My son got me to read a SAD short story althroughout having the protagonist dying eventually because of mental illness.

I was thinking what is the value you get from reading sad story with unhappy ending? I gather, the only value I can get out of that is realistically, life is filled with ups & downs, wins & loses, life & death, and cannot all be happy endings. Can you think of anything else?

i don't like unhappy endings at all. there was a movie with kevin kostner message in a bottle it was really good but then it ended with him dying after he finally found a true love. it was a horrible ending and around christmas at that. he went thru a whole lot just to die. i was mad cause they wasted my time. blah. no good. and i heard some girls crying. the only reason i didn't was i couldn't believe it had ended. i thot there had to be more. but the credits kept rolling and i was very disappointed. don't watch message in a bottle.

I've seen Message in the Bottle, I remember crying but I don't actually remember anymore what the plot is with so many movies I've seen.

Everyone likes happy endings, that feel good emotions at the end of the story, like 'and they live happily ever after' or so. But how many of these stories/films you actually remember? Most stories are remembered when they evoke some sort of emotions and stir your mind as to WHY oh Why it has to end that way!

And so we say that was crap! Because it didn't end the way we wanted it!

I only like sad and ambiguous endings. Those are the ones that are more true to life. Some people watch films for an escape and they need to feel comforted by a happy ending. I get upset at picture perfect endings because sometimes they seem so unrealistic. I guess I'm pessimistic, but hey whatever. The reason I like ambiguous endings is because we don't always have a reason for something in life. And these types of films express that.

It all boils down to the plot of the story, the endings somehow calls for some tragedies quite justifying the death of the character or relationship etc., I like endings when you ponder on what could have happened if... or for the readers or viewers to make their own endings. They are the sort of stories that at least make people think and expand their imaginations, not just being spoonfed with visuals or ideas that is quite, as you said, unrealistic!

I dont like unhappy endings. I dont want to be depressed leaving the theatre. Most people go to the movies to kind of escape from real life for awhile. They dont want to e surrounded by depressing images and thoughts. Ambigous endings are slightly better. They are left to the imagination. Happy endings are my favorite.
I'm a big fan of the happy ending.

We all like happy endings and live in a fantasy world that everything is perfect even for a couple of hours escape from reality. Why not? We don't really want to pay to feel unhappy do we?

Life is not fair. Endings in real life are often unhappy, but hopefully, we learn as we go. We also learn how to cope when things go wrong, and how to enjoy life even in the bad times. Finding strength to go through the bad times should make the good times all that more enjoyable!

The challenges in our lives makes it more interesting. It's getting through the hurdles that give us self-fulfillment.

I want happy endings. As you said, life is filled with all those "downs". I don't want to fill my head with yet more by reading or viewing stories that are sad.

I tend to read/watch non-fiction when I want reality, so if I'm reading/watching fiction I pretty much don't want reality anyway.

Some people just like a good story, and they're willing to get that entertainment value out of even the sad stories. For me, though, I've had enough sadness in my life that I won't to "borrow" more.:)
