanation of the vet. he told us that thunder seems like a very loud explosion to them so that they are so afraid.

6. Opal26 (1010) | 4 weeks ago | Hey ever, by no means is she the only one. Poor little girl. My cats are afraid of thunder too. A lot of animals are. It is very common. Some are more afraid then others. Mine don't like the sound of the vaccumn. I'm not sure that she will ever get used to it either so be prepared for that to. She might get more used to it and outgrow her fear, you can only hope. Just keep doing what you're doing. Talk to her, try to calm her. There really isn't much else you can do. Remember animals have acute hearing and heightened senses so they are hearing and feeling even louder and deeper than what we are.

7. positiveminded1977 (2114) | 4 weeks ago | LOL... mine are not scared even of the dogs! I think your kitty is just unique. Maybe she will get over it as she grows up. LOL... My cat is so fierce that she chases away the neighbor's dog. In fact, the dogs of the neighborhood know her well because each one has, at one time or the other, got her claws on his nose. So, they steer clear of her. At the same time, she is so gentle and motherly. You know that stray I told you about, the one that comes to my house demanding food? You should see the way she watches over him with a protective air when he eats. Cheers and give my love to your kitty.

8. TessWhite (890) | 4 weeks ago | Every animal reacts differently. I'm lucky that none of my cats are afraid of thunder. But, my 75 lb german shepherd is! Whenver it storms he suddenly thinks he is a lap dog, and he follows me everywhere. Best thing to do for your kitty is let them run and hide til its over. Being someplace quiet and dark may make the cat feel safer than being forced to be held while its storming.

9. jstaubin (336) | 4 weeks ago | some cats are affraid of storms and some are not. It usually depends on the things that have happened throughout their lives. It may be that she was either hurt by something that made a loud noise or even just scared by a loud noise when she was young and now she thinks that the thunder is the thing that scared or hurt her.

everlasting (8842) | 4 weeks ago | If the thinder are so sharp and loud, it is really scary. What you must remember is that thinder is the sound and the lightning is the one that is really scary. If you heard the thunder, you are safe because it takes 8 seconds before the sound of lightning is heard.
