As rare natural occurances, eclipses always carry some sort of curiousity mixed with a little uncertain fear for watching them. It is strictly prohibited for pregnant women and children to watch eclipses and come outside during eclipse period! Also for some zodiac sign it carries watching restrictions. I remember, there was a total solar eclipse in 16th February, 1980 and I was a college student at that time. I made a reflection type pinhole camera by a mirror and card-board piece as advised by the local radio and reflected the runrays to a white screen in a room to watch the eclipse changes on Sun during that eclipse period. This prevented me and many to watch the Sun directly. Today is 1st August, 2008 and there will be a solar eclipse. To watch this, you can take a small handy size plain mirror and a card board of size just covering the mirror. At the centre of the card board, make a circular hole of about 1/2 inch and attach the card board on the mirror by just covering it so that the mirror is visible only at the circular hole. Bind the card board with the mirror with strings or rubber bands. Then put it in direct sunlight and make the sunrays reflected to your home by the circular opening on the card board and fall on a white wall or white screen indicating a circular pattern. When eclipse will begin, you will find similar changes on the circular pattern as the eclipse. If the Sun will be on total eclipse, then the pattern will reduce and vanish due to no sunray! Again after that, you will find the various stages during reducing of eclipse in your room! Just try it and have the fun, without any risk of burning your eyesight by looking the Sun directly!

Hello.. yes I remember the i16 feb eclipse.. but not the year exactly. As far as I remember.. it was around 4 pm , in subcontinent. And the darkness increased to certain extent , that the birds returned to their respective nests, assuming that it was already evening...and after the eclipse ended, the brightness was back. And , once again , it was in 1999.. I think , not sure... there was one more eclipse , similar to 1980.. And in subcontinent, there are many tradition, and after effects of these solar, and lunar eclipse

Thank you for posting and I hope all who can see the eclipse will appreciate it. Some of us aren't where it is. Another way you can see the eclipse that will not cost any money is to stand under a tree and look at the shadows that are cast under it. The sunlight filtering through the leaves casts a shape of the sun and you can sometimes see lots of little cresent moons under a tree!

Yes, you are very right! I have also seen such patterns during the total solar eclipse that occured in November 1995 morning here in India! The many little cresent moon-like appearances under the trees due to light-shade pinhole camera effect is really amazing! Thanks for your response!
