17 Hours of Pure Hell  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 83/100. rjscott (3069) 4 years ago

I just ended more than 17 of the most horrible hours I’ve spent in many years.

Yesterday afternoon I was outside on the lanai with Lady, tossing balls to her and she catching them and returning them to me or tossing them into the pool. Shortly after 5 p.m. she either slipped into or simply walked into the pool. I laughed at her silliness until I discovered that she was not seeing me. She no longer followed my movements and she could no longer follow the balls that I was tossing.

I put her on my lap and noticed that both of her eyes were opaque, as if a film were covering her corneas. It alarmed me greatly! She became quite lethargic, although a half-hour earlier she’d eaten her entire meal.

I called the vet whose office is located only a five-minute drive from my home. I got their voice mail and left a rather frantic message. I was not aware that they did not have emergency hours. I could only wait for them to return my call.

Bedtime came and in her first attempt to hop on the bed, Lady fell to the floor. I was really alarmed! She made it on the bed on her second attempt and I gave her the little treats she gets each night at bedtime. She fell asleep rather nicely.

It seems dogs (animals in general) take to suffering far better than we humans do. I could not sleep a wink not knowing what was wrong with my dear friend.

At 2 a.m. I went to the bathroom, returning and patted Lady gently on the head. She growled at me … which is something she doesn’t do. I got back into bed, giving her ample room to stretch out.

At 3:30 a.m. I opened my door to the pool and went to sit down at the table to try to come up with a reason for Lady’s predicament. I came up with nothing … except the fact that she’d fallen into or walked into the pool. Then I realized that I had just “shocked” the pool with an extremely heavy dose of chlorine on Thursday about noon.

After returning to bed, and still, unable to sleep, all I could do was blame myself for Lady’s problem. I had visions of a blind, beloved dog following me ever so cautiously with every move I made … and it was my entire fault.

I didn’t sleep. Occasionally I’d turn the light on to take a look at her, sleeping peacefully as a child. I tossed and turned, grabbing a glimpse at the clock as the day unfolded disturbingly slowly.

I took Lady outside to do her thing shortly after 7 a.m. … I was sitting on the lanai just observing her when it occurred to me that she was far more responsive than she had been the evening and night before, and post-midnight. She was catching the balls I tossed to her and dutifully returning them to me, dropping them at my feet.

At 8:05 a.m. the phone rang. It was the vet’s office … after going more into detail,
they made an appointment for me to stop by with Lady at 9:15 a.m.

Long story shortened: The vet gave Lady a thorough going-over and found her to be perfectly normal. He determined that she got a “slight” chlorine burn when she entered the pool. He told me that the eyes have a way of healing quickly though he confessed that an “overnight” cure was unheard of. I was elated!

Lady had just had all her annual tests last May and June, and the doctor said that she was in perfect condition as a result of those tests. He could find no sign of anything wrong with her eyes. I uttered a silent “thank you” prayer as I looked at my best friend who was simply tolerating this “unnecessary” visit to the vet, as she munched the treats the lovely young assistant gave her.

We got home perhaps 15 minutes ago and Lady is her old self, playful as can be, snooping first here, then there. As I type she is lying at my feet, looking up at me with eyes that are incredibly clear!

Have you ever had a scare with your pet? Did it turn out well at the end as Lady’s experience did? Did you hug and kiss your pet when you realized how serious your incident could have been … telling them how much you love them?

I was truly scared. But today’s a new day and there are many things to be done, including reinforcing my love for my Lady which includes taking her for a LONG ride in the car … which she loves immensely! That means that today will be largely a day away from myLot being spent with myLove.

Memo to self: The sun comes up every day … but it sure is dark between bedtime and dawn when you face a situation that you cannot comprehend. © 2008 RJScott

After spending a full weekend exclusively with Lady, I can honestly say that she's back to her former, normal self.

Thanks for your kind thoughts!

First of all, RJ, I am so happy that Lady is recovered. How wonderful! I am so happy for the both of you. I hope you and Lady enjoy your long drive today; but rest assured that Lady does not blame you at all.

I did have a horrible incident with my Daphne. I had only had my litte rescues for two weeks when it happened. One night when I was taking Daphne and Gunther out for their potty break, Daphne caught sight of a rabbit. She took off so fast I didn't have time to catch her. She ran the rabbit from the back yard to the front and out into the road. The speed limit is 55 mph on this road. There are no street lights so it's very dark. I heard a big thump and my heart just fell. I got to the front yard just in time to see a pick-up go by. I ran as fast as I could, yelling her name, but I couldn't see her. I finally saw her little head sticking up, weaving back and forth. I picked her up and ran to the house.

She didn't respond to me at all. Her eyes looked glazed over and she appeared not to hear me. Her nose was scraped and bleeding. She was bleeding from a cut above her eyebrow, too. I called the vet and got the after-hours service. The gave me a number for an emergency clinic in the next town that is open nights. I wrapped her up and my daughter held her while we drove the 15 miles to the clinic. I made my daughter keep Daphne awake during the drive. I was afraid for her to go to sleep. We both sang to her and talked to her to keep her awake.

The clinic said she was in shock. They immediately gave her IV fluids and drugs. They did x-rays, but didn't find anything broken. They told me to go home and promised to call me if they needed me. Needless to say, I did not sleep all night. I just felt so guilty! I couldn't believe that my little 10-pound Daphne was hit by a pickup truck! OMG.

I picked her up the next morning and took her to our regular vet. He stitched up the cut above her eye, shaving off half her Schnauzer eyebrow in the process. He kept her for another day and night, keeping her on fluids. My vet had Mini-Schnauzers, too, so he was particularly good to her. He swore to me that she was fine, just knocked silly. I picked her up the next morning and brought her home. You better believe that she didn't leave my lap for a week unless it was her idea!

