Who hid the H????

It is weird the way 2 english speaking countries spell certain words differently.
I cannot think of anymore at the moment.
But there must be heaps out there.
Same as different items are called different name.
Nappies in the US they are diapers.
I think England and Australia spell words the same way.

Yes it is funny how certain words are like this, in another area I find it funny how some countries spell the word "herbs" but say "erbs" and then the same people will spell the word "oven" but say "hoven" and I have found here in Australia differnt states of this country can differ in the way words are pronounced...

its probably the great vowel shift! the original us settlers from the uk, left before it and modern uk English dates from after it. its all the fault of the french! Well that's the reason behind the colour and color ones anyway. We went all posh and adopted frenchifications of words for a while. Curiously its why a chicken will give you chicken and a turkey turkey but a cow gives beef and a pig pork.

I thought this was about the letter H then I see it's all about the letter u. I was sorely disappointed. I'm very anti h, but u is our friend. When was the last time u did anything wrong to you? I can count numerous times when an h has come between me and happiness.

But in answer to your question; I have no idea. It's probably because most Americans can't spell, so they figured it'd be easier to spell those words if we just dropped a letter out of them.

I know its because Americans droan out their words anyway,like everything is said with an long echo,like neiggggbuurrrrrrr so if this H was added it wid take you all day to say someth8ing cos you would pronounce the H,so that would be

I'm a wordsmith, gal so I was totally confused by this discussion- trying to figure out where the letter H fits into the words you listed. Then I see you meant the letter U.

I don't know why we don't use the poor letter U very much! I think the word color looks much more elegant spelled as colour.
