What is that stuff in my gelatin?  email this discussion to a friend?

I enjoyed the jiggly multicolored invisible food stuff just like anyone else does up until I read the ingredients. The package uses the term "cultures" to describe what is in my gelatin. I don't want to ruin gelatin for my fellow MyLotters, but when I think of "cultures" I think of a deadly bacteria reproducing in a petri dish. You mean to tell me that delicious, funny looking, floppy snack I enjoyed eating all those years was still alive? Did you know this about gelatin? Would you still enjoy gelatin knowing it is still alive?

I wouldnt worry about it. The yeast that is in homemade bread is alive also. I 'm sure you will live to eat another day. they routinely serve Jello or gelatin in hospitals which I'm sure they wouldnt do if there were dangerous bacteria abounding in there. I hope you will give that dish of jello another try soon.

Don't be put off by cultures. Lots of food contain some type of cultures. Especially cheeses (and especially the blue ones).

The cultures thing doesn't bother me, but I do have issue with gelatin. Just the sheer fact that it is made from animals' connective tissue freaks me out.

Well, jello is made up of..wait for it..crushed animal bones. I've heard about this back in grade school and I found some information for you.


"The gelatin you eat in Jell-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. After pre-treatment, the resulting mixture is boiled. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down, and the resulting product is called gelatin. The gelatin is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture."

When we were kids we would say and it did happen that all the old stock and horses went to the GLUE factory.

Well in a way we were right, that is where they made GELATIN.

many of us get very confused about,

BACTERIA and CULTURES.

Now yoghurt has a Culture/bacteria but this is a good one.

Cheese needs a culture,to be Cheese.
Yeast is another, in bread, beer.

Some meats (salami) also is a nother one, but care is needed.

We need a bacteria in out Gut to break down the food, again this is a good one,

Actually if you really want to know where it comes from it is from the collagen that is extracted from animals and boiled down. Sounds gross, I know. You can do a google search for gelatin or Jello gelatin and it'll tell you all about it.
