Now the liberals want to tell us what to eat!

California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, just signed a bill to force restaurants to get trans fat out of the foods they cook. While it's probably a good idea for most restaurants to do so, I don't think it's the business of the California government to tell restaurant owners what they can and cannot cook with or what they can serve as long as it's not an illegal substance. And, the last time I checked, trans fat oils are not an illegal substance.
Where does it end? For some reason, the liberals out there feel like it's their business to tell the rest of us how we are to live, what we're to eat, etc. What happened to freedom of choice?
I think eating healthy is a wise thing to do but if I feel like eating some junk food once in a while, I don't think the government should tell me I can't! If I want to go to a bakery or a fast food restaurant and get something that's not healthy, I don't want to be told that it's now illegal!
It is absolutely ridiculous for the people in state or federal governments to tell us how and what we can eat!
How do you feel about this?

Wrong! Arnold is parading as a Republican but many of the decisions and laws he has been approving are straight from the liberal camp! I live in California and Arnold is not acting like a conservative Republican at all!
And, I don't care how bad something is! The government doesn't have the right to tell us how and what to eat! It's none of their business! Our Constitution was set up to protect us from the government running our lives! This is the exact reason our forefathers came from England and broke away from its hold and why the Revolutionary War was fought to give the citizens the right to control their own lives and not have the government dictate our lives to us.
You must be very young and naive to think this way! And, you obviously didn't read all that I wrote. I agree that eating healthy is a better choice but it should still be our choice as to what we eat not the government's.
This type of law is a socialistic law and we've already seen that socialism doesn't work! That's why the USSR failed because socialism doesn't work!
I like the United States the way it was created to be - government by the people and for the people not for the liberal control freaks!

Hi whimsy...just had to butt in here a bit..LOL
To quote you..The government doesn't have the right to tell us how and what to eat! It's none of their business..
Can't help thinking with that logic, then it would stand to reason that the government doesn't have the right to tell us about food recalls when foods have salmonella, or e. coli contamination. Would you rather people got deathly sick then?
There are also a lot of incidences where the govt and FDA has sat on their tushies and done nothing about other food substances that are known to be dangerous...such as brominated vegetable oil that is found in such drinks as Gatorade and Mountain Dew..over 100 countries have banned this substance...so how come we haven't...I did a whole article about this very thing..

That is a great question, and not so easily answered I would assume. I agree that government probably shouldn't tell us what we can and cannot eat. Although, here in California (I'm thinking that's where you are also) the unhealthy lifestyle is causing quite a problem with our kids. You should see how many fast food restaurants actually surround our high schools here. And lunch time (even after school hours) are packed with these kids. But again, once in a while I like to drive thru McDonalds. I'm hoping before government fully steps in that the restaurants will offer alternative healthy meals. Which I think some are trying to do.

I agree that there is a problem with obesity and unhealthy eating in this country but people need to take responsibility for their own lives and parents need to discipline their children and feed them properly. A lot of the problem is that people have become entirely too dependent on the government to tell them what to do and help them when they have problems.
One of the biggest mistakes our government and leaders made was to allow welfare to become an ongoing thing. It was not created to be that. I know that the people who instilled welfare and those who have continued to come up with various government help plans mean well but these programs have actually hurt the people they were intended to help.
Most of the people who are on welfare and programs like this have been robbed of their will to provide for themselves and become something more than a government project or charity case. I'm not saying everyone who has been on welfare has succumbed to that mindset. I was on welfare for four months 12 years ago but I had to make a decision to risk whatever I had to in order to get off welfare and not get trapped in the system. I had an advantage because I grew up with opportunities and I had dreams I refused to let die.
I've had to work hard not to let circumstances overwhelm me or drive me to quit. Most people on welfare have been in low income situations most of their lives and that type of mindset is very hard to overcome.
Having the government now tell us what we can eat takes away one more thing that empowers people to take responsibility for themselves. It is a scary place to take this country. A dangerous place.

I hate it when Governments try and tell everyone how to live, how to bring up your kids, what you can eat, what you can watch on TV, there job is to run the country not our lives, I am afraid I tend to do the opposite when someone says i must do something.

I'm sorry but I can't help thinking this is actually a good move on his part and I wish more states would outlaw ANY substance used in cooking that could be detrimental to one's health. You might see this as a safety factor....which is better....to allow the continued cooking of foods in high trans fats and allow "freedom" of choice or for people to be sue happy and trigger the blame for known health factors due to trans fats. I did an article about the differences in oils/butter and margarine..since I did an in depth research about it, I was amazed at how dangerous most oils (anything hydrogenated or semi-hydrogenated) and margarines are...Yes one can still eat "junk" food if they want, but at least it should be prepared in safer non trans fats methods.
Read this article about fats in general..makes you think twice

I don't think it is the business of any government to tell us what we can eat much less where we can marry only certain sexes. Atleast they got one right! We all have to be more aware of who we vote for and what we want done while they are in there. It is our right to take a stand and communicate with legistlatures and those in office so they do what we want them to.