The driver who hit her never stopped. I kept the tag from the front of his truck for a while; the tag is what evidently hit Daphne and not the actual truck. Thank goodness she was short! lol

The guilt was the worst part and the most useless. Dogs don't think that way. They know you love them and forgive you everything. All of us who have companions like that are truly blessed.

Wow, Cheryl! You sure had a scare there, didn't you?

I would have used that tag to track down the driver and prosecute as far as the law would permit.

Yep, we are really blessed with our pets, aren't we?

First off find out who your vet uses for emergency services. They should have gotten back to you ASAP. If they don't have a vet on call, at all times, they should have a referral ER clinic on their answering service. That suprises me they should have a better ER response time, or referral number for you. Not good practice!

Second: Did this all appear to be visual impairment? I ask because some of this sounds suspicously like seizure activity also.
http://www.canine-epileps...
If she had bloodwork done in May or June have them run another series, for referrance, now. I suggest this because there are many other factors that can result in seizure or seizure like behaviour:
http://www.peteducation.c...
Have them run a complete panel on her and if she is over 7 have them run 'senior canine' panel. It will include more, if you can afford it.

Even if this was not seizure activity, it wouldn't hurt to have that blood panel right after all this, for future referance. In vet medicine this is all we have as the pet cannot tell us how they are feeling or what was wrong with them.

Not trying to give you a fright, but preventive vet medicine is much cheaper than letting something go until it costs an 'arm and a leg'.

Hope all is well with your Lady-bug!

Hiya Irish,

I learned on Saturday that my vet's office uses an emergency service that is about 11 miles from my home. Had I known that Friday I could have taken Lady there immediately. They operate from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. the following day.

Lady is absolutely fantastic. The vet was able to assure me that it was a temporary burn (like you get when you get chlorined water in your eyes) to the corneas.

Her lethargy was a result of confusion. She was able to see, but not at all clearly, so she measured every step she took on Friday, cautiously moving around objects that she normally whizzes right by. Since Saturday she's resume her whizzing movements, sliding the length of the marbled areas often sliding on her butt as she attempts to stop a ball in mid roll.

She couldn't be happier ... I couldn't be happier!

BTW -- the vet told me that if it had been a seizure there would have been no chance of a reversal of the "coated" look in her eyes. They're as clear as can be.

Yes, I had an awful scare just this past Saturday.

Every night Bella, my Boston Terrier and Lucy her B.T. sidekick go to bed around nine pm. I lay down around 10 pm. I always take out my 10 MG Ambien and set it on my nightstand. The dogs are always in bed way before this.

On this night everything was normal except the dogs were on the bed with me wrestling and playing together instead of in their cages at the other end of the house.

Next thing I know Bella is behind me, when I look to my right she has her front legs on my nightstand woofing everything down that is edible, my pill was gone!

She takes off like a shot licking her chops. I went into hysterics and yelled for my husband.

He wanted to know if I really thought it would hurt her, I told him I weigh over 200 hundred pounds (don't tell anyone how heavy I am) and the thing knocks me unconscience, what did he think it would do to a 24 pound dog?

I called my vet's house, he wasn't home but his wife told me to give her two tablespoons of hydrogin peroxide, she should throw in up in about five minutes, if it didn't come up to repeat it.

We gave her the first dose, she went in the back and threw up three piles, no pill, I came through the house and was going to tell my husband we were going to have to do it again when a little white spot caught my eye by the sofa, there was the pill.

She had apparently spit it out as soon as she ran through the house. So we had traumatized her for nothing. She went over and laid on her pillow watching us and sulking.

But I was so relieved. I will never leave a pill out again.

I am so glad your girl was okay. The guilt is awful when something happens by our own hand, even if it is unintentional.

Boy, Susan, that must have been frightening for you!

I'm so glad that you actually found the pill, removing any doubt from your mind and that Bella is OK!

And don't worry. I won't tell a soul about your weight! rasp

Man, you have been through hell, RJ. I'm sorry to hear about Lady's ordeal, but happy to hear that she is well now.

About a year ago, I came into the house and saw that my little Scotty, Batman, was acting strange. He was making a strange noise and seemed to have difficulty breathing. I observed this for a couple of hours, then we called the veterinarian as he seemed to get worse. Of course, it was late at night.

The veterinarian agreed to meet us at his office. It was around 10 PM. We got there and learned that it appeared he had a blockage in his bladder and it could rupture. I asked him if he could do surgery, and he said that he had no one to assist him and that Batman may not make it. He suggested that we might consider driving him to the big city, where there would be a proper surgery available. He also said it was very possible that Batman would die enroute.

I asked him if he would do the surgery, and I understood the risks. I said that I would be glad to assist. I truly thought that Batman was going to die, but I at least wanted to try everything that we could.

The veterinarian agreed and we went into the little Operating Room. He cut Batman open and pulled out his intestines, bladder, etc., and managed to repair the damage, then sewed up Batman.

Quite frankly, I thought that Batman wouldn't make a full recovery, but he did and is still going strong.

myLot reputation of 83/100. rjscott (3069)  4 years ago

That is frightening, Trans. It's a good thing that you have a constitution that permitted you to assist. I don't know how good I'd be at something like that, but I think I'd be willing to try.

I'm really glad that all turned out well for Batman, and of course, for you.

I always say that our furry friends make better patients than humans do. When animals are in pain they withdraw, for the most part ... they don't carry on like humans do, looking for pity.

Thanks for sharing your story!
