What is the currency of your money? |
|
When I was a child we had POUNDS, SHILLINGS and PENCE here in New Zealand We had a halfpenny, penny, threepence, sixpence, a florin, a half crown and a crown. The florin was equal to 2 shillings, half crown was equal to 2 shillings and six pence, and the crown was 5 shillings. 12 pennies were equal to one shilling, There were 20 shillings in a pound and 21 shillings in a guinea The half pennies and pennies were bronze, all other coins were silver and a pound was equal to 2 dollars in our current currency. All money over a pound was paper. In 1967 New Zealand changed to Decimal Currency or Dollars and cents. Our coins were (dark bronze)1c, 2c, (silver)5c, 10c, 20c, 50c (light bronze)$1, $2. Our currency today no longer has the 1c, 2c or 5c and our smallest coin is now 10c. The 50c has a ridged edge to assist with sight disabled people. Quite a lot of people had difficulty changing over. I was lucky because I had just started working when Decimal Currency came in here. There was a little ditty that became quite popular at the time of the change. It is sung to the tune of "Click Go The Sheers" a shearing song I think may have originated in Australia who changed to Decimal Currency in 1966. "In come the dollars, in come the cents. Out go the pounds, the shillings and the pence Then comes the day when the money starts to mix On the 14th of February 1966. So what is your local currency and have there been changes to it through the years? HUGZ from KItten1954

1. danishcanadian (15137) | 4 months ago | In Canada we use Canadian dollars. Right now 97 American cents equal 1 Canadian dollar. I like it when the American dollar is just a little bit higher, because I can get more Canadian dollars out of the American dollars that I have. As long as hey stay really close togeher, I'm ine. I do a lot of travelling between Toronto and Phoenix, so the dollar is something I watch very closely,

4. Ruthep (3928) | 4 months ago | In the US we have pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and bills. There have been a couple attempts at coin dollars but it has never worked. We had the Susan B. Anthony dollar which was the exact same size as the quarter. We had buffalo nickels. The head was a buffalo. We had a wheat penny. Sheafs of wheat were on the back. We had half dollars with JFK's head on it. We used to have two dollar bills but as far as I know they are not made anymore, but you can still use them just like any of the currency no longer in circulation. The quarters now are state quarters. Fifty different kinds. There have been lots of changes and I know there is more but I can not think of anymore right now.

5. dragon54u (3975) | 4 months ago | We have the same as you here in the US but unfortunately, we still have that darned penny! I don't mind the nickel but pennies are rather ridiculous. Our paper money has changed over the past few years in an effort to foil counterfeiters and is now a little more colorful than before. And they are saying now that our bills discriminate against sightless people--which is true, I don't know how they manage and they could be cheated by unscrupulous people. They will probably change our paper money in some way so that blind or visually impaired people will be able to distinguish the denominations.

6. Goodie123 (7274) | 4 months ago | Hi Kitten, as we are almost neighbours our currency is the same as yours. I think we still have the 5 cent piece though. Probably will not be long before it is gone though. I think it was much easier for the younger generation to change over when decimal currency came in. We had only been used to the old pounds shillings and pence for a short. Where as our parents and grandparents had been using the old currency for a long time.

msmell (700) | 4 months ago | Aussie here too and yeah we still have the 0.05cent coins, wish they would change the $1 and $2 coins to note though (if memory servers me right weren't they are note in the first place and then they made them coins? cant remember now but that was a mistake if they did! )and then you wouldn't have all this change weighting down your purse or pocket.....
| |
|
|
Goodie123 (7274) | 4 months ago | Yep, the $1 and $2 coins were notes for awhile. I wish they were still notes also. We end up with so many of them, my wallett is falling apart.

|
jwfarrimond (1365) | 4 months ago | Yes, when Australia went decimal, 1 A$= 10 shillings and back then both the 10 shilling and one pound where notes. I think that I still have a 10/- note somewhere...

7. ElicBxn (8805) | 4 months ago | Well, since I live in the states there's been no money change, just changing the looks of the bills in the last few years. I will say that England was still on the old system when I went in the late 60's and on the deciminal system when I went back in 95.

liquorice (1101) | 4 months ago | Yep, we went decimal in 1971, which was two years before I was born, so luckily I didn't have to work with pounds, shillings and pence, it sounds a bit tricky! I do remember being fascinated by the old coins though. My mum and my grandma had kept some, and there were lots of interesting looking ones with lots of sides. They were different colours too (well, I mean different shades of brown maybe!)

8. aseretdd (4854) | 4 months ago | The currency in my country, the Philippines, is called Peso... same name with that of Mexico... the name was given by the Spanish government when both countries were still under Spanish rule... and during the Galleon trade... the Philippines and Mexico were business partners... but i don't think neither of the two benefitted a lot from this...

sparkofinsanity (1920) | 4 months ago | Headache cleared up when I stopped counting my money so I could describe it to you! LOL In Canada we have a one dollar coin that is golden in colour and about the same size as your silver dollar. It has an imprint of a Canadian Loon in a lake on it. So they have been nicknamed Loonies. We also have a silver colored two dollar coin with an insert in the centre that is golden coloured. Sometimes the centres fall out and you have two coins, so we call them toonies! We Canadians are very loony tune people! ROFL
