I was so bothered by this.. |

"Kids in Congo were being sent down mines to die so that kids in Europe and America could kill imaginary aliens in their living rooms!" There is a great need for the mineral ore coltran and even kids in democratic republic of congo and rwanda were sent to the mines. Coltran is processed to form tantalum and this in turn is used to manufacture capacitors. Tantalum capacitors are more efficient than the ordinary ceramic types. They are used in computers, cellphones, game consoles, and other electronic devices. Because of the great demand, the price of coltran soared and this drove the african countries who have this ore to force even the prisoners of war and kids to their death. Here is the link of this story... http://videogames.yahoo.c... I know, here in the Philippines, kids were also allowed in the adobe and marble mines to help out their parents. They used simple implements like large nails and rocks to shape the adobe and marble so later it can be used in the homes of the rich. For the mmeantime, the african corrupt officials and the mining companies raked in profits while a very, very small percentage trickle down the young workers. I am a gadgeteer and guilt is creeping in...

1. mjmlagat (520) | 1 month ago | These are just hard-to-swallow realities that truly bite...Kids in rich countries like the U.S and Europe are enjoying the best luxuries in entertainment and modern gaming while their counterparts in poor countries like Africa or here in the Philippines are toiling their lives out of their wit, just ironical, isn't it?

3. aseretdd (3646) | 1 month ago | This is so sad... i don't understand why they would let kids do such a dangerous job... it is like they don't care about the future of their country... just the present... the international world should look into this... i never imagined how an innocent looking gadget have blood of poor children all over it...

4. positiveminded1977 (2338) | 1 month ago | Hmm, the only way to avoid this is to live simple... cut down buying as much as possible, especially things such as video games that you don't really need. When I was a kid, we never had any toys. We used to play in the open--water, soil, sand, mud, plants, and so on and so forth. Why is it that modern kids need costly toys? I don't understand. Cheers and happy mylotting

everlasting (9229) | 1 month ago | Yeah, I also remembered those days when we make our own toys from scraps. I did not buy my kids play station because I know it will divide their attention instead of concentrating in their studies. When my son started earning, he bought all thse things that we forbid them! LOL! Anyway, since my other kids kew better than use it, the gadgets stay in his drawers unused. Now, i emailed them this news item.

5. atacamaval (1474) | 1 month ago | Hi everlasting, We all know things like that are happenning every day in many countries. Still we get shocked (for a little while) when we read these news. The horrible thing is that we will do nothing and we will forget. I have a persian rug at home. I didn´t buy it but didn´t say no when my brother gave it to me. In fact I was elated. I know those rugs are made by little fingers. And so many times we get more involved in fighting against cruelty to animals than cruelty to people. I read a little while ago that ex french actress Brigitte Bardot (who has fought for animals all her life) was much against african people in France (from their own ex colonies). I read the answers of your post and I remembered than when I was a girl we made our balls with rags and made us bead necklaces with corn and melon seeds. And we were happy. Take care.

everlasting (9229) | 1 month ago | Yeah, we are not only happy but we develop socially during those times. Now, the kids do not know how to intract with fellow kids becuse they are so used to doing it alone.

everlasting (9229) | 1 month ago | yeah, although there are laws that protect our kids, it is the implementation that is the problem. Most of those who do this also have political or economic power so nobody will touch them.

everlasting (9229) | 1 month ago | i do agree with you here. Kids today do not simply care what happened to the rest of the world as long as they eat 3 square meals a day and have the latest gadgets.

thelastwolf113 (1484) | 1 month ago | I don't even think they care about eating. As long as they are playing those games, they are highly addictive. I don't let Eric play so much, he's older now so vidoes aresn't so important to him, but they were when he was younger. I'd have to yell at him to come and eat his dinner!

everlasting (9229) | 1 month ago | Same with my son. He was addicted to it that he has less sleep and it shows on his face. Now that he has grown and shed off the vice (it is a vice to me!) he is back to his normal self!
